Background and objectives: ABO blood group distribution defers with racial and geographic variations. They are related with diseases like cardiovascular diseases, cerebral thromboembolism. Prothrombin time may varies among ABO blood group system which may increase the future risk of thrombosis. The present study is to assess prothrombin time among ABO blood groups in healthy adults. Materials and methods: A prospective type of analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Physiology, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka from July 2019 to June 2020. After obtaining ethical clearance, a total 190 healthy adults were selected from different areas of Dhaka city based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, with age ranging from 18-45 years. The subjects were interviewed and detailed history regarding personal, family, medical and drug were taken. Prior to sample collection, informed written consent was taken from the participants. Individuals of blood group A was selected as group A, blood group B as group B, blood group AB as group AB and blood group O as group O. Prothrombin time was measured in the Department of Hematology and BMT Unit, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka. Blood grouping was done in the Department of Physiology, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka.For statistical analysis, One way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni test were considered using SPSS 25.0 version. Results: In this study, blood group B was most common (33.2%). Prothrombin time was lower in blood group A (12.93±0.30 sec), B (12.92±0.61 sec), AB (12.98±0.54 sec) than blood group O (13.08±0.39 sec) which was not statistically significant. Conclusion: It can be concluded that blood group A, B, AB individuals may have more chance of thrombosis due to lower prothrombin time than blood group O individuals.

The authors investigated the relationship between dermatophytosis and ABO blood groups through blood typing, identification of isolated dermatophytes and specific cellular immune response of 40 individuals carriers of this mycosis. They verified that the fungus Trichophyton rubrum, isolated from 54.5% of the patients, was more frequent in individuals belonging to blood group A. The cellular immune response, evaluated through the trichophytin antigen, was positive in 25% of the studied patients; the presence of immediate reactions (30 minutes) was verified in 35%. The blood group distribution among patients with dermatophytosis and control groups was, respectively: 47.5% X 36% in group A, 40% X 50% in group O, 12.5% X 11% in group B. Even though the authors have found a higher number of patients belonging to blood group A infected by T. rubrum, these results suggest that there is no statistical evidence that these individuals are more susceptible to dermatophytosis.

Introduction: Conflicting evidences exist that ABO blood groups correlate with the susceptibility to COVID-19 and its clinical outcomes. This study aimed to pool available articles that assessed a possible relationship between COVID-19 and ABO blood groups. Materials and methods: A search was conducted in four databases comprising Pubmed/Medline, Google scholar, Journal storage (JSTOR) and African Journals Online (AJOL) for relevant studies available before 25th August 2020 and contained extractable data on ABO blood type distribution and COVID-19 disease. Search terms included a combination of “ABO blood group, and COVID-19, coronavirus, and SARS-COV-2”. Results: Fourteen articles that met study inclusion criteria were selected from a total of five hundred and eighty-five articles identified through database search. The fourteen articles reviewed comprised of a total of 73934 subjects (13189 SARS-COV-2 positive cases and 60745 controls). Overall, the risk of SARS-COV-2 infection was found to be significantly increased in patients with blood group A with ORs: 1.24 (95%Cl: 1.09-1.41, P = 0.001). Additionally, blood group O subjects were seen to have decreased odds of contracting COVID-19 infection (OR: 0.78, 95%Cl: 0.68 – 0.89, P=0.0003). No significant association was found between ABO blood groups and COVID -19 severity and mortality. Conclusions: Blood group A was associated with a higher risk of SARS-COV-2 infection whereas risk of infection was lower in blood group O subjects. No statistical significant association was found between ABO blood groups and COVID-19 severity and mortality. The precise role of ABO blood group in COVID-19 susceptibility, severity and mortality requires further research for clarification.

ABO blood groups have been examined in a sample of 400 chicken-pox patients and their 383 unaffected siblings from Hyderabad Andhra Pradesh, India. Subjects of blood group A (and possibly AB) would appear to have a somewhat higher risk than persons with group B and O to develop chicken pox.

The clinical outcome of falciparum malaria in endemic areas is influenced by erythrocyte polymorphisms including the ABO blood groups. Studies have reported association of ABO blood group to resistance, susceptibility, and severity ofP. falciparummalaria infection. Individuals with blood group “A” have been found to be highly susceptible to falciparum malaria whereas blood group “O” is said to confer protection against complicated cases. We analyzed samples from 293 young children less than six years old with malaria in the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana. It was observed that group O was present in about 16.1% of complicated cases weighed against 40.9% of uncomplicated controls. Individuals with complicated malaria were about twice likely to be of blood groups A and B compared to group O (A versus O, OR = 1.90, 95% CI = 1.59–2.26,P<0.0001; B versus O, OR = 1.82. 95% CI = 1.57–2.23,P<0.0001). Blood group O participants with complicated diseases had low parasitaemia compared to the other blood groups (P<0.0001). This may give blood group O individuals a survival advantage over the other groups in complicated malaria as suggested. Participants with complicated falciparum malaria were generally anaemic and younger than those with uncomplicated disease.

