Dramaga sub-district is an area that has rice fields close to buffalo stalls and a population of wild Macaca fascicularis as natural hosts for several species of Plasmodium. This causes the Dramaga sub-district to become a potential vector habitat for malaria, including Anopheles vagus. This study aims to analyze distribution of An. vagus larval stage in 4 villages (Cikarawang, Babakan, Margajaya, and Ciherang) in Dramaga subdistrict which have paddy field areas. Larvae were collected using a dipper, and each collection sites of the larvae habitat were marked using Global Positioning System. The physical characteristics of the water habitat measured were temperature, pH, total dissolved solids and the electrical conductivity of the water. Pearson's correlation test was used to analyze the relationship between the number of larvae An. vagus with each of the parameters water physical characteristics. The results of this study obtained 309 An. vagus larvae from the 27 collection points. Larvae of An. vagus was found in 3 villages (i.e. Cikarawang, Babakan and Ciherang), but was not found in Margajaya village. The habitat characteristics of An. vagus in paddy fields showed a water temperature of 26.6-31.7oC, pH 6.40-8.10, the total dissolved solid 36-285 ppm, and the electrical conductivity 72-262 μm/cm. The Pearsons correlation test results did not show a significant difference between the number of An. vagus larvae and each parameter (r= -0.26, 0.13, -0.15 and -0.16, respectively). The presence of An. vagus in this area could be considered in malaria vector control programs.

In this study, the Bodna River was analyzed for some physicochemical parameters. The main aim of the study was to determine the effect of human activities on the physical, chemical and biological properties of the river, and to enhance systemable usage for conservation and management. The water quality parameters examined were Temperature, pH, Transparency, Salinity, Total dissolved solids (TDS), Dissolved oxygen (DO) and Electrical Conductivity (EC) for the four sampling stations from May 2018 to April 2019. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the pH values of the river ranging between (7.16 to 7.20) in all the sampling stations. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) showed significance differences (p<0.05) in other parameters across the months. The result showed that air temperature ranged from 32.10±0.73 to 36.15±0.17 oc, water temperature from 30.20±0.94 to 34.30±0.22oc, transparency ranged from 5.9±0.61cm to 18.7±6.17cm, Salinity varied 2.08±0.06 to 3.15±0.50 mg/l. Total dissolved solid (TDS) was between 33.50±7.91 and 83.85±21.06mg/l. Dissolved oxygen (DO) ranged from 6.23±0.05 to 8.28±0.10 mg/l and Electrical conductivity (EC) ranged from 40.00±4.32 to 87.25±19.97ꭒ/s. The parameters were correlated within the stations. The results from the study showed that most of the physicochemical parameters were within the accepted values for consumption, biodiversity, productivity, domestic usage and are below pollution level.

Abstract Background Vector control is an essential component in prevention and control of malaria in malaria endemic areas. Insecticide treated nets is one of the standard tools recommended for malaria vector control. The objective of the study was to determine physical integrity and insecticidal potency of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) used in control of malaria vector in Kirinyaga County, Kenya. Method The study targeted households in an area which had received LLINs during mass net distribution in 2016 from Ministry of Health. A total of 420 households were sampled using systematic sampling method, where the household heads consented to participate in the study. A semi-structured questionnaire was administered to assess care and use while physical examination was used to determine integrity. Chemical concentration was determined by gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). Data analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 19. Results After 18 months of use, 96.9% (95% CI: 95.2–98.6%) of the distributed nets were still available. Regarding net utilization, 94.1% of household heads reported sleeping under an LLIN the previous night. After physical examination, 49.9% (95% CI: 43–52.8%) of the bed nets had at least one hole. The median number of holes of any size was 2[interquartile range (IQR) 1–4], and most holes were located on the lower part of the nets, [median 3 (IQR 2–5)]. Only 15% of the nets with holes had been repaired. The median concentration for α-cypermethrin was 7.15 mg/m2 (IQR 4.25–15.31) and 0.00 mg/g (IQR 0.00–1.99) for permethrin. Based on pHI, Chi-square test varied significantly with the manufacturer (X (6, N = 389) = 29.14, p = 0.04). There was no significant difference between nets with different number of washes (X2(2) = 4.55, p = 0.103). Conclusion More than three-quarters of the nets supplied had survived and insecticidal potency was adequate in vector control. Standard procedure for field evaluation of surface insecticidal content available to a mosquito after landing on a net to rest is recommended.

