An 8-years-old, domestic short-haired cat was presented for constipation and symptoms referable to the lower urinary tract. A solid mass located in the caudal area of the abdomen was palpated. Abdominal ultrasonography, positive-contrast retrograde urethrocystography and total body computed tomography showed the presence of a prostatic neoformation occupying almost completely the pelvic cavity. The neoformation displaced dorsolaterally the descending colon and completely englobed the prostatic urethra, without apparent involvement of the urethral lumen. Histopathologic examination revealed a prostatic carcinoma. Neoplastic cells showed a moderate to intense cytoplasmatic expression of AE1/AE3, while no expression of cytokeratin 7 and Uroplakin III was observed. Topographical, histological and immunohistochemical findings were consistent with a diagnosis of primary adenocarcinoma of the prostate body

Dogs with benign intra-pelvic rectal or vaginal masses show symptoms indicating compression on the adjacent organs. Clinical signs usually develop late when the lesion is large enough to interfere functionally. The dogs were referred for severe fecal and/or urinary tenesmus. The data collected included signalment, clinical signs, results of physical examination, pre-surgical diagnostic tests, surgical technique used, surgical complications and histological findings. Digital rectal and vaginal examination allowed the detection of a mass occupying space in the pelvic cavity in all patients. Abdominal ultrasonography and/or total body computed tomography (CT) were used to better characterize the lesion and to exclude a metastatic spread of the tumor in case of malignancy. A dorsal approach to the rectum, a dorsal episiotomy, a midline celiotomy, and a combined perineal and abdominal approach were performed to remove the mass. No postoperative complications were observed. Benign and well-differentiated malignant mesenchymal neoplasms were histologically diagnosed. As a consequence of the chronic urethral compression caused by the mass, urinary incontinence and/or urinary retention were observed for a few postoperative days. Fecal tenesmus resolved in all cases in the immediate postoperative period. The dogs’ quality of life quickly improved after surgery, especially considering the serious and life-threatening pre-surgical clinical conditions. Both the recovery time after surgery and overall survival were also evaluated.

Primary adrenal leiomyosarcoma is extremely rare tumor. We report a case with adrenal leiomyosarcoma. Our case was a 48-year-old man who presented with lower urinary tract symptoms. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed approximately 9 cm solid mass originating from right adrenal gland. He underwent right adrenalectomy. Pathology of the specimen showed histologic and immunohistochemical features of adrenal leiomyosarcoma.

ABSTRACTColistin-induced nephrotoxicity is a dose-limiting adverse effect when colistin is used against Gram-negative pathogens. This study examined the nephroprotective effect of melatonin against colistin in rats. Rats (n= 7 per group) were treated intravenously twice daily with saline, colistin (at increasing doses from 0.5 to 4.0 mg/kg), melatonin (5 mg/kg), or both melatonin and colistin for 7 days. The severity of renal alteration was examined both biochemically and histologically. The effect of coadministration of melatonin on colistin pharmacokinetics was investigated. Significantly lower urinaryN-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase excretion was observed from day 1 in the colistin-melatonin group compared to the colistin group (P< 0.0001). Plasma creatinine increased significantly (P= 0.023) only in the colistin group on day 6. Significant histological abnormalities (P< 0.0001) were detected only in the kidneys of the colistin group. Melatonin altered colistin pharmacokinetics; the total body clearance in the colistin-melatonin group (1.82 ± 0.26 ml/min/kg) was lower than in the colistin group (4.28 ± 0.93 ml/min/kg). This is the first study demonstrating the protective effect of melatonin against colistin-induced nephrotoxicity, which indicates that colistin-induced nephrotoxicity is mediated through oxidative stress. It also highlights the potential of coadministering an antioxidant to widen the therapeutic window of this very important last-line antibiotic.

