The rapid growth in technology have affected processes in various domains such as business, healthcare, agriculture and education. Computer related applications used in these domains are available so easily, that it is impossible to imagine a situation without them. Technologies that were available but hardly commonly used a few decades ago such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) have now become technologies that are fast gaining interests in most fields including service related1 fields such as healthcare and education. The basic idea of AR is to superimpose sense enhancements over a real-world environment. It is a perfect solution for learners with learning difficulties as it combines the advantages of multi senses of the learners, helps them to understand learning better when the integration of both virtuality and reality is embedded in their learning applications. AR is mostly effectively used when computer generated visual enhancements are integrated into real life applications. Thus, this paper highlights the evaluation of the visual-based AR learning application to investigate its plausible assistive functions that can help dyscalculia learners learn Mathematics in a more meaningful way. Findings of the study showed that the students who had difficulties on memory, abstraction, sequencing processing, motor and visual perception, found the visual-based Augmented Reality (AR)  technology embedded in an application, a positive assistive learning application that can help dyscalculia learners learn mathematics more effectively.

Augmented reality (AR) refers to the layering of visual information onto a live picture of your physical surroundings, enhancing the real-world environment in real-time. Both Snapchat and Instagram filters are current examples of augmented reality. Since this technology has shown its ability to catch users, more and more brands are using it to engage current and potential customers. In an environment where almost everyone has a Smartphone, augmented reality seems like an obvious next step since there is no need for the additional hardware. It is generally quite straightforward for people to use, and has a great capacity to enhance the effects of marketing.

Augmented reality is fundamentally different from virtual reality: it does not map a real world environment into a digital one as a virtual experience. Instead, it locates both reality and virtual within the same experiential frame. Through it, our interactions with reality are mediated via the fantasy of an augmented experience. Thus, augmented reality supplements what we see with the purpose of trying to maintain our attention. What is most fascinating about augmented reality is how reality itself becomes a part of, rather than distinct from, digital information. It is in this sense that the very notion of seeing is fundamentally challenged. Since when augmented technology is not deployed, what is left is an apparent incompleteness of simply looking. But what are the consequences of confronting this incompleteness? In this article I examine how augmented reality simply renders a structure that has always sustained the visual field. Training can be expensive, dangerous, or impractical for certain situations. Virtual reality (VR) technology could be utilized to reduce the negative aspects of real-life training and the consequences incurred from inadequate training. However, for VR to be an effective training method, it must reflect reality to a certain extent. We measured task performance and situation awareness for parking situations with 15 participants in a real-world environment, and in a virtual environment using a VR headset and a flat screen computer monitor separately. Results revealed no significant difference in driver situation awareness between the reality, VR, and flat screen conditions. Performance in terms of task time was significantly less with the reality condition compared to the others. Therefore, the VR device was not equivalent to the real-world environment for training purposes. We discuss ways in which improvements to the VR training condition may increase the effectiveness of VR-based training.

Color appearance models have been extensively studied for characterizing and predicting the perceived color appearance of physical color stimuli under different viewing conditions. These stimuli are either surface colors reflecting illumination or self-luminous emitting radiations. With the rapid development of augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR), it is critically important to understand how the color appearance of the objects that are produced by AR and MR are perceived, especially when these objects are overlaid on the real world. In this study, nine lighting conditions, with different correlated color temperature (CCT) levels and light levels, were created in a real-world environment. Under each lighting condition, human observers adjusted the color appearance of a virtual stimulus, which was overlaid on a real-world luminous environment, until it appeared the whitest. It was found that the CCT and light level of the real-world environment significantly affected the color appearance of the white stimulus, especially when the light level was high. Moreover, a lower degree of chromatic adaptation was found for viewing the virtual stimulus that was overlaid on the real world.

Thus far, it has only been used for suppressing two-dimensional images presented on-screen. We present a novel variant of CFS, termed ‘real-life CFS’, with which the actual immediate surroundings of an observer – including three-dimensional, real life objects – can be rendered unconscious. Real-life CFS uses augmented reality goggles to present subjects with CFS masks to their dominant eye, leaving their non-dominant eye exposed to the real world. In three experiments we demonstrate that real objects can indeed be suppressed from awareness using real-life CFS, and that duration suppression is comparable that obtained using the classic, on-screen CFS. We further provide an example for an experimental code, which can be modified for future studies using ‘real-life CFS’. This opens the gate for new questions in the study of consciousness and its functions.

