Island floras have been subject to catastrophic changes since human colonization; the Hawaiian Islands exemplify this pattern of species decline and ecological change. Archaeological and historic findings support the former existence of coastal, lowland and interior Pritchardia dominated forests. Wild Pritchardia populations are highly fragmented and exhibit poor or absent regeneration in the wild. This study records seed predation, goat grazing, pig damage, and human harvesting on six wild populations of three species and outlines requirements for the long-term management of wild populations. Only one population of the six studied was found to contain seedlings. Recommended conservation management strategies are outlined.

With the development of the design industry, industrial design is becoming increasingly significant in manufacturing industry. Under the background of developing the manufacturing industry, industrial design based on the manufacturing industry in the central regions hasn’t been fully accepted or applied. This paper which taken Wuhan city in the central regions for example, analyzes the current development situation of industrial design firstly then provides a development management proposal of industrial design in the central regions based on the analysis above.

El presente trabajo constituye una aproximación preliminar al estudio de la actividad de las corridas de ganado en el Departamento de Molinos en los Valles Calchaquíes septentrionales, Salta, Argentina. Se toma como caso el evento de la “separada” de animales, que es la culminación del gran evento de la “corrida”, el cual consta de un desarrollo secuenciado y pautado, de alcance temporal y espacial en la región. Se intenta realizar un aporte al estudio de las estrategias de manejo del ambiente en los Valles Calchaquíes salteños septentrionales, a través del caso de las corridas de ganado en Molinos. Grazing activities of indigenous sheep breed of the Turkish breed Karakaş and Koçeri which were transhumance flocks were investigated in a typical unimproved mountainous pasture in the East of Turkey. Data were collected from two different flocks on main daily activities (grazing, resting, moving or standing) every fifteen minutes. The characteristics of the pastures around the routes were assessed according to CORINE Land Cover classification system. Standing was a residual activity in both study paths. The animals concentrated their activity mostly on grazing while resting and moving occurred in specific times during the whole grazing period. Once the animals were heading back to their main settlement areas to be milked, grazing activity have been increased. Further studies on grazing behavior and changes in land cover will help to adjust the management strategies to the available natural resources.

The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of riders at the international levels in eventing, competing with pain, the location of their pain, factors affecting their pain and whether they perceived this pain to have an effect on their performance. 331 questionnaires were completed by international event riders (FEI CCI*, CCI**, CIC***) at the Hartpury International Horse Trials, UK, to establish the prevalence of riders competing with pain. 96% of international event riders competed while experiencing pain, 76% of riders stated that this pain was in the neck, upper back or shoulders. All female riders reported pain, giving a significant correlation between gender and pain (X=-0.479, P=0.006). 55% of riders felt their pain affected their riding performance, giving an odds ratio of 1.14, compared to those riders who felt their pain did not effect their performance. Pain was perceived to influence performance by affecting fatigue, their concentration, and anxiety levels. 96% of riders reporting pain used medication to alleviate their symptoms. This high incidence of international event riders who compete with pain, particularly back pain, could be problematic given the longevity of a rider’s career, which can span over four decades and could potentially increase the risk of a serious or fatal fall in the cross-country phase. This research reports rider’s perceptions and self-reported pain and management options, which may affect the data. Further research is needed to establish the causes of back pain and appropriate management strategies.

Current development of metropolitan area is appearing the trend of multi-center. This thesis analyses the predicament of the disordering center competition that the developments of Wuhan city circle, Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan city groups, Poyang Lake Rim Ecological Economic Zone are facing. Based on the reality that the metropolitan areas are geographically adjacent, culturally similar, sharing the same objective and industry convergent, this paper thinks about the space cooperation of metropolitan areas. Aimed at providing some suggestions for the development of central triangle metropolitan areas, the development assumption of central triangle metropolitan areas construction has been proposed, and corresponding coping measures have been put forward to deal with spatial order, space function, spatial relationship and spatial security.

Microcombustion attracts interest with its promise of energy dense power generation for electronics. Yet, challenges remain to develop this technology further. Thermal management of heat losses is a known hurdle. Simultaneously, non-uniformities in heat release within the reaction regions also affect the device performance. Therefore a combination of thermal management strategies are necessary for further performance enhancements. Here, a bench top platinum nanoparticle based microcombustion reactor, coupled with thermoelectric generators is used. Methanol-air mixtures achieve room temperature ignition within a catalytic cartridge. In the current study, the reactor design is modified to incorporate two traditional thermal management strategies. By limiting enthalpic losses through the exhaust and reactor sides, using multi-pass preheating channels and heat recirculation, expected improvements are achieved. The combined strategies doubled the power output to 1.01 W when compared to the previous design. Furthermore, a preliminary study of catalyst distribution is presented to mitigate non-uniform catalytic activity within the substrate. To do this, tailored distribution of catalyst particles was investigated. This investigation shows a proof-of-concept to achieve localized control, thus management, over heat generation within substrates. By optimizing heat generation, a highly refined combustion-based portable power devices can be envisioned.
