This article combines two very interesting fields of research: the one concerning issues of health and well-being in ‘post-secular’ religious practices, the other one striving towards a wider recognition and comprehension of the aural or acoustic side of religions and religious practice, respectively. Due to their favourable qualities, singing and chanting are increasingly implemented in therapeutic programmes. The Singing Hospitals is an international network of medical professionals, music therapists, musicologists, neurobiologists and related groups or initiatives. They aim to promote the beneficial effects of singing for health and healing in healthcare settings on an international level. The potential to experience transcendence and to be affirmed in one’s own spirituality as it is ascribed to chanting accords with its beneficial effects on human health. In post-secular societies the human body, mind and psyche are increasingly understood as being interwoven with the world and the cosmos and with other human, non-human and also divine beings.

“We reveal from the Qur’an that which is healing and a mercy for the believers” Qur’an 17:82 This statement is a statement of fact, declared in the Qur’an and confirmedby the sayings and practices of Prophet Muhammad, (SAAS) The healing effectof the Qur’an is not limited to the ills of the society and the world. Itextends to the human being and contributes to his physical and mental healthand well-being. This question is: How does the Qur’an heal? and how doesit promote health and well-being?The Qur’an achieves its healing and health promoting effect by utilizingthree different approaches: the legal approach, the guiding approach, and thedirect healing approach. The legal approach is through the provision of legislationprohibiting matters which are hazardous to health and enjoining matterswhich promote health. This legislation has a direct impact on the health ofthe individual. The guiding approach is through the provision of general rulesand regulations which guide the individual in the conduct of his or her dailyaffairs. This guidance has an indirect positive effect on the health and wellbeingof the individual. The third approach is through the direct healing effectof the Qur’an on the various organs of the human body. The first two approaches, the legislation and guidance have been very muchknown and well understood for years, although some new discoveries haveadded an exciting twist in our understanding in these areas. The third approach, however, or the direct healing effect of the Qur‘an on the organs ofthe human body is a completely new field of discovery where many new excitingfacts are just beginning to emerge and come closer to the level of ourunderstanding. Let us review these three approaches in some detail:I Legislation:A few examples of health promoting legislation will be given just to make ...

Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a widespread condition, representing a challenging disease to manage. Exercise is being increasingly recommended as part of the therapeutic regimen for DM but the management of different forms of physical activity is difficult for individuals with diabetes, trainers, and physicians. Regular exercise can improve health and well-being, helping individuals to achieve their target lipid profile, body composition, cardio-respiratory fitness, and glycemic goals. People with diabetes tend to be as inactive as the general population, with a large percentage of individuals not achieving the minimum amount of recommended physical activity levels. Indeed, several barriers to exercise exist for persons with diabetes, including sports eligibility, multi-modality management of diabetic athletes, and inadequate knowledge about adequate type and intensity of exercise. The aim of the present review is to provide the current understanding of mechanisms, recommendations, and beneficial effects of different modalities of exercise for the treatment of DM.

This chapter addresses why people engage in creativity. This question can be answered at different levels. On the one hand, one can refer to what motivates creative people to do what they do. On the other hand, the question addresses a deeper level, that of how societies today are built and how they, in turn, construct the meaning and value of creativity. Nowadays, people consider creativity intrinsically valuable largely because of its direct and indirect economic benefits. However, creative expression also has a role for health and well-being. Creativity also relates to meaning in life. The chapter then considers how creativity can be used for good or for evil.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, governments around the world closed all the educational institutions to control the spread of disease, which is creating a direct impact on students, educators, and institutions. The purpose of this study was to analyze the perception of academic stress experienced by students during current online education and coping strategies using emotional intelligence adopted by them. The study aims to conduct a timely assessment of the effects of stress due to COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of college students. The authors conducted interview surveys with 227 students at a private university in India to understand the effects of online education during pandemic on their mental health and well-being. The data were analyzed through quantitative and qualitative methods. Of the 227 students, 71% indicated anxiety and stress due to ongoing pandemic.

This chapter focuses specifically upon the use of musical improvisation for health and well-being. It considers the fundamental features of improvisation and links them to possible improvements in health and well-being. A model showing the different types of communication processes involved is also presented. Improvisation has long been associated with the potential to bring about improvement in health. It is a key process used by music therapists and early texts outlining music therapy practice contained numerous examples of improvisational activities. This chapter draws these processes and potential outcomes together and explains four characteristics of musical improvisation identified as underpinning the health benefits: improvisation links conscious with unconscious processes; improvisation makes unique demands on cognition; improvisation facilitates creative interaction; and, improvisation enables the non-verbal expression of thoughts and feelings that may otherwise be difficult to express. When improvisation is viewed as a sophisticated form of social interaction, links to other non-musical contexts and the implications for health and well-being are clear.

Father’s involvement in his family typically has beneficial effects on maternal health during pregnancy and on his child’s health and well-being. The strength and pattern of these effects vary, however, and most studies consider only a few factors that contribute to father involvement. In this study, we describe development and pilot testing of the Father Resources Survey Instrument, which consists of twenty-nine questions measuring eleven dimensions and designed to assess psychological, social, and work-related resources associated with father’s involvement in his family. The final pilot test indicates that the Father Resources Instrument may help to understand a father’s involvement in his female partner’s pregnancy and the health and well-being of his child.

Magnesium is an essential mineral necessary for optimal cellular health and well-being. Many adults in the United States fail to get recommended amounts of magnesium from their diets. Even so, symptoms of magnesium deficiency are rarely seen; however, maintaining normal body stores could be preventative against common diseases.

Recent scientific literature has published about the Isolating Gender Violence (IGV), the violence exerted by harassers against those who support their victims. IGV provokes suffering to advocates with health and well-being consequences that have been analyzed by more recent research; but IGV provokes also suffering on the victims of gender violence when they see the suffering of those who have supported them and also for their isolation. Thus, the aim of the present study is to explore the health and well-being consequences of IGV on gender violence survivors. The methodology includes three narratives of gender violence survivors whose advocates supporting them were victimized by IGV. The results show, on the one hand, an increase of the health and well-being effects of gender violence already analyzed by scientific literature; on the other hand, new health and well-being effects appear. All survivors interviewed say that, besides those new consequences for their health, the support of those advocates has decreased the global health effects of the total gender violence they suffered.
