Purpose The management of organisational knowledge and the promotion of staff knowledge sharing are largely neglected in higher education institutions. The purpose of this study is to examine how enterprise social networks can enable staff knowledge sharing in communities of practice in that context. Design/methodology/approach The study is framed as an Action Research project, covering three cycles over a 12-month period. During the Diagnosing phase, a conceptual model was developed for empirical testing. Data were collected through 30 semi-structured interviews and a number of focus groups. This was supplemented by content analysis and reflective journaling. Findings The findings support the conceptual model and provide insight into the antecedents necessary for the creation of an enterprise social network-enabled knowledge-sharing environment, the motivators for and barriers to participation, and the perceived organisational and individual benefits of increased staff knowledge-sharing activity. Research limitations/implications As the study has a higher education focus, all of the findings may not be generalizable to other types of organisation. Further development of the conceptual model and testing in other contextual settings will yield greater generalizability. Practical implications A number of findings have practical implications for the management of higher education institutions, such as the evidence of a divide between faculty and other staff. In general, the study findings provide an opportunity for educationalists to better understand the scope and impact of employing social media platforms for knowledge sharing. Originality/value This paper adds to the growing body of work on organisational implementations of social media, and should be of interest to practitioners and researchers undertaking similar projects.

Resource optimization is a key concern for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Cloud Computing, as the recent generation in computing technology of the fourth industrial revolution, has emerged as the main standard of service and resource delivery. As cloud computing has grown into a mature technology and is being rapidly adopted in many HEIs across the world, retaining customers of this innovative technology has become a challenge to the cloud service providers. Current research trends on cloud computing have sought to study the acceptance or adoption of technology; however, little research has been devoted to the continuance use in an organizational setting. To address this gap, this study aims to investigate the antecedents of cloud computing continuance use in HEIs. Hence, drawing on the prior literature in organizational-level continuance, this research established a conceptual model that extends and contextualizes the IS continuance model through the lens of the TOE framework (i.e., technological, organizational, and environmental influences). The results of a pilot study, conducted through a survey with information and communications technology (ICT) decision makers, and based on the proposed conceptual model, indicate that the instrument is both reliable and valid, and so point the way towards further research. The paper closes with a discussion of the research limitations, contribution, and future directions.

The findings indicate that the barriers to participation are influenced by the prevalent organisation structure and culture, and a divide between faculty and other staff. However, individual benefits that accrue from participation may influence greater participation, and organisational benefits that accrue may influence organisational strategies that drive change in structure and culture to promote the development of the knowledge sharing environment. A number of findings have practical implications for the management of higher education institutions, such as the evidence of a divide between faculty and other staff, and the perceived existence of an organisational culture that inhibits staff communication, interaction and collaboration. In general, the study findings provide an opportunity for educationalists to better understand the scope and impact of employing social media platforms for knowledge sharing. This study adds to the growing body of work on organisational implementations of social media, and should be of interest to practitioners and researchers undertaking similar projects.

The purpose of the article is to verify the Pareto principle in terms of revenues to the special fund of higher education institutions of Ukraine based on the results of scientific and scientific-technical work on international cooperation projects, scientific and scientific-technical work under economic agreements and scientific services. With the help of ABC-analysis of indicators of income from scientific activity, domestic higher education institutions are divided into three groups: A – higher education institutions with a large amount of income from scientific activities; B – higher education institutions with an average level of commercialization of scientific activity; C – higher education institutions with little or no income from research. It was obtained that group A included 29 (19,595 %) higher education institutions of Ukraine, which in 2016–2018 provided paid scientific services in the amount of UAH 739,747 million (79,39 % of the total). Group B was formed by 34 (22,973 %) domestic higher education institutions, whose scientific activity in the analyzed period brought income in the amount of UAH 147,954 million (15,88 % of the total). Group C included 85 (57,432 %) Ukrainian higher education institutions, which earned UAH 44,082 million (4,73 % of the total) as a result of their scientific work. It was found that the Pareto principle 20/80 was reflected in the activities of higher education institutions in Ukraine. Strategies for commercialization of research results for domestic higher education institutions from each group are proposed: group A – leader’s strategy; group B – the applicant’s strategy; group C – strategy of the beginner.

The article deals with the relevance of the formation of educational institutions buildings in cooperation with higher education institutions. On the basis of modern tendencies of the education development the basic typological groups of the educational organisations are revealed which are basic elements in the general system of the higher education. The necessity of architectural formation of the school as the main component in the system of school-University interaction is determined. On the basis of the conducted researches are revealed the main directions and methods of architectural formation of buildings of the General educational organisations, namely schools in the structure of higher educational institutions (universities). The basic architectural and planning principles of designing school buildings in the structure of university complexes are defined. The conceptual model of architectural formation of a school building in the conditions of education continuity is developed: general-higher, on the example of Don State Technical University.

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) play a crucial role in societies as they enhance the sustainable development of nations. In a context of increasing competition and financial difficulties in higher education institutions, the loyalty of students, faculty and administration staff as well as institutional reputation are key factors for survival and success. They are built upon trust and high quality of services rendered by HEIs. The intentional development of trust serves the purpose of enhancing the quality culture in higher education. The concept of quality culture has become a natural successor of quality management and quality assurance in universities presenting a new perspective for viewing quality at HEIs—as a combination of structural and managerial with cultural and psychological components. This paper provides an elaboration of a novel Trust-Based Quality Culture Conceptual Model for Higher Education Institutions which presents the perceived interconnections between trust and quality culture at HEIs. It can form a source for an inquiry process at HEIs, thus contributing to better contextual diagnosis of the stage where HEI is in the process of building the quality culture based on trust. The findings of this study are important in better understanding the quality culture development in HEIs that is based on trust, loyalty and reputation. It may have an impact on the decision-making processes concerning HEIs’ management. The proposed model contributes to the need for greater clarity, ordering and systematization of the role of trust in the processes of quality culture development.

Introduction: In this paper, the authors aim is to develop a conceptual model that aims to facilitate the processes of implementing sustainability and / or assessment of sustainable performance in a Higher Education Building (HEB). The conceptual model could also be used to compare two or more buildings of higher education in terms of sustainability. Methodology: The authors started the scientific research with the literature review in order to identify and analyze the most relevant aspects that are frequently assess and could influencing the components of sustainability in higher education institutions. These aspects were clustered into categories and for each of them were established objectives and key performance indicators. Results: The main results obtained were presented synthetically in graphical, tabular and mathematical manner. This way of presentation was preferred by the authors for defining and developing the proposed conceptual model. Conclusions: Finally, the authors propose a piloting of the conceptual model in order to validate it, because until now, no testing in physical circumstances of the model has been implemented, it based only on the results identified in the literature review.