A 22-year-old man was admitted with complaints of dyspnea and hoarseness. Laryngoscopy and computed tomography of the neck revealed a 1.5 × 2-cm solid mass obstructing the trachea. The black, pedunculated mass was completely removed through a tracheal incision, and a paratracheal lymph node dissection was performed. Histopathologic examination revealed nodular-type mucosal malignant melanoma. Cranial and thoracic computed tomography, abdominal ultrasonography, and histopathologic examination of the paratracheal lymph nodes showed no metastases. No recurrence has been noted in more than 3 years of follow-up.

The radiological differences between the urinary tract of  Dicentrarchus labrax,Sparus aurata,Tinca tinca, andCyprinus carpioare shown. In fresh water teleosts the urinary bladder is sigmoid and a short urethra leads to the urinary pore. Genital and anal pores are present. InSparus auratathe urinary bladder has a globoid shape. InDicentrarchus labraxthe urinary bladder is smaller and elongate. In both marine teleosts a single urogenital pore is visible. Positive contrast was used to survey the urogenital system and evaluate shape and size of the bladder, urethra, ureter, and gonadal ducts. Results demonstrate the morphological variability of the urinary bladder and the craniodorsal entry of the ureters into the bladder. It is envisaged that this work will provide baseline information for further imaging studies for investigating the urogenital morphology and can be applied to identify disorders in fishes. Furthermore, the main interest of this study is that it demonstrates the morphological variability of the lower urinary system that exists between different species of fishes.

This report describes our experience with two cases that were ultimately diagnosed as retroperitoneal liposarcoma using endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA). Case 1 is that of a 54-year-old woman with chief complaints of nausea and abdominal distention. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a large (15 cm diameter) tumor, which was significantly compressing the stomach and apparently occupied the entire left abdominal cavity. Although advanced primary gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) or retroperitoneal tumor was inferred as the differential diagnosis, a definitive diagnosis was difficult using imaging alone. After EUS-FNA was done, the tumor was diagnosed histopathologically as high-grade liposarcoma. Case 2 is that of a 73-year-old man. Abdominal ultrasonography and CT showed a 6 cm diameter tumor within the pelvic cavity. The tumor had high MRI signal-intensity on both T1 and T2 images. Endorectal EUS showed a hyperechoic mass. The images suggested lipoma or liposarcoma containing lipoma-like components. Myxoid liposarcoma was revealed by subsequent EUS-FNA. Performing EUS-FNA was clinically useful for determining the subsequent therapeutic strategy in these cases where a tumor of unknown origin existed in the retroperitoneum.

Children who require roentgen evaluation of the urinary tract need examination of the entire tract, which is accomplished with a cystourethrogram and an intravenous pyelogram. Cystourethrography yields a higher incidence of pathology than intravenous pyelography, but the procedures are complementary to each other. Intravenous pyelography, which examines the upper urinary tract, includes a large volume dosage of contrast agent, double injection, fluoroscopy, and multiple films during peak excretion, all applied according to the needs of the individual patient. Cystourethrography evaluates the lower urinary tract and utilizes nonirritating contrast agents, fluoroscopy, and sequential spot-films. Retrograde pyelography is indicated only when the collecting system is not visualized by either the intravenous pyelogram or refluxing cystogram. Fluoroscopy and multiple spotfilms assure accuracy in detection and documentation of pathology. Total body opacification is helpful in evaluating abdominal masses of small infants.

Aims and background Metastasis to the brain from prostate carcinoma is a rare event; it is reported in less than 4% of postmortem examinations. The prevalence of cases detected antemortem is even smaller, and the prevalence of brain stem metastasis as the only site of metastasis has been reported in only two other cases. Method The authors present a third such case. Results A 55-year-old man, treated for an adenocarcinoma of the prostate (prostatectomy and radiotherapy), started to complain of facial expression disturbances and headaches 2 years later. Physicial examination showed a left VII cranial nerve palsy. MRI showed an enhancing mass in the pons. Total body CT was negative. The patient was treated with a course of whole-brain and brain stem radiotherapy following stereotactic biopsy. Four months after radiotherapy, the neurological symptoms had disappeared and the patient died of a myocardial infarct. The systemic disease was still clinically silent. Conclusion Our case involved only brain stem metastasis, probably implicating Batson's direct route of the paravertebral venous pathway.
