This article aims to peel the structure of the main character psychological condition and the defense mechanisms of his ego by using Freud's psychoanalysis theory. This is because the drama script has a very complicated problem which is experienced by the main character, Salim, in his life. He had despaired and felt that his life was empty because he got several influences from western culture. The personality structure, according to Sigmund Freud, is divided into three: id, ego and superego. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The result of this research is that personality structure which consists of id, ego and superego was found in Salim's figure. However, the dominating one is the id, then the ego, and the last superego. The researcher can make a hierarchy of personality structure of the main character, Salim, based on his research as (1) the personality structure in the form of id occupies the first level because its appearance is very intense; (2) the personality structure in the form of ego occupies the second level because its appearance is not as much as the id, (3) The personality structure in the form of superego occupies the third level because Salim rarely uses in conscience based on good or bad morality. Meanwhile, the ego defense mechanism found by the researcher in this drama script is (1) repression, (2) displacement or diversion, (3) rationalization, and (4) direct aggression. The others were not found in the drama script. The defense mechanism of the ego displacement becomes one often done by Salim figure to avoid the problem and the psychological conflict that he experienced. The reason is that he diverts feelings of displeasure towards an object to other objects that are more likely to be used as a backrest in the complicated conflict in himself. He considers that the defense mechanism of the ego's displacement felt more secure so as not to add to the complicated problem that he faces.

A story becomes interesting because of the existence of the characters’ conflicts. This research objectives were to investigate the conflicts and defense mechanisms in Audrey Turner, the main character of Finding Audrey novel written by Sophie Kinsella. This research was conducted in qualitative method by using narrative research design. The collected data were identified, categorized, and analyzed based on literature and psychology perspectives of Islam’s (2016) theory and defense mechanisms by Cramer (2006). The findings show that person vs him/herself as the internal conflict is found 52 times (67.5%). The first external conflict found is person vs person which appears 23 times (29.9%) It is followed by person vs society and person vs nature conflicts, each of which appears once only (1.3%). Three kinds of defense mechanisms are found as well. The denial defense mechanisms are found 72 times (54.1%) whereas projection and identification are each found as many as 48 times (36.1%) and 13 times (9.8%). It means that  Audrey, as the main character, mostly faces conflicts against her own self and feels of fears affected from her anxiety disorder and people around her. To deal with her conflicts, Audrey mostly uses denial as a defense mechanism to protect herself.

With the advancement of technology, a newly adopted form of literary work was found, known as a movie game. It is one of the game genres that resembles real movies that provide choices to the players who can actively determine the story, ending, and characters' action. In literary work, a character is one of the intrinsic elements that can be interestingly analyzed from the psychological perspective, including Ego Defense Mechanisms. This study focuses on how the protagonist in a movie game entitled The Walking Dead: Michonne faced her anxiety through her ego defense mechanisms. It aims to identify the types of ego defense mechanisms and how they can help the protagonist cope with her anxiety. The discussion was based on psychoanalysis theory, namely Ego Defense Mechanisms proposed by Sigmund Freud. This study elaborated the description of the protagonist's actions when she faced anxiety through a qualitative method. The analysis revealed that the protagonist adopted the four types of Ego Defense Mechanisms: repression, sublimation, rationalization, and aggression. It was found that aggression was the most frequently adopted mechanism, followed by sublimation, rationalization, and the least was repression. This finding indicated that the protagonist chose aggression to release resentment or dissatisfaction, especially when facing objects or other characters that create anxiety or frustration. It implies that the persistence of aggression, sublimation, rationalization, and repression could reflect the presence of continual threats in the environment from which people should survive.

Defense mechanisms are mental operations that function outside of awareness. In this sense, they operate in the unconscious mind. Such mechanisms were first identified by Sigmund Freud in connection with psychopathology but later were understood to be part of normal everyday functioning. Defenses serve the purpose of protecting the individual from excessive anxiety and loss of self-esteem. Defense mechanisms have been found to change with age, based on the complexity of the mental operations involved. Once a child understands how a defense mechanism functions, the mechanism tends to be used less frequently and a cognitively more complex mechanism is adopted.

<div class="WordSection1"><p>This paper attempts to analyze Blanche's psychology at A Streetcar Named Desire by American playwright Tennessee Williams and Mariam and Laila in A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini in relation to Freud's use of defense mechanisms, in order to restore their mental and physical health. The main character of women has gotten an unacceptable impulse into an acceptable impulse by blocking impulses such as superego, thereby reducing suffering from previous traumatic experiences that cannot be erased from their minds, and anxiety to survive. Their anxiety becomes so excessive that the ego forms a defense mechanism to protect them with new hopes, dreams and desires to reduce excessive stress. Blanche, under his mental and social pressure, his illusions and falsification of reality, were unable to overcome the trauma-causing situation in reality, leaving him on the verge of collapse. Mariam and Laila, who most often experience physical and mental stress, internal and external conflicts that come from people in their lives, war, religion and culture. Which ultimately forms the character of women who turn against rebels with strength and defense. The research method used to describe and analyze the main female characters in A Thousand Splendid Suns and A Streetcar Named Desire is with some evidence obtained from the statements of the main female figures containing defense mechanisms including repression, regression, rationalization, and rejection. The author finally discovered many things about the main female character from both literary works. In A Thousand Splendid Suns only three defense mechanisms were found. Mariam and Laila do not use regression as one of their defense mechanisms. Both characters never behave like a child. No evidence was found to support the use of this defense mechanism. In A Streetcar Named Desire, four defense mechanisms are found. Blanche uses all defense mechanisms as his defense.</p><p><em>Keywords: Women, Anxiety, Freud's defense mechanisms</em><em></em></p></div>
