This paper reports on research being conducted under a FRST -funded research programme. The programme has two linked research objectives - (i) creating a quantitative profile of the incidence of multiple job holding in New Zealand; and (ii) investigating the dynamics of becoming a multiple job holder in New Zealand and the social consequences of multiple job holding. Organised around these two objectives, this programme of social research is investigating the role of multiple job holding as a positive change strategy for individuals, families and communities. It focuses particularly on factors that influence the adoption of multiple job holding by individuals, and the effects that a multiple job holding work style has on individuals, families and communities. The paper reports the findings of an initial statistical profile of the incidence of multiple job holding in New Zealand based on the 2001 census.

<p>This thesis presents the voices of 17 pioneers of the organisation parents' Centre, founded in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1952. They reflect on Parents' Centre's contribution to the welfare and happiness of young children and their parents, and the challenges and satisfactions for them as 'movers and shakers' of an entrenched system. The pioneers, 13 women and 3 men, were a group of professionals and parents educated in the progressive tradition who worked as volunteers to found and develop the organisation. They challenged the well-established and generally respected views of the policymakers of the 1950s about the management of childbirth and parent education for young children. They believed that the education and care of the child from birth to three needed to be brought into line with the progressive principles and practices which had been gaining ground in the schools and pre-schools of New Zealand since the 1920s and which emphasised holistic development, especially the psychological aspects. Using Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory I set the study within the social climate of the 1950s to assess the contribution the changing times made to the success of the organisation. I identified the social and economic forces which brought change both in the institutions of society and within every day family life, particularly for young children and their parents. As researcher, I added my voice to their reflections while also playing the role of analyst. The study used an oral history method to record the stories of the participants from a contemporary perspective. My involvement in the organisation over 50 years gave me insider knowledge and a rapport with the people interviewed. Using a loosely structured interview I adopted a collegial method of data gathering. A second interview, two years after the first, informed the pioneers about my use of the interview material and gave opportunities for critical comments on my analysis. It became apparent that under the leadership of Helen Brew, parents' Centre was able to influence change. Analyses of the background of the pioneers and of the educationalists who influenced them in training, career and parenthood show that key influences on the pioneers were lecturers at Wellington and Christchurch Training Colleges and Victoria University of Wellington. The liberal thrust of these educational institutions reinforced similar philosophical elements in the child rearing practices experienced by the pioneers. Overall, the pioneers expressed satisfaction with the philosophies and practice they advocated at that time, their achievements within Parent's Centre, and pride in founding a consumer organisation effective for New Zealand conditions. They saw Parents' Centre as having helped to shape change. This study documents the strategies used by Parents' Centre to spread its message to parents, policy makers and the general public. At the end of the study the pioneers were in agreement that the change in the role of women, particularly as equal breadwinners with men, presented a challenge to the consumer and voluntary aspects of the organisation of Parents' Centre today. Some felt the organisation had lost its radical nature and was at risk of losing the consumer voice. Nonetheless, all the pioneers felt that Parents' Centre still had a part to play in providing effective ante-natal education 'by parents for parents' and a continuing role in working for change in the services in accordance with the needs of parents and children under three.</p>

Sexual victimization (SV) risk can begin in social contexts, ones where friends are present, though it is unclear how friends might be integrated into SV prevention. Using focus groups, female college drinkers described (a) the role of friends in preventing SV, (b) the strategies friends use to reduce vulnerability, and (c) the barriers to implementation. Friends-based strategies (keeping tabs on one another, using signals to convey potential danger, interrupting escalating situations, taking responsibility for friends, relying on male friends) and barriers (intoxication, preoccupation, situation ambiguity, social consequences) were discussed. Interventions can draw on these strategies, but must address the critical barriers.

Crowdsourcing has a role to play in solving healthcare-based problems as it can tap into a vast pool of global medical knowledge. This chapter first categorizes the various problems in the healthcare industry. It then describes the differences in various medical traditions in solving medical problems. The chapter also discusses the challenges in identifying the ideal medical solution. It notes the various types of obstacles to adopting effective healthcare solutions and suggests crowdsourcing solutions that could build up an impetus for bringing about positive change. Finally, the chapter emphasizes the potential of crowdsourcing to disrupt old ideas and introduce new ones as well as make a significant improvement in the social quality for different population groups.

