Abstract Anatomical models were widely used in the teaching of natural history between the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century. Nowadays, they still are an important didactic resource in many historical institutions of secondary school education and museums in Spain. We study the three-dimensional models of the French firm Les Fils d’Émile Deyrolle, which offered a reproduction of organisms and structures related to botany. We focused our study on one of the most complete collection - kept in the historic laboratory of biology of the University of Murcia. Its technical characteristics, functioning, as well as its didactic function and associated contents have been included in our analysis.

Abstract. The representation of the areas in which some of the most significant events of the First World War took place has produced a wide range of materials, such as cartography, aerial and terrestrial photos, textual descriptions and field surveys. In addition, war events were also represented through three-dimensional models. Topographic maps and models constitute composite figurations, which are rich in informative data useful for the preservation of the memory of places and for increasing the knowledge of cultural heritage. Hence, these sources need to be studied, described, interpreted and used for future enhancement. The focus of this paper are archival materials from the collections kept at the Italian War History Museum of Rovereto (Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra), in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Firstly, we will investigate the cartographic fond in order to assess the composition and origin of its materials. Secondly, we will present the Museum’s collection of Early-Twentieth Century models. Such precious heritage is not yet part of an exhibition, and is kept in the Museum’s warehouses. The paper constitutes the occasion to present the initial results of a still ongoing project by the Geo-Cartographic Centre for Study and Documentation (GeCo) of the University of Trento on the study and analysis of two archival complexes preserved in the abovementioned Museum. In particular, the paper focuses on the heuristic value of such representational devices, which enable an analysis of the different methods and languages through which space is planned and designed, emphasizing the complementarity between different types of visualization.

Abstract: P. Craig Russell has stood out, among other contributions, for his work in making a long series of adaptations from the world of opera to comic. Russell's style is characterized by starting from the idea of adapting a musical work to a plastic and visual medium, making it not only become the simple narration of a musical opera, but also creates a work in itself in which he tries to collect different stylistic, structural and aesthetic sensations of the work and generate a representation of them. In this article we will use his adaptation of Salomé, an opera by Richard Strauss from 1905 based on the play of the same name by Oscar Wilde. The idea of musicalization of the comic will be discussed and the way in which Russell expresses different musical ideas referring not only to timbres, leitmotivs or orchestration, but also taking into account different parameters that encompass Strauss's work around the idea of maximalization and decadence of art from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

From port city to the port as a multifunctional space. The Gran Caribe ports in the 19th century. Abstract In this article I study the problem about the port area importance and its impacts on social and cultural arrangement of maritime and river cities. My idea is focused on small areas located in the historic centers that hold port activities and labors that ruled the whole life of these populations. These areas were vital but due to new activities, urban and population growth in the first half of the 20th century, they were taken to the cities’ outskirts and were isolated from other urban areas and activities that had been with for several centuries. The main argument of this paper says that in comparison to Mediterranean cities that were organized around the main square, port cities had duality between the space for important people, civil and ecclesiastical authorities as a residence place, and because of that for social control. The port main square was built from down to up by its somehow multifunctionality. The port importance in urban life was because of the activities diversity it had, as it was a working, cultural exchange, and marketplace place, as well as entertainment and leisure site. This marked the society ports in a unique way as it defined different social, cultural, labor dynamics from Mediterranean cities. Keywords: ports, Gran Caribe, a port city, multifunctional space, port main square, main square.

The exhibition of two mummies in the Natural History cabinet in Paris aroused the interest of various scientific expeditions that made a stopover in Tenerife in the first half of the 19th century. Nicolas Baudin’s expedition in 1800 coincided with the discovery of a cave with mummies in El Sauzal and three ended up in the university museums of Montpellier and Göttingen and one in the cabinet of Saviñón. Another mummy was given to von Krusenstern’s Russian expedition of 1803, currently in the museum of Saint Petersburg. A new cave with mummies was discovered ca. 1815 in Tacoronte, which ended up in the scientific cabinet of Megliorini. Another mummy located in Valleseco, Santa Cruz, around 1823, was sold in Puerto de la Cruz to a Swiss merchant for the Geneva museum.

Following an introductory essay, six short contributions by academics and museum curators in the United States (US) and Europe tackle the current state and future of Pre-Columbian visual culture studies. They explore the field’s impressive growth in this century, as well as some of the dangers it currently faces as a result of that growth. Several trace its present state to its origins and the part played by early Mexican and US nationalism, the popularity of world’s fairs, and the civil rights movement, among other factors. Also considered are problems inherent in the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century separation of the preconquest past from the newly labeled colonial period, as well as the concurrent embrace of the term “Pre-Columbian.” Other essays take a hard look at the present and future relation of art history to archaeology and cross-disciplinary studies within the field, which is defined in part by their dependence on, or skepticism regarding, iconography. Whereas academics wrestle in these essays with the implications of a declining job market, museum curators struggle with limited funding. Nonetheless, possible new strategies and opportunities for the future are proposed, including engagement with issues posed by the rising interest in decoloniality and global indigeneity.

Changes of Dnieper’s islands’ landscapes within Kyiv at the example of Velykiy Pivnichniy Island are studied. Using GIS, cartographic materials and remote sensing data the island’s square dynamic for more than seventy years is obtained. During decoding vector layers – the contours of the coastline of the island and the island area – were created and island’s square for 1942, 1975, 1985, 1990, 2000, 2015 years was estimated. Using module implemented in ArcScene ArcGIS the dynamics of long-term changes of Velykiy Island’s shape was modeled and clearly reflected in the form of three-dimensional models. The coastal landscape of Kyiv began to rapidly change for the past 100-200 years due to rapid urban sprawl. Before it Dnieper’s backwater in Kyiv formed by glaciers and it became the basis for floodplain in Kyiv region for a long time. In the 19th century held-rectifying work was conducted and it greatly influenced the coastal landscape of our city. Formation of new islands, such as Grand Island and changes of old islands (such as the island of Murom united with Truhanov Island) has begun. Great Island consisted of 2 parts, one of which joined the island much later than the first part of the island was formed. From 1950 to 1990 the island had the largest area and it was unchanged while this period. The rapid square reduction began in the 1990s when sand mining started for the purpose of Troieshchyna district building. Currently the island is used as a career for the extraction of sand, which is important for development of different districts, including cottages on the site of meadows and oak forests on north of the Gulf of Camel. It is a negative factor for the island, where there are different species of animals and plants are located. The island is also an example of modern Dnieper floodplain formation and it should be preserved as a conservation area of the city.

The present work consists of a historiographic analysis of the protagonism that the different ethnic groups had in Ecuador's War of Independence according to the history textbooks published between 1915 and 2015. History school textbooks have been used as historiographic sources, because since the 20th century Ecuadorian educational policies have used them as ideological instruments to carry out the construction of a common national identity based on the assumptions of the 19th century Patriotic History. The use of the teaching of history through school texts to consolidate this 19th century national identity is evident in the analysis of the ethnic protagonism in the Independence, where these texts explain this event as a project of national construction directed by the Creole elites whose supposed main objective was to free all “Ecuadorians” from an alleged monarchical oppression exercised by a foreign enemy: the “Spanish”. Although some authors have stated that indigenous people, blacks, mestizos, zambos, pardos, mulatos and cholos obtained few benefits from Independence, all the school texts do not hesitate to confirm that thanks to the efforts of the Creole elites, heroes of the country who are to be venerated and praised, the Republic of Ecuador was able to be free.
