The article examines the controversial procedure of analyzing the learner’s professional needs. Needs analysis is generally regarded as an invaluable tool for constructing a course syllabus. It might be really informative if the target situation analysis and present situation analysis are combined. Speaking about academic writing teaching for Russian non-academic students at the Bachelor Degree level, one should admit that students have no or limited experience of functioning in an academic area in English. Consequently, their responses to the questionnaires as one of the frequently used methods of target situation analysis are merely assumptions; and the answers could not be taken as objective and valid. The author presents a system of analyzing students’ needs within the framework of Academic Writing course: namely, distinguishes the stages that precede or follow teacher-student talks about their expectations, provides more objective practice of examining learners’ needs, and discusses ways of improving question-answer sessions/ interviews. Needs analysis practice that develops learners’ professional needs involves task-based learning, reflexive activities, and teaching to ask good questions. Bringing into life the analogy between customer development theory in management and needs analysis practice in education, it is possible to work out a fruitful strategy. Conducting needs analysis pertains equally to specifying and developing students’ needs in academic communication.

Taking into account the need to clarify the terminological framework of modern pedagogy, the concept pedagogical situation in general and its place in the pedagogical discourse in a cross-cultural aspect is discussed. Today, the concept of situation gains a general methodological significance though lacks a clear definition. Based on the analysis of interdisciplinary research, we concluded that the integral concept of situation includes: presence of subjects, dynamism, external conditions, causal relations, chronotope. The analysis of scientific sources proved that in pedagogical discourse of Russian- and English-speaking authors the term pedagogical situation is used incorrectly, the concept of pedagogical situation is mistaken for other pedagogical categories at the theoretical level, there is no unified approach to its definition. Thus the pedagogical situation analysis in Russian language pedagogical discourse is centred on the formulation of a pedagogical task, and in the English-speaking pedagogical tradition it is based on the triangle diagram that includes a teacher, a student and content. In the conducted cross-cultural and partly interdisciplinary study, a pedagogical situation is conventionally understood as a process of interaction of subjects of pedagogical activity (educational process) with a certain task in a certain place and time.

AbstractThe aim of this study is to develop a descriptive phase model for problem-posing activities based on structured situations. For this purpose, 36 task-based interviews with pre-service primary and secondary mathematics teachers working in pairs who were given two structured problem-posing situations were conducted. Through an inductive-deductive category development, five types of activities (situation analysis, variation, generation, problem-solving, evaluation) were identified. These activities were coded in so-called episodes, allowing time-covering analyses of the observed processes. Recurring transitions between these episodes were observed, through which a descriptive phase model was derived. In addition, coding of the developed episode types was validated for its interrater agreement.

Abstract. The increase in the number of vehicles with the increasing population has caused the problem of parking insufficiency. This problem necessitate situation analysis of existing parking areas and site selection analyses for new parking areas. It is possible to make suitable site selections with spatial analysis supported by Geographic Information System (GIS). In this study, available parking areas in Selçuklu district of Konya province were evaluated and suitable parking areas were determined in line with the needs. The criteria affecting the parking areas site selection were determined and the importance levels of the criteria were detected by using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) which is one of the Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods. Density analyses were carried out with GIS and suitable parking areas map was produced considering the criteria weights obtained.

Abstract Background: Access to quality mental health services in Ghana remains poor, yet little is known about the extent of integrated mental health service provision in districts in Ghana. The purpose of the study was to conduct a situation analysis of integrated mental health service provision in five districts, to inform the development and implementation of tailored district mental healthcare plans in Ghana. Methods: A cross-sectional situation analysis was conducted using a standardised tool to collect secondary routine healthcare data supplemented with interviews with key informants across five purposively selected districts in Ghana. The PRIME (Programme for Improving Mental health care) situation analysis tool was adapted to the Ghanaian context and used for data collection. Results: The districts are predominantly rural; more than eight out of ten people in each selected districts live in rural areas. Mental Neurological and Substance use (MNS) conditions were not routinely reported in the top 10 causes of OPD attendance. Across all districts there are severe challenges with the provision of mental health care, primarily because of the slow enforcement of the mental health Act 2012 (Act 846). There are no mental health care plans, supervision of the few mental health professionals is weak and unstructured, access to regular supply of psychotropic medications is a major challenge, and psychological treatments are extremely limited given the lack of trained clinical psychologists. Data on treatment coverage was unavailable but we estimate this to be <0.5% for depression, schizophrenia, and epilepsy across districts. Nonetheless, opportunities for mental health systems strengthening were noted. These included commitment and willingness of leadership, the existence of a district health information management system, well-established network of community volunteers and some collaboration with traditional and faith-based mental health service providers. Conclusion: The baseline data from this situation analysis confirms the widely reported poor mental health infrastructure across Ghana and other Low and Middle-Income Countries. There are opportunities for strengthening mental health systems through interventions at the organisation/policy level, health facility, and community levels. A standardised situation analysis tool is useful to inform district level mental health care planning in low resource settings in Ghana and potentially other sub-Saharan African countries.