AbstractIncrease in machinery size and its random traffic at fields cause soil compaction resulting in damage of soil structure and degradation of soil functions. Nowadays, rapid methods to detect soil compaction at fields are of high interest, especially proximal sensing methods such as electrical conductivity measurements. The aim of this work was to investigate whether electromagnetic induction (EMI) could be used to determine trafficked areas in silty clay soil. Results of randomized block experiment showed a high significant difference (p <0.01) in EMI data measured between compacted and non-compacted areas. EMI readings from compacted areas were, on average, 11% (shallow range) and 9% (deep range) higher than non-compacted areas, respectively. This difference was determined in both shallow and deep measuring ranges, indicating that the difference in soil compaction was detected in both topsoil and subsoil. Furthermore, the data was found to have a significant spatial variability, suggesting that, in order to detect the increase in EMI (which shows the increase in soil compaction), data within close surrounding area should be included in the analyses. Correlation coefficient of EMI and penetration resistance (average moisture content 32.5% and 30.8% for topsoil and subsoil) was found to be 0.66.

The excessive animal trampling, together with the lack of conservation practices and adequate soil becomes compacted this, having a significant increase in density, caused by loads or pressures applied in this soil. The Tocantins state is characterized by livestock, particularly cattle, however, there are producers who create small animals such as ovinocaprinos. In literature there are few reports on the effect of trampling on the physical characteristics of an gleysol. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of two systems for livestock, Cattle and ovinocaprino on the physical attributes of an gleysol, located in the southern state of Tocantins. For it was rated the macro and micro-porosity, density and penetration resistance of both systems, separated by compartments. As a result there was a significant difference for the variable density, macro-and micro-porosity and mechanical strength, and it varied depending on the depth of the soil profile.

Currently, formulations of skin moisturizers are derived from natural compounds. Fixed oils are known to have compounds that potential to be developed as skin moisturizers based on emollient mechanism. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of oil type on the physical characteristics of skin moisturizer creams. In this study, a skin moisturizer cream was formulated using three types of fixed oils: VCO (F1), Olive Oil (F2), and Jojoba Oil (F3). All formulas were tested for physical characteristics of pH, cream type, viscosity, spreadability, and homogeneity. The test results show that all formulas appropriate to the skin pH range,  have o/w type creams and homogeneous texture. In the results of the viscosity test, there was a significant difference (p<0.05) with the highest value of viscosity for F2 (16750 ± 250 cP) > F3 (14200 ± 346cP) > F1 (5833 ± 58 cP), while for spreadability test there were also significant differences (p<0.05) with the highest diameter for  F1 (5.8 ± 0.1 cm) = F3 (5.7 ± 0.2 cm) > F2 (4.3 ± 0.2 cm). Based on the results, it can be concluded that the type of oil can affect the physical characteristics of the moisturizer formula. F1 and F3 have better physical characteristics than F2.

Assessment of soil and soil-water salinity is essential in agricultural production, therefore it is necessary to find out the non-costly, effective, rapid and reliable integrated methodology for this purpose. The paper presents the results of using the electromagnetic induction instrument EM31-MK2Ô in combination with collecting and analyzing soil and soil-water samples, and applying GIS and geostatistical techniques to assess the current status of soil and soil-water salinity in Ben Tre province. Apparent soil electrical conductivity ECa measured from ground surface to 6 m in depth increases from inland to the sea in northwest - southeast direction; ECa is closely related to topsoil salinity to 30 cm deep and to soil-water salinity at depth of 10–100 cm. Current status of soil and soil-water salinity in 2018 was assessed with a 4-fold increase in information, from 16 km2/data point to 4 km2/data point. Consequently four maps were established, consisting of electrical conductivity ECe and total solube salt TSS distributions of soil; electrical conductivity σw and total dissolved solid TDS distributions of soil-water.