Technological advances have had an impact on many industries as well as the tourism industry. Augmented reality applications, one of the emerging new technologies in recent years, have also started to be used in our daily lives. Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that allows its users to see the real world together with an additional virtual world that is added in real time to the same field of view. The augmented reality applications contribute to the enrichment of tourists' tourism experiences, especially during their visit and result in augmented satisfaction levels. Furthermore, it is one of the effective tools that can be used against the wear and tear of cultural heritage sites caused by overcrowding. In this chapter, the application fields of the augmented reality in the field of tourism have been discussed under the subtitles. As a result of our study, recommendations for the development of AR applications both for the literature and real-life application have been presented.

Augmented reality (AR) offers an interactive experience of the real-world environment when an object of the real-world is augmented by computer-generated perceptual information and relevant artefacts. This is a conceptual chapter based on the review of available literature. Also, resources on the internet have also been accessed and reviewed. On the context of the Diffusion of Innovation theory, this research aims to outline AR guiding for in an airport used for tourist aviation. Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the national flag carrier of the country, is the example where this study also explains the possible challenges and benefits that AR guiding facilities can possibly have. This research outlines two specific areas of management and marketing issues are analysis on the way to implement such guiding. Findings show that from the understanding of the Diffusion of Innovation, AR guiding in these days is adopted by an ‘Early Majority' who are followers and engages in reading those reviews given by the previous adopters of new services or products.

With the increasing aging population, the number of people suffering from dementia continues to grow at a high rate. Emerging technologies have been applied to support the independence of patients with dementia. Among these technologies, augmented reality (AR) technology augments computer-generated virtual content on the real-world environment. There is an increasing interest in the use of AR tools and applications for dementia care as these tools and applications are capable of providing intuitive interaction and reducing the workload of caregivers. This chapter presents a state-of-the-art overview of AR-assisted applications for dementia care. An AR-assisted healthcare exercising system that enhances the user’s motor skills and cognition capability is presented to illustrate the use of AR in dementia care. Furthermore, an outlook of the future of AR-assisted dementia care applications is presented.

Purpose. The study attempts to define virtual reality in tourism as well as to characterise and present chosen applications created for the purposes of virtual sightseeing. Based on the survey conducted among tourism and recreation students of the Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education in Katowice, the study attempts to answer the provocative question: “can virtual tourism replace real-world travel?”, and to analyse participants’ opinions on the topic of virtual trips. Methods. Analysis of scientific studies as well as information and data on the possibility of using immersive virtual reality in human life with particular consideration given to tourism. An overview of applications enabling taking trips through immersive exploration of virtual environments. The survey was conducted among AWF students. Participants expressed their opinions about virtual sightseeing. Findings. Virtual reality is increasingly used in various fields of human life. It is entering the world of tourism, in which it is used to create presentations of hotels and resorts, and to promote towns and tourist facilities. Appropriate software and IT equipment allow to take deliberate, planned and very realistic virtual trips. The authors of the work defined such tourism as all activities carried out by persons who immerse themselves in virtual reality for learning and entertainment purposes in order to experience the illusion of change of their everyday, real surroundings in time and space. Tourism understood in such a way allows us not only to go to almost any place without the necessity of leaving home. It also allows for visiting areas and objects which cannot be explored in real life. It enables a visitor, among others, to travel in space and visit historical sites which no longer exist in their original form, but have been recreated in computer applications. Virtual tourism also allows for exploring fictional locations created by designers of photorealistic graphics as well as valuable and sensitive monuments, and taking trips to places which are dangerous or prohibited. In the conducted survey, it has been concluded that even though tourism and recreation students found experience with virtual reality to be positive, the majority is not convinced that this form of tourism can replace real-world travel. Research and conclusions limitations. There are only a few publications concerning immersive virtual reality travel experience. Access to the software was quite early. Practical implications. Understanding and reorganisation of issues related to immersive virtual reality travel experience. The study may constitute an original introduction and encouragement to carry out qualitative and quantitative research on newly created virtual tourism. Originality.
