The use of bacterial cellulose (BC) in skin wound treatment is very attractive due to its unique characteristics. These dressings’ wet environment is an important feature that ensures efficient healing. In order to enhance the antimicrobial performances, bacterial-cellulose dressings were loaded with amoxicillin and bacitracin as antibacterial agents. Infrared characterization and thermal analysis confirmed bacterial-cellulose binding to the drug. Hydration capacity showed good hydrophilicity, an efficient dressing’s property. The results confirmed the drugs’ presence in the bacterial-cellulose dressing’s structure as well as the antimicrobial efficiency against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The antimicrobial assessments were evaluated by contacting these dressings with the above-mentioned bacterial strains and evaluating the growth inhibition of these microorganisms.

Wound healing is a multi-stage process during which a cascade of molecular and cellular events collaborate to restore the damaged tissue to its healthy state. The inability of the available therapies to effectively heal the wounds has imposed major problems on healthcare systems. Therefore, developing novel therapeutic modalities capable of enhancing wound healing process with no/or limited scar formation is of more importance. Different studies have investigated the potential of phytochemicals on the wound healing process. They have shown to exert anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities as well as promoting collagen synthesis and deposition, leading to enhancing wound healing. Nanotechnology, as an applicable knowledge, has provided versatile means to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of wound treatment. The application of nanoparticles has conferred various advantages in the field of wound treatment. They protect the therapeutics from degradation, release the cargo in a controlled fashion, possess healing properties, and can act as extracellular matrix (ECM) mimic. In this review, we discuss the naturally-occurring compounds with wound healing properties and their nano-formulation for skin wound therapy.

Erythropoietin is the main stimulator of erythropoiesis, but erythropoietin also has non-hematopoietic effects. The recent data show the positive effects of erythropoietin on tissue regeneration. This review highlights the pathophysiological mechanisms of erythropoietin at different stages of tissue regeneration, and possible clinical applications in wound healing. Aim. Study of the world experience of using erythropoietin for the treatment of experimental wounds and the experience of clinical use for the treatment of patients with chronic wounds. Material and methods. The literature was searched in the databases: Pubmed, EMBASE and Google Scholar using the keywords: "Erythropoietin", "EPO", "wounds", "wound treatment", "VEGF", "re-epithelialization", "skin". The search depth was 20 years. When compiling a search strategy, the use of the title of articles, abstracts, as well as conference materials in English, Russian, Kazakh languages was used. Experimental original articles, narrative reviews were included in this review. Results and discussion. To date, there is a sufficient amount of experimental data confirming the effectiveness of EPO on the pathomorphological processes of skin wound healing, but it is still impossible to determine a single mechanism or cellular function that could be responsible for the ability of tissue regeneration mediated by EPO. Conclusion. Research into the ability of erythropoietin to improve tissue regeneration may lead to new insights into this growth hormone for its regular clinical use in patients. The interaction of copaiba oil in the polymer matrix of chitosan can produce a favorable synergistic effect and potentiate properties. Indeed, the bioactive principles present in copaiba oil have anti-inflammatory and healing action. In the present work, chitosan membranes containing different contents of copaiba oil copaíba (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0% (v/v)) were for the first time investigated. The membranes were developed by the casting method and analyzed for their morphology, degree of intumescence, moisture content, contact angle, Scanning Electron Microscope, and X-ray diffractometry. These chitosan/copaiba oil porous membranes disclosed fluid absorption capacity, hydrophilic surface, and moisture. In addition, the results showed that chitosan membranes with the addition of 1.0% (v/v) of copaiba oil presented oil drops with larger diameters, around 123.78 μm. The highest fluid absorption indexes were observed in chitosan membranes containing 0.1 and 0.5% (v/v) of copaiba oil. In addition, the copaiba oil modified the crystalline structure of chitosan. Such characteristics are expected to favor wound treatment. However, biological studies are necessary for the safe use of chitosan/copaiba oil membrane as a biomaterial.

Wounds within the oral mucosa are known to heal more rapidly than skin wounds. Recent studies suggest that differences in the microRNAome profiles may underlie the exceptional healing that occurs in oral mucosa. Here, we test whether skin wound-healing can be accelerating by increasing the levels of oral mucosa-specific microRNAs. A panel of 57 differentially expressed high expresser microRNAs were identified based on our previously published miR-seq dataset of paired skin and oral mucosal wound-healing [Sci. Rep. (2019) 9:7160]. These microRNAs were further grouped into 5 clusters based on their expression patterns, and their differential expression was confirmed by TaqMan-based quantification of LCM-captured epithelial cells from the wound edges. Of these 5 clusters, Cluster IV (consisting of 8 microRNAs, including miR-31) is most intriguing due to its tissue-specific expression pattern and temporal changes during wound-healing. The in vitro functional assays show that ectopic transfection of miR-31 consistently enhanced keratinocyte proliferation and migration. In vivo, miR-31 mimic treatment led to a statistically significant acceleration of wound closure. Our results demonstrate that wound-healing can be enhanced in skin through the overexpression of microRNAs that are highly expressed in the privileged healing response of the oral mucosa.

Abstract Introduction Post-operative haemorrhage is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of thyroid surgery and occurs in 1 in 100 patients. Our aim was to assess current levels of awareness of post-operative haemorrhage in the surgical department and to improve confidence in managing this. Method Questionnaires with a combination of clinical questions were distributed amongst nurses, foundation doctors, senior house officers and registrars in the surgical department. Results There was a clear gap in awareness in all grades. The British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid surgeons (BAETS) have guidance on the management of these patients and in particular the acronym SCOOP (Steristrips removed, Cut subcuticular sutures, Open skin wound, Open strap muscles, Pack wound). 18/24 of participants had not heard of the SCOOP protocol. Most nurses (6/12) all junior doctors (8/8) showed lack of confidence in managing patients with suspected bleeding. Conclusions An informative poster was created for relevant clinical areas as per the BAETS recommendation. These posters outlined the steps in the SCOOP acronymas well as the main clinical signs of haemorrhage. BAETS recommend that all first responders, including nursing staff, junior doctors and the crash team should be aware of the SCOOP protocol. Simulation training sessions are in progress for these members of staff.
