Understanding the concept is one important factor in the purpose of learning mathematics. Understanding concepts is the ability of students in mastering a concept both in explaining and applying a concept in problem solving or problem solving. Personality plays a role in the learning process of students this is because the attitude of each individual in making decisions is influenced by habits. Personality and gender differences can allow differences in understanding of concepts. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with the aim to describe the understanding of the quadrilateral concept of students in terms of extrovert-introvert personality types and gender. In this study four junior high school students were chosen as subjects determined by extrovert-introvert personality types and gender. Data collection instruments used consisted of mathematics ability tests, MBTI personality questionnaires, quadrilateral understanding of concept material tests and interview guidelines. The results of this study indicate (a) Extroverted male students are less able to restate the quadrilateral concept, and less able to use and utilize and choose procedures or operations to solve quadrilateral problems (b) Extroverted female students are less able to restate the quadrilateral concept, less able to calcify quadrilateral based on appropriate traits, and less able to use and utilize and choose procedures or operations to solve quadrilateral problems (c) Introverted male students are less able to restate the quadrilateral concept, less able to calcify rectangles based on appropriate traits, ( d) Introverted female students are less able to calcify quadrilateral based on appropriate traits. The implication of the results of this study is the understanding of the concepts in each personality of both men and women need to be considered.   Keywords: Understanding of concepts, quadrilateral, ekstrovert-introvert and gender.

The emphasis of mathematics learning, especially students' communication skills, needs to be considered from gender equality in solving mathematical problems. This study aims to describe: 1) the potential mathematical communication skills of students based on gender; 2) gender equality in communicating mathematical problem solving; and 3) the suitability of the form of the model or the applied form to develop students' mathematical communication skills based on gender at school. This research is a descriptive qualitative research conducted on all junior high school students in Langsa with a purposive sampling technique of 283 students. The data were collected through mathematical communication skills and questionnaire tests which were analyzed descriptively using the concept of Miles and Huberman. The results showed that: 1) mathematical communication skills of female students were better than male students in solving mathematical problems; 2) mathematical communication skills of male students are better in suburban schools and female students are better in downtown schools; and 3) learning implementation plans are still limited in emphasizing mathematical communication skills and learning tends to be cooperative and individual. It is recommended that learning plans refer to developing mathematical communication skills that pay attention to students' gender equality in order to optimize mathematical problem solving.

Few previous studies have compared students' epistemological beliefs in mathematics with those in science. To ascertain the discipline and gender differences on students’ epistemological beliefs, this study conducted a survey with 495 Taiwanese ninth graders in junior high school. Findings show that female students express the stronger belief that science learning occurs in a quick fashion as compared with the view that mathematics learning occurs in a quick fashion , both male and female students express the stronger belief that mathematics knowledge is certain as compared with the view that science knowledge is certain, and male students express the stronger belief that science knowledge is simple and the ability to learn science is fixed as compared with the view that mathematics knowledge is simple and the ability to learn mathematics is fixed. Male students were also in more agreement in their belief about quick learning, certain knowledge, simple knowledge, and the innate ability of mathematics, as well as certain knowledge, simple knowledge, and the innate ability of science, than were female students. This study also revealed that students’ beliefs about knowledge are domain-specific, but some evidence of domain-general beliefs also exists.