Background and Study Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between personality traits and optimal performance mood in response to gender, sports branch, weekly training hours of the athletes competing in the university league variables. Material and Methods: A total of 250 volunteer athletes from 17 universities, 75 female and 175 male, participated in the study. 95 of the athletes are basketball and 155 are volleyball players. In addition to the personal information form which includes demographic information prepared by the researchers, “Optimal Performance Mood Scale” developed by Jackson and Eklund (2004) and adapted to Turkish by Aşçı et al. (2007) and “5-factor personality traits scale” developed by Benet-Martinez, John (1998) and adapted to Turkish by Schmitt, Allik, McCrae and Benet-Martinez (2007) were applied to the participants. Frequency analysis was applied in order to determine the participants’ demographic information based on the statistical data analysis, and unpaired t-test was applied to determine the personal traits and optimal performance mood scores in response to gender, branch, weekly training sessions. Furthermore, in order to determine the relationship between that personal traits and optimal performance moods correlation test was applied. Statistical significance level was accepted as p <0.05. Results: As a result of the analysis of the data obtained; while there was no significant difference between the athletes according to the gender variable, it was concluded that there was a significant difference between sports branch, weekly sport variables and personality traits and optimal performance moods. In addition, a positive correlation was found between the participants' personality traits and optimal performance moods as a result of the correlation test (r=0,608). Conclusions: This study has proved that personality traits and optimal performance moods effect one another positively and gender variable makes no significant difference. Yet, sport branches and weekly training hours makes meaningful differences between general and subscales scores.

<p>Plantain flour was prepared from matured-unripe fruits of Agbagba cultivar, protein concentrate was prepared from bambara groundnut seeds using the alkaline extraction method, plantain cookies were produced using different levels of plantain flour substituted with bambara groundnut protein concentrate ranging from 0-25% and using 100% wheat flour as control. Physical characteristics, proximate composition, sensory properties and in-vitro protein digestibility of the cookie samples were determined. Cookies prepared from 15% bambara groundnut protein concentrate and 85% plantain flour compared favourably in physical characteristics (weight, height, diameter and hardness) with the control (100% wheat flour). Addition of bambara groundnut protein concentrate significantly improved the crude protein content (17.8%), ash content (2.8%), crude fibre (9.2%) and energy (434.0 kcal/100g) of the cookies compared to values obtained from 100% wheat flour. Sensory evaluation showed that cookies with 15% bambara groundnut protein concentrate and 85% plantain flour was preferred in terms of colour, flavor and general acceptability with mean scores of 8.1, 8.3 and 7.8, respectively and showed no significant difference (P ? 0.05) with the control with mean scores of 8.6, 8.5 and 8.0, respectively. However, in-vitro protein digestibility of the cookies increased from 2.74% in cookies with 100% plantain flour to 62.81% in samples with 25% bambara groundnut protein concentrate and 75% plantain flour.</p>

Most current guidelines recommend prescribing second-generation antihistamines (SGAs) over first-generation antihistamines because SGAs are less likely to cause sedation and impairment of heavy work performance. However, common residents who use these antihistamines as over-the-counter (OTC) medicines are less likely to know that. So, this study was designed to compare the over-the-counter use of antihistamines by common residents with the prescribing preferences of physicians residing at Dhaka City, Bangladesh. Between June and August of 2017, a total of 100 Physicians from some of the top medical institutions of the city and 350 randomly selected common residents were directly interviewed with two separate semistructured questionnaires specifically designed for each population. Data was statistically analyzed using Fischer’s exact test, Spearman’s rank correlation test and Kendall’s tau rank correlation test. The data shows that physicians prefer second-generation antihistamines with fexofenadine (48.09% of the total responses), desloratadine (16.03%), and rupatadine (13.74%) taking the top spots. Cetirizine (29.46% of total responses), desloratadine (14.73%), and chlorpheniramine (14.52%) were the most used OTC antihistamines by the common residents. Statistical analysis with Fischer’s exact test revealed that the difference in preference of first-generation antihistamines between physicians and common residents were extremely significant (p<0.0001). Furthermore, cetirizine (which is known to have some degree of sedating activity) and chlorpheniramine are more preferred among common residents than among physicians (extremely significant difference, p<0.0001 in both cases). The study concludes that physicians of Dhaka City are complying with practice guidelines, but sedating antihistamines still retain some popularity among the common residents. Hence, a more engaging community pharmacy is needed to minimize adverse effects that can arise from OTC use of sedating antihistamines.