BACKGROUND The association between antigens A and B and cardiovascular disease is still unclear. Several reports have suggested an important involvement of the ABO blood group system in the susceptibility to thrombosis. Assessing that non-O blood groups in particular A blood group confer a higher risk of venous and arterial thrombosis than group O. Epidemiologic data are typically not available for all racial and ethnics groups. The purpose of this observational study was to identify a probable link between ABO blood group and ischemic and non-ischemic disease in subjects from the province of Casablanca, Morocco and to analyze whether A blood group individuals were at higher risk of ischemic disease or not. METHOD An observational study had been conducted from the beginning of 2017 until the end of 2019 in the Department of Cardiology, University Hospital Centre, Ibn Rochd, Casablanca, Morocco. We recruited consecutive subjects (549 men and 544 woman) at our center between 2017 and 2019. We studied data on age, gender, past history of hypertension, diabetes, smoking, sedentarism, obesity, hyperlipidemia, use of estrogen-progestin contraceptives and blood group distribution. Their ABO blood groups were determined using standard agglutination techniques. In each blood group type, we evaluated the prevalence of ischemic and non-ischemic cardiovascular disease. RESULT Of the 1093 patients whose medical records were reviewed, 482 (44.1%) were carrying blood group A. Of the remaining 611 patients, 353 (32.3%) had blood group O, 212 (19.4%) blood group B, and 46 (4.3%) blood group AB. The diagnosis of ischemic disease (ID) was higher in patients with blood group O (63.3%) than in other blood groups, and the diagnosis of valvular disease was higher in patients with blood group A (48.7%) compared to other groups. In patients with blood group B or AB compared to non-B or non-AB, respectively there was no statistically significant difference in ID incidence. The incidence of ID in men was significantly higher in blood group O (63.2%, p = 0.015) compared with women, while there valvular disease was a statistically higher in women (54.5%, p = 0.035). This difference remains statistically significant after adjustment for common cardiovascular risk factors. CONCLUSION Our study suggests an association between ABO blood group and Ischemic disease and non-ischemic disease in Moroccan population. In African countries, where most of health facilities are understaffed, more rigorous studies with a larger population are needed to give high level of evidence to confirm this association in order to establish the need to be more aggressive in risk factor control in these individuals.

Introduction Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the ongoing pandemic with multitude of manifestations and association of ABO blood group in South-East Asian population needs to be explored. Methods It was a retrospective study of patients with COVID-19. Blood group A, B, O, and AB were identified in every participant, irrespective of their RH type and allotted groups 1, 2,3, and 4, respectively. Correlation between blood group and lab parameters was presented as histogram distributed among the four groups. Multivariate regression and logistic regression were used for inferential statistics. Results The cohort included 1067 patients: 521 (48.8%) participants had blood group O as the prevalent blood type. Overall, 10.6% COVID-19-related mortality was observed at our center. Mortality was 13.9% in blood group A, 9.5% in group B, 10% in group C, and 10.2% in AB blood group (p = 0.412). IL-6 was elevated in blood group A (median [IQR]: 23.6 [17.5,43.8]), Procalcitonin in blood group B (median [IQR]: 0.54 [0.3,0.7]), D-dimers and CRP in group AB (median [IQR]: 21.5 [9,34]; 24 [9,49], respectively). Regarding severity of COVID-19 disease, no statistical difference was seen between the blood groups. Alteration of the acute phase reactants was not positively associated with any specific blood type. Conclusion In conclusion, this investigation did not show significant association of blood groups with severity and of COVID-19 disease and COVID-19-associated mortality.

BACKGROUND: Inherited ABO blood group has been shown to play an important role in the pathogenesis of various gynecological cancers including endometrial carcinoma (EC). OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to determine the prevalence of ABO blood groups in Iranian patients with EC and to investigate the relationship between the blood group and several clinicopathologic parameters in Imam Hossein Hospital. METHODS: One hundred and seventy-five EC patients were selected and analyzed for their clinicopathologic details including ABO blood group, age, menopausal status, body mass index (BMI), tumor grade, and stage of the International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FIGO). RESULTS: Endometrioid carcinoma was the most common histological type in this case study. Early stages (I and II) were present in 135 individuals (77.1%) and advanced stages (III and IV) appeared in 40 (22.9%) patients. Blood group A was prominent in patients with EC. There was a significant relationship between blood group A and cancer grade (P= 0.024). 23.1% of group A had grade III EC, while this grade appeared in 35.2% of the non-A blood group. There was no significant association between ABO blood groups and other EC clinic-pathological results (P> 0.05). CONCLUSION: Although there was no significant relationship between the ABO blood group and the patients’ clinicopathological characteristics, more studies could provide extensive information about any possible relation between the blood group, especially blood group A, EC, and the grade of the tumor.

