Currently an investigation is ongoing to explore and control an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease, affecting 65 people as of 22 January 2010, in the cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm, south-west Germany. A hitherto unidentified wet cooling system in these twin cities is considered as the most likely source of infection.

We report an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in a nursing home in Slovenia in August 2010 affecting 15 of 234 residents. To date, Legionnaires' disease has been confirmed in four patients. Further serum analyses and genotyping of isolates are ongoing. The building's water distribution system with dead end sections has been identified as the probable source of infection.

This chapter describes Legionnaires’ disease and its importance as a preventable cause of severe pneumonia—one that mainly affects older people and has a high mortality rate. The background information and epidemiology of Legionnaires’ disease describe the salient points succinctly. The approach to surveillance and public health management is described in detail, as, unlike many infectious diseases, the source of infection is in the environment and infection is not spread from person to person. A case study is used to describe a typical scenario, the principles used in the investigation, as well as the management and control of such incidents. Top tips are provided to reinforce key and essential activities.

Due to the absence of elaborated effi cient means for specifi c prevention of bovine tuberculosis, it is ex- tremely important to detect and eliminate the source of infection and to take veterinary and sanitary preven- tive measures. Here the critical role is attributed to disinfection, which breaks the epizootic chain due to the elimination of pathogenic microorganisms in the environment and involves the application of disinfectants of different chemical groups. Aim. To study the tuberculocidal properties of new disinfectants DZPT-2 and FAG against atypical mycobacteria Mycobacterium fortitum and a TB agent Mycobacterium bovis. Methods. The bacteriological and molecular-genetic methods were used. Results. It was determined that DZPT-2 prepara- tion has bactericidal effect on M. fortuitum when used in the concentration of 2.0 % of the active ingredient (AI) when exposed for 5–24 h, while disinfectant FAG has a bactericidal effect in the concentration of 2.0 % when exposed for 24 h. Disinfectant DZPT-2 in the concentration of 2.0 % of the AI, when exposed for 5–24 h, and FAG preparation in the concentration of 2.0 %, when exposed for 24 h, and with the norm of consump- tion rate of 1 cubic decimeter per 1 square meter disinfect the test-objects (batiste, wood, glazed tile, metal, glass), contaminated with the TB agent M. bovis. Conclusions. Disinfecting preparations of DZPT-2 in the concentration of 2.0 % of AI when exposed for 5 h and FAG in the concentration of 2.0 % when exposed for 24 h may be used in the complex of veterinary and sanitary measures to prevent and control TB of farm ani- mals. The possibility of using the polymerase chain reaction as an additional method of estimating tuberculo- cide activity of disinfectants was proven.

Legionnaires’ disease (LD) is a severe pneumonia caused by bacteria belonging to the genus Legionella. This is a major public health concern and infections are steadily increasing worldwide. Several sources of infection have been identified, but they have not always been linked to human isolates by molecular match. The well-known Legionella contamination of private homes has rarely been associated with the acquisition of the disease, although some patients never left their homes during the incubation period. This study demonstrated by genomic matching between clinical and environmental Legionella isolates that the source of an LD cluster was a private building. Monoclonal antibodies and sequence-based typing were used to type the isolates, and the results clearly demonstrated the molecular relationship between the strains highlighting the risk of contracting LD at home. To contain this risk, the new European directive on the quality of water intended for human consumption has introduced for the first time Legionella as a microbiological parameter to be investigated in domestic water systems. This should lead to a greater attention to prevention and control measures for domestic Legionella contamination and, consequently, to a possible reduction in community acquired LD cases.

The overall design of and Advanced Integrated Propulsion System (AIPS), powered by an LV100 gas turbine engine, is presented along with major test accomplishments. AIPS was a demonstrator program that included design, fabrication, and test of an advanced rear drive powerpack for application in a future heavy armored vehicle (54.4 tonnes gross weight). The AIPS design achieved significant improvements in volume, performance, fuel consumption, reliability/durability, weight and signature reduction. Major components of AIPS included the recuperated LV100 turbine engine, a hydrokinetic transmission, final drives, self-cleaning air filtration (SCAF), cooling system, signature reduction systems, electrical and hydraulic components, and control systems with diagnostics/prognostics and maintainability features.