Much of the dominant literature on adult learning assumes that participation is generally positive and voluntary, and presents these features as unproblematic. This paper questions both assumptions. It starts by identifying a deep-rooted and influential dominant paradigm of research, and asks whether the discourse of continual lifelong learning for all conceals a degree of authoritarianism, as suggested by critics. It then considers evidence from recent field based research suggesting that learners may: • switch between discourses of compulsion and those of self-realisation; • combine participation in learning with an active embrace of non-participant identities. The paper illustrates these issues through a detailed analysis of the experience of two learners who were amongst 70 people interviewed during 1998/99 as part of a research project funded by the Scottish Executive's Department of Enterprise and Lifelong Learning, entitled Education for All?, and from data drawn from focus groups and interviews undertaken in Northern Ireland in 1997/98 as part of a study of relationships between initial and continuing education, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council as part of its Learning Society Programme. Here are two stories, from adult travellers through the world of lifelong learning1. Jane is a self-confessed adult education addict, Davie thinks he is too old for that sort of thing. Jane, a white woman in her late 20s, has two children and is married. Davie is white, in his early 50s and married with two daughters, and is physically unable to work. Both are working class urban Scots. At time of interview Jane had been studying part time for six years in the same community learning centre and had just gained an HNC qualification in computing. Davie wasn't studying anything, nor did he want to. Here are two contrasting stories, or so it might appear. Yet enthusiastic Jane keeps using words that suggest she was not really a free agent. You have to keep your brain active, she says, adding: I really forced myself to do the arithmetic and English, and later on, You just have to these days don't you. Hard-nosed Davie got half way through the interview before mentioning a SCOTVEC he achieved through his local credit union. I was conned into it, he told us, then confessed to another course, on food hygiene: It was just getting a bit of paper with your name on it. What is going on here? What can this mean? Lifelong learning is supposed to foster autonomy, self-realisation, empowerment. Here, though, are two learners who are busily denying their own agency and decision making. One presents himself as non-participant, is self-deprecatory about the choices he has made, and disparages his qualifications. One describes herself as making choices under constraint, becoming a learner by submitting to forces more powerful than her own will. Both are participants by standard external definitions, but one almost seems apologetic for having so much fun, and one almost seems ashamed of doing it at all. AbstractThis paper examines the case of a Shiite practitioner of Tibetan medicine in Ladakh, North-western India. It recounts the story of a Buddhist family converted to Islam, for which the abandonment of religion has not led to the discontinuation of a lineal medical practice known to have Buddhist overtones. This situation provides an invitation to explore the social consequences of maintaining the practice in a region characterized by religious conflict, as well as the criteria of sameness and difference, technique and genealogy that make a marked ‘other’ a practitioner of Tibetan medicine. These religious overlaps are, however, not only apparent at the social level; they are also present in the preparation of medicines, in etiological narratives or in the physical regimes of bodily care. The composite nature of medical practice helps us to observe from a new angle the role of religion in the practice of Tibetan medicine. The way medicine is enacted and performed in this context provides empirical materials to study the paradigms that both structure and confer motion to Tibetan learned medicine. The ethnography of a remote region in the Himalayas opens up research paths for the anthropology of Asian medicine amongst new categories of healers and renewed contexts of practice.

This research examines the effects of warning messages that emphasize the social consequences of negative health outcomes. The authors demonstrate that highlighting social (vs. health) consequences leads to greater perceived temporal proximity of and increased perceived vulnerability to the outcome, thereby affecting risk perceptions, behavioral intentions, and customer perceptions of actual experience. They document this effect across five studies in different health domains including flossing (Study 1), soda consumption (Study 2), smoking (Study 3), and unprotected ultraviolet light exposure (Studies 4 and 5). These findings point to the important role of the consequence type highlighted in warning messages, which can have a significant impact on risk perceptions and consumer experiences.

AbstractInvestigations of inequality within the courtroom have mostly examined ways in which discourse structure and rules of use constrain witnesses. This article goes beyond interactional practices to deal with four central language ideologies, which both facilitate these practices and impact on the interpretation and understanding of what people say in evidence. The article further shows that language ideologies can have much wider consequences beyond the courtroom. Focusing on language ideologies involved in storytelling and retelling in cross-examination, and using an Australian example, the article traces the recontextualization of part of a witness's story from an initial investigative interview to cross-examination, then to its evaluation in closing arguments and the judicial decision, as well as its (mis)representation in the print media. The analysis reveals the role of these language ideologies in the perpetuation of neocolonial control over Australian Aboriginal people. This study aims to determine the role of social advisers as a judge's consideration in making decisions on those who are dealing with the law. This research is a normative legal research. Literature study methods such as law. This data analysis technique uses a qualitative descriptive technique. The results showed that the social adviser from the Correctional Center (BAPAS) has an important role for the suspect or defendant, namely children in the trial process, namely accompanying children and then conveying the results of social research to the judge. Community research reports are used for the purposes of investigation, prosecution and trial in cases involving children for judges in making their decisions.

Em pesquisa sobre o comportamento do consumidor, estudos sobre vulnerabilidade do consumidor apresentam uma proposta de unificação para diversos estudos que focam as consequências sociais do consumo. Ao se analisar a maternidade contemporânea, percebe-se aumento na oferta de produtos e serviços. No Brasil, um dos serviços que chama a atenção é a assistência médica privada para gestantes, pelo elevado número de cesarianas realizadas. O objetivo do artigo consiste em explorar potenciais situações de vulnerabilidade que gestantes possam encontrar, especialmente vindas do serviço de assistência médica, com foco no parto. Foram analisados blogs de gestantes e mães em busca de depoimentos. In consumer behavior research, studies about consumer vulnerability present a framework that aims to unify various studies that focus on the social consequences of consumption. Analysis of contemporary motherhood shows an increase in the offer of products and services. In Brazil, one of the services that stands out is private medical service for pregnant, due to its high occurrence of cesarean delivery. The objective of this paper is to explore potential situations of vulnerability that pregnant women may find, especially coming from the medical service, with a focus on delivery. The methodology focused on the analysis of content in blogs directed to pregnant women and mothers in search of evidence. The main results show that Brazilian pregnant women, in the role of medical services consumers for delivery, are in a vulnerable role due to a number of factors.
