The subject matter of this paper is the "Soviet language" (SovYaz for short), a variety of Russian that was used in official contexts during the Soviet period. The use of the term "Soviet language" does not signify a commitment to viewing it as a language or a dialect in the linguistic sense. The question of whether SovYaz is, in fact, a social dialect sensu stricto, is beyond the scope of this paper and irrelevant to its purposes, although the materials presented here may help clarify the argument. This study of SovYaz seeks to utilize three relatively recent developments: newly opened archives with previously unimaginable sources of linguistic data; abundant searchable texts in electronic form; and a powerful new research tool, the National Corpus of the Russian Language (NCRL). The goal is methodological--to illustrate an approach to the study of SovYaz made possible by these new developments. The paper makes extensive use of the following procedure. First, a feature of SovYaz is identified in two documents selected for close reading, one a newspaper article, the other a top-secret NKVD report. That feature is then traced through other sources, including NCRL. The evolution of the feature is followed from the pre-revolutionary period to later times, sometimes all the way to the 21st century. Finally, the feature is described in some detail. In my experience, the emergence of the National Corpus makes possible a research methodology that transcends a close reading of selected documents but works well with it.

The authors tried to analyze how the pivotal historical moments of Russian-Lebanese relations influenced the conditions for teaching the Russian language in Lebanon. The article provides a brief description of the programs and methods used in various educational institutions for teaching Russian in Lebanon, depending on the form in which it was in demand for its functioning (at one stage or another). First as a language taught in some Moscow schools of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society, then as a language for preserving the Russian culture of the Diaspora initially formed by first wave immigrants and finally at the present stage, Russian as a foreign language or as a native language for bilingual children of compatriots living in Lebanon.

The article studies the process of establishment of Andronyk Stepovych Kyiv Private Boys Gymnasium in 1906–1913s. The analysis is made on the materials of archival documents of the funds of Manuscript Institute of Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. The problems that Anronyk Stepovych, the founder of the institution, faced are indicated. The features of the functioning of the gymnasium and its place in the educational process of Kiev at the beginning of the 20th century are shown. Having founded a gymnasium, Andronyk Stepovych tried to improve the educational level of the youth in the region. Special efforts were aimed at attracting children from low-income families to the educational process. Realizing this plan, he had to overcome many organizational, administrative, material, and other difficulties. The introduction of self-management in the institution at the level of teachers and students was one of the important tasks that the gymnasium set itself. However, the tough and inconsistent policy of the Ministry of Public Education did not allow to do this as well as prohibited any independence for private educational institutions. In addition, every year the Kyiv private gymnasium lost a number of privileges, which made the work of the gymnasium impossible. The management and staff of Kyiv educationaldistrict body with their belated orders, meticulous inspections brought the gymnasium to almost complete destruction. As a result, the gymnasium operated in 1906–1913. Over the years, more than a thousand children acquired education at the educational institution where by Andronyk Stepovych Kyiv Private Boys Gymnasium made its contribution to the growth of the number of educated youth of Kyiv region.
