In order to facilitate people’s understanding of COVID-19, the present study adopts the theory of semantic field to analyze the COVID-19 lexicon that appeared in China Daily, an authoritative international daily newspaper issued by China. A total of 100 pieces of English news issued by China Daily have been randomly selected for this research. According to the theory of semantic field in structural linguistics, the meaning of a word cannot stand alone, but come into being with the meanings of its related words. Therefore, it is reasonable to try to understand COVID-19 as thoroughly as possible with relevant words, which form its semantic field.

Accuracy is one of the biggest features of news reports, but in fact, we often note that news reports will use a lot of fuzziness, which plays an important role in these news reports. Grounded on Verschueren’s adaptation theory, mainly choosing the representative news reports of China Daily and USATODAY as an example, this paper analyzes the pragmatic functions of fuzziness in news reports and illustrates the rationality of fuzziness in theses news reports and reveals that appropriate use of fuzziness in news reports is conductive to the rigor and accuracy of news reports.

Abstract The paper compares the representation of the November 2017 missile test in news reports by The New York Times and China Daily. The U.S. reports embody to some extent a Cold War mindset by tending to internationalize the issue and make itself appear as a victim of the crisis. Through the attribution of blame, the U.S. seeks to evade its responsibilities and maintain its hegemonic status. The Chinese reports intimate that the crisis is mainly a problem between the U.S. and the Korean Peninsula. These reports tend to present China as a responsible stakeholder seeking to help solve the issue through communication and dialogue. The analysis of these differences is informed theoretically by perceived differences in culture. The paper concludes that the discourse patterns of these reports index a rising China and a shift in the balance of power in international politics.

Media, as important windows for the public to get to know timely information, play a vital role in influencing citizens’ attitudes as well as behaviors. From 2019, the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a global health emergency, has aroused great concern of the international community, including media. Varied in cultural context, political stand, and people’s ideology, however, media in different countries reported the COVID-19 dissimilarly. According to Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis (CDA) model, it is posited that the discrepancies in the reports of the COVID-19 can reflect ideological differences and have explanatory power in the development of the COVID-19 in distinct countries. Based on this premise, by utilizing the database analysis software AntConc 3.2.4w on self-built corpora, this study analyzed the news reports of different stages on the COVID-19 in China and the UK, i.e., in China Daily and The Guardian, respectively, and attempted to reveal the discourse characteristics in the two media, together with the discussion on their possible relations to the pandemic-controlling practices. The corpus-based analysis showed that China Daily used more objective and neutral words in the descriptions of the COVID-19 and expressed more active attitudes in fighting against the epidemic, whereas The Guardian used more negative words in describing the pandemic and words with weak restricting force when reporting policies concerning the control and prevention of the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the comparison between the discourse before and after the lockdown demonstrated that the descriptions of the COVID-19 in the UK media transformed into a more objective and neutral one than before with an increased use of expressions of restriction and social conflicts. The same comparison in the discourse of China Daily found that words about sharing experience and promoting cooperation augmented noticeably. The above-mentioned findings were also discussed together with these two countries’ domestic epidemic situations and ideological differences, respectively.

By combining the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach with the corpus linguistic method, this study compares the lexical choices employed by two English newspapers, i.e. the China Daily (CD) and the China Post (CP), in their coverage of Taiwan’s KMT (Kuomintang) Chairman Lien Chan’s visit to China in April 2005. The comparative analysis of the two corpora of news reports is conducted at three levels: word frequencies, part-of-speech (POS) frequencies and semantic category frequencies. The paper argues that the differences in the news representation of Lien’s visit are attributed to the different socio-political functions performed by these two newspapers: while the CD depicts the event as a momentous one that has received nation-wide plaudits in order to echo faithfully China’s policy of peaceful reunification, the CP presents a more comprehensive picture of the event in that it also reports in detail some incidents, including violent protests, triggered by Lien’s visit that has great impact on the domestic social life of Taiwan.
