Purpose Previous studies on innovation tend to view innovation as consisting of a creative phase of novel and useful ideas, and a non-creative, or at least a less creative phase, as this considered to be the mere implementation and validation of the initially created ideas. In contrast, this paper aims to stress on the significance of the process of validating a new idea as being a creative, learning, exploratory process that shapes the degree of novelty of the innovation as a whole. Design/methodology/approach In driving this argument, this study deductively builds on a theoretical pre-understanding derived from extant literature related to management innovation and organizational legitimacy, and inductively draws on information gleaned from three in-depth case studies. Findings The study shows that the validation phase in the innovation process is a creative process, rather than just being a set of activities that relate to the mere execution of the created ideas. Viewing the validation process as an exploratory search for new knowledge, this study establishes a relationship between the form of knowledge mobilized, vertically within an organization or horizontally from outside, and the form of legitimation required. Validation based on internally generated knowledge is effective in terms of achieving pragmatic (efficiency-driven) objectives. Inter-organizational knowledge inflows are associated with cognitive legitimacy – a form of legitimacy that leads to changes in the stakeholders’ beliefs about a the product. In contradistinction, horizontal, socio–cultural inflows of knowledge are likely to improve on the product itself, thereby generating more traction for validation. Research limitations/implications This research is based on data collected from three firms only. Practical implications The idea developed here can provide business organizations a better understanding of the validation process of management innovations. This study suggests that successful innovation often requires managers to be prepared to seek knowledge beyond the confines of their own organizations. Originality/value This study contributes in three ways: it submits that there is a dynamic interplay between the moments of creation and validation, which is largely shaped by the novelty of the mobilized knowledge, depending on whether it is internal top–down or external horizontal; relatedly, the effectiveness of validation is shaped by the novelty of the knowledge garnered to justify the initial ideas; and the present paper has extended Suchman’s (1995) framework by linking the effectiveness of the various forms of legitimacy to the source of knowledge mobilized in the validation process.

This study aims to explain the innovation process and driving factors in the mosque. This is important because innovation is too focused on the economic sector, forgetting religious institutions. Modern mosques continue to display stretching innovation, but previous studies have not been explaining how to the process. 12 innovative programs in Masjid At-Taqwa Anggut owned by Bengkulu City Government have been appointed as cases. We conducted in-depth interviews with 11 mosque officials and 7 days were used for observation. Seeing how the innovation process, we have used keyword discovery techniques and data categorization. We found a relatively similar pattern in every program. The innovation process in At-Taqwa Anggut starts the needs of worshipers, idea generation, Islamic focus discussion, development, and program execution. Requesting perspective to the Mosque Sharia Council (Islamic expert) is an interesting process. It turned out to be a unique finding because the general framework had not yet been published. Three of the driving factors considered to have a strong influence are the mayor's leadership, the love of the mosque, and the spirituality motivation in the motto of fastabikul khairat. Keywords: Innovation, Mosque Management, Religious Institution

This research aims to investigate the relation of the innovation types such as service innovation, process innovation and management innovation with the performance. Additionally, this study will also focus on whether there is a mediator role of technological capability and organizational learning on performance. The research data were collected from 306 principals and teachers working in medium-large scaled high schools in Istanbul. The research results showed that, as hypothesized, the types of innovations significantly correlated with the performance. Besides, organizational learning and technological capability had partially a mediating effect in the relationship between the innovation types and performance.

Purpose This research aims to provide a historical example of how an innovation champion radically changed the operations of the circus industry by incorporating both the rational and actuation models in his scaling-up innovations. The innovations to the logistics and operations of the P. T. Barnum Circus, “The Greatest Show on Earth”, created by William C. Coup in response to the massive technological development of integrated railroad systems offer new insights into how management effectuation operates through the capabilities and experiences of an innovation champion. Design/methodology/approach The authors use a theoretically anchored longitudinal study that captures the mechanisms and processes of innovation by adopting an explorative, inductive research design in the form of a single in-depth case analysis. Findings Coup’s contributions show how the management innovation process works and adds detail with regard to how a champion of change may succeed in an effectuation process. Coup’s management innovation was in scaling-up others’ innovations. In an effectuation process similar to what entrepreneurs must do when their new ideas find a growing market acceptance, Coup repeatedly scaled-up others’ ideas in ways that changed how his industry operated. Originality/value Although there is some agreement on how management influences innovation in their organizations, research identifying the characteristics of managers that cause them to be innovation champions is still evolving and this current work adds to this endeavor. This work provides a rich illustration of an innovation champion’s use of effectuation as a process of experimentation to discover pragmatic and effective solutions to problems arising from the use of new technology or scaling business models to levels never before imagined.

This chapter introduces an action research methodology called Social Practice Design and its application in the case of a small-medium enterprise production management innovation process. Social Practice Design includes three main phases: observation and the production of how questions; analysis and the production of visions of solutions; synthesis and the production of action plans or SPD paths. Social Practice Design is proposed as an extension of Participatory Design to the implementation phase of Information Systems Development. The research team in Social Practice Design includes three modes of knowing: the ethnographer, the counsellor, and the action researcher modes of knowing.

The Russian Corporation has to work on new principles of functioning in modern social and economic conditions, and implementation of innovative activity is undoubtedly the main and necessary condition which should be created for it. However, innovative activity of the organization depends on maintaining and developing competencies in a straight line, for which, in turn, the corporate memory is needed as a certain framework. In this paper, the role and tasks of corporate memory in the innovation process is considered, its sources are given, and the stages of corporate memory functioning model are presented.
