The relevance of the chosen topic is connected to the fact that in the conditions of value-based management, market capitalization acts as a key indicator of the company efficiency. At the present time, when the Russian oil and gas industry has become the object of international sectoral sanctions, the identification of the impact of these sanctions on the domestic oil and gas companies’ value is of great practical importance. The article considers the cost of oil and gas companies and the impact of sectoral sanctions and negative dynamics of oil prices. The study was conducted using econometric modeling tools. For analysis 4 of the oil company with the largest market share, namely PJSC “Rosneft Oil Company”, PJSC “LUKOIL”, JSC “Gazprom Neft” and PJSC “Tatneft”, which in the aggregate represent 62% of the entire Russian oil industry, were selected. The features of valuation of Russian oil and gas companies are covered. The sanctions in the oil and gas industry of the Russian Federation are considered, the consequences of their introduction and the fall of the world oil price are analysed. The analysis to determine the impact of the cost of oil and gas companies from international sanctions and oil prices. It was found that in the oil industry market capitalization depends directly on the price of oil, and in the gas industry this impact is absent. It was discovered that due to the low level of oil prices, the sanctions did not have a significant influence on the cost of oil and gas companies.

Subject. This article explores the ratios of the company's market capitalization and value to the balance sheet value of assets and equity of the twenty five leading public oil and gas companies between 2008 and 2018. Objectives. The article aims to identify key trends in the changes in market capitalization and value ratios of the company to the balance sheet value of assets and equity of the largest public oil and gas companies, identify the factors that have caused these changes, and establish the applicability of these multipliers to estimate the value of the business within the oil and gas industry. Methods. For the study, I used comparative, and financial and economic analyses, and generalization of materials of the companies' consolidated financial statements. Results. The article establishes that the multipliers studied are acceptable for assessing the value of oil and gas companies, but it is preferable to use asset-based ratios. Conclusions and Relevance. The overall decline in profitability and the increase in debt load in the stock exchange sector of the global oil and gas industry should be taken into account when using multipliers based on assets and shareholder capital in the assessment of the value of oil and gas corporations through a comparative approach. The results of the study can be used to assess the possible value of oil and gas assets as part of a comparative approach and develop measures to increase the market capitalization of public oil and gas companies.

In this study, a relationship between the mood of news and the response of the oil and gas industry index of the Russian Federation was revealed. The empirical base of the study included 8.5 million news from foreign sources. Research methodology: fuzzy sets, naive Bayesian classifier, Pearson correlation coefficient. As a result of the research, it was discovered that: 1) negative news affects the stronger than the positive on the stock index; 2) news on companies affect the value of the index, and news on the industry affect the volume of trading; 3) the sanctions did not significantly affect the coverage of Russian oil and gas companies.

Maintenance, repair and operating (MRO) materials typically represent 15–20% of the operating costs for a mature oil and gas asset. Of this, a substantial proportion is comprised of high-value repairable equipment such as motors, compressors and pumps. This equipment is often at bottlenecks in the production process and so the impact of materials cost on profitability is magnified by the production ramifications of an outage. Effective management of this equipment is key to the sustainable, profitable operation of any oil and gas asset, and is key to improving the competitiveness of the Australian industry. Oil and gas companies are adopting a variety of models to handle the repair process, with varying degrees of success. Challenges include: poor materials availability and lack of traceability; complex infield materials management processes resulting in costly wastages; difficulty in managing consistency, suitability and specifications of repairs; high cost for those undertaking the repairs; and, correct allocation of responsibility and risk in the materials management process. Developed in collaboration with Australian oil and gas operators, with input from case studies outside the oil and gas industry, this extended abstract discusses the roles and opportunities for the circular economy in helping companies to meet their sustainability and profitability targets. Using several real-life examples, it makes recommendations for vendors, service providers and operators that can have material impact on the profitability of the industry.

Subject. This article explores the market valuation ratios of the twenty five leading listed oil and gas companies between 2006 and 2018. Objectives. The article aims to identify key trends in the changes in market valuations of the largest listed oil and gas companies, and identify the factors that have caused these changes. Methods. For the study, I used comparative, and financial and economic analyses, and generalization of materials of the companies' consolidated financial statements. Results. The article shows certain changes in the main indicators of market valuation of the leading listed oil and gas companies and identifies the main factors that contributed to these changes. It establishes that the most significant for comparison and valuation are ratios based on balance sheet values of assets and equity, and net sales, EBITDA, DACF and net income ratios are appropriate as auxiliary ratios. The article says that the exchange segment of the industry has increased the debt load, so instead of market capitalization as a component of the coefficients of this group, it is advisable to apply the enterprise value indicator. Conclusions and Relevance. The article concludes that the market sentiments towards the stock market segment of the global oil and gas industry are getting impaired. This is quite natural against the background of falling profitability of most leading companies. The results of the study can be useful in evaluating, forecasting and developing measures to increase the market capitalization and value of listed oil and gas companies.

Subject. I address the impact of market capitalization of oil and gas companies on their contribution to the socio-economic development of regions of presence. Objectives. The purpose is to determine to what extent the factor of high market capitalization of the oil company is crucial in the changing the market environment. Methods. The study draws on methods of economic and statistical analysis. Results. I considered the current state of the Russian oil industry in the context of tax maneuver, and the future evolution of the oil and gas sector from the perspective of government authorities’ desire to develop oil refineries. I performed the financial analysis of operations of two large regional oil companies, namely, Bashneft and Tatneft, examined their contribution to the regions of presence in accordance with the level of market capitalization and ownership structure. The paper highlights the key factors, influencing the contribution of companies to the socio-economic development of regions. Conclusions. In addition to the unfavorable global market conditions, changes in the taxation of oil companies in Russia in the form of tax maneuver are the additive factors that negatively affect the profitability of the industry as a whole. The growth of oil companies’ capitalization has a positive impact on their contribution to the development of regions of presence, depending on the specifics of equity structure. In the face of adverse external factors, the influence of high market capitalization of the oil company reduces drastically due to cumulative decline in business profitability.

Subject. The article analyzes 12 major M&A deals in the public sector of the oil and gas industry in 2000–2019. Industry indicators are measured on the basis of data from ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Occidental Petroleum, Devon Energy, Anadarko Petroleum, EOG Resources, Apache, Marathon Oil, Imperial Oil, Suncor Energy, Husky Energy, Canadian Natural Resources, Royal Dutch Shell, BP, TOTAL, Eni, Equinor (Statoil), PetroChina, Sinopec, CNOOC, Petrobras, Gasprom, Rosneft Oil Company and LUKOIL. Objectives. I study on what terms M&A are concluded in the public sector of the oil industry and analyze the approval and changes in the current premium for control over the ratio of share capital to market capitalization. The article also evaluates how the above deals influenced the market capitalization of companies. Methods. The study employs methods of statistical analysis and summarizing official annual reports on financial and business performance and news releases of major State-owned oil and gas corporations. Results. Having analyzed 12 major M&A in the public sector of the oil and gas industry comprehensively, I traced trends in terms on which such deals are concluded and determined their consequences. Conclusions and Relevance. In the public sector of the oil and gas industry, M&A are found to depend on capitalization, but also sometimes refer to the difference between the market value of assets and liabilities. In the industry, share capital control premium is noted to grow, thus exceeding half of capitalization. Therefore, the least acceptable factors include a combination of high oil prices, commensuration of companies’ capitalization, compensation for share capital and high control premium. On the contrary, market capitalization significantly improved in case of deals implying the compensation with stocks, which took placed during low oil prices.