Abstract Background ABO blood group types are among the risk factors of COVID-19 infection in many recent studies. Thus, the objective of this study is to find the relations between ABO types and COVID-19 infection as well as to find out the riskier group that is associated with hospitalization and the need for O2 support. Methods This observational cross-sectional study was done to identify the risk and relations between ABO blood groups and Rh factor of 530 Iraqi-Kurdish patients affected with COVID-19 infection. Among them, 184 patients were severe cases that needed hospitalization while 346 patients were mild to moderate cases that were treated at home. The diagnosis of COVID-19 infection was based on Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test, high-resolution Chest CT scan, strong clinical suspicion plus history of the close home or job contact with COVID-19 confirmed patient. Results There were no significant differences in the distribution of ABO blood grouping in the total COVID-19 cases, however, the severity in form of hospitalization and O2 demand was higher in blood group A whereas the lowest in group B. Male patient were significantly older than females with more prolonged illness duration. The duration of COVID-19 illness, the need for plasma, and the rate of mortality were very significantly higher among hospitalized COVID-19 patients than non-hospitalized. In 37.2% of the patient, the initial presentation was a combination of more than one symptom. In 28% of cases, myalgia was the 1st mono-symptomatic presentation. Conclusions Blood group A is associated with the highest rate of hospitalization and O2 demand, besides, the duration of illness and rate of mortality in males were more than females.

Studies have associated ABO blood groups with cardiovascular risk events in the general population and no significant association has yet been reported in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. This study uses the atherogenic indices to evaluate the potential cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk of ABO blood groups in SCD patients. Lipoprotein concentrations were assayed in 200 SCD patients and 100 control subjects with normal haemoglobin using the enzymatic colorimetric method. The atherogenic indices were calculated and compared among the various blood groups to show which of the blood group has elevated atherogenic risk of CVD. The means total cholesterol, triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were highest in blood group A and lowest in blood group O while high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level was lowest in blood group A and highest in blood group O. All the atherogenic indices were highest in blood group A and lowest in blood group O. The mean levels of lipoprotein variables and atherogenic indices were not significantly different between the blood group B and AB. Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), cardiac risk ratio (CRR) and atherogenic coefficient (AC) correlated positively (r=0.348,p=0.005; r=0.236, p=0.05; r=0.238,p=0.05) respectively with blood group A. Similarly AIP, CRR and AC correlated positively (r=0.316, p=0.05; r=0.311, p=0.05; r=0.310, p=0.05) with blood group B. On the other hand, AIP and AC failed to correlate with blood group AB but CRR correlated (r=0.321, p=0.05) with blood group AB. All the atherogenic indices did not correlate significantly with blood group O. Atherogenic indices were higher in non-O blood groups than blood group O. Patients with non-O blood groups may require detail evaluations and closer monitoring than those with blood group O with respect to CVD risk.

Abstract Background A few people infected by the coronavirus become seriously ill, while others show little to no signs of the symptoms, or are asymptomatic. Recent researches are pointing to the fact that the ABO blood group might play an important role in a person’s susceptibility and severity of COVID-19 infection. Aim of the study: try to understand the relationship between ABO groups and COVID-19 (susceptibility and severity). Results A total of (507) patients were included in this study. The study population was divided based on the ABO blood group into types A+, A−, B+, AB, O+, and O−. Blood group A was associated with high susceptibility of infection: group A, 381 (75.1%); and less common in group O, 97 (19.2%), group B, 18 (3.5%), and group AB, 11 (2.2%). The severity of COVID-19 infection was common in non-blood group O where (20 (7.1%), 4 (26.7%), 2 (11%), and 1 (9%) in type A+, A−, B+, and AB, respectively), while in type O 3.1%. And mechanically ventilated patients were 22 (5.9%), 2 (13.4%), 2 (11.1%), and 1 (1%). Mortality was high in blood groups A and B, 16 (4.37%) and 1 (5.5%), respectively, while in blood group O, it was 1%. Conclusion The incidence, severity, and mortality of COVID-19 were common in non-blood group O. While blood group O was protected against COVID-19.
