The study was aimed at investigating the effect of traffic load on the accumulation of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) by moss gametophytes (Brachythecium rutabulum and Pylaisia polyantha) and aquatic macrophyte Lemna minor in the territory of the city of Lviv (Ukraine). In the course of the study, five sites were selected: site 1 in the territory of the Stryiskyi Park, which was used as a control one, and sites 2–5, in which the traffic intensity was analyzed and plant samples were collected. Sites 2 and 3 were selected in the middle and end parts of Stryiska Street, respectively, site 4 was located near the junction of Lychakivska and Pasichna streets, and site 5 was chosen in the immediate vicinity of Khortytska Street. Gametophytes of mosses B. rutabulum and P. polyantha were collected at sites 1–4 and analyzed for metals content; two ponds were selected at sites 2 and 5, respectively, and metal concentrations were analyzed in water and in the samples of L. minor. Me­tal concentrations were determined using a Selmi C-115PK atomic absorption spectrometer. According to observations, the daily traffic intensity at sites 2–4 was high; at the same time, site 5 was characterized by low traffic intensity. It was found that at sites 2–4 with heavy vehicular traffic, the accumulation levels of Mn, Pb, and Zn in gametophytes of both species of mosses and Cu in gametophyte of B. rutabulum were significantly higher compared to the control site in Stryiskyi Park. Significantly higher concentrations of Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn were found in the water of the pond located at site 2 with a high level of transport load (the middle part of Stryiska Street) compared to the pond at site 5, where the level of transport load was negligible; samples of L. minor from this reservoir were characterized by a higher content of Cr, Fe, and Zn compared to the pond at site 5. Investigating the accumulation of metals in L. minor, the highest values of bioaccumulation factors were found for Mn, Fe, and Zn. The obtained results show the bioindication potential of the plants Brachythecium rutabulum, Pylaisia polyantha and Lemna minor, and suggest that these species can be used to assess environmental pollution by heavy metals in the urban ecosystem of Lviv and in other areas with high traffic density.

Experiments on the real possibility of employing microorganisms to capture inorganic polluting substances, mainly heavy metals from urban and industrial wastes, are running using bacteria biomass. Many strains of Arthrobacter spp., gram-negative bacteria, diffused in the soil also inacondition of environmental stresses, have been proved to be particulary effective in heavy metal capture (Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn). The active and passive processes in accumulation of metals by bacteria were studied. Our experiments have been done on fluid biomass and on a membrane both for practical use and for an easy recovery.

Runoff from highways contains significant loads of heavy metals and hydrocarbons. According to German regulations, it should be infiltrated over embankments to support groundwater-recharge. To investigate the decontaminating effect of greened embankments, soil-monoliths from highways with high traffic densities were taken. Soils were analyzed to characterize the contamination in relation to distance and depth for lead, zinc, copper, cadmium, PAH and MOTH. Lysimeters were charged in the field and laboratory with highway runoff to study the effluents under defined conditions. Concentrations of pollutants in roadside soils depend on the age of embankments and traffic density. Highest concentrations were found in the upper 5 cm of the soil and within a distance of up to two metres from the street. Concentrations of most pollutants decreased rapidly with depth and distance. Lead and cadmium could not be detected in lysimeter effluent. Zinc and copper were found in concentrations that did not exceed drinking water quality limits.

With the steadily growing of global transportation market, the traffic load has increased dramatically over the past decades, which may develop into a risk source for existing bridges. The simultaneous presence of heavy trucks that are random in nature governs the serviceability limit for large bridges. This study investigated probabilistic traffic load effects on large bridges under actual heavy traffic load. Initially, critical stochastic traffic loading scenarios were simulated based on millions of traffic monitoring data in a highway bridge in China. A methodology of extrapolating maximum traffic load effects was presented based on the level-crossing theory. The effectiveness of the proposed method was demonstrated by probabilistic deflection investigation of a suspension bridge. Influence of traffic density variation and overloading control on the maximum deflection was investigated as recommendations for designers and managers. The numerical results show that the congested traffic mostly governs the critical traffic load effects on large bridges. Traffic growth results in higher maximum deformations and probabilities of failure of the bridge in its lifetime. Since the critical loading scenario contains multi-types of overloaded trucks, an effective overloading control measure has a remarkable influence on the lifetime maximum deflection. The stochastic traffic model and corresponding computational framework is expected to be developed to more types of bridges.

An annual monitoring campaign of VOCs, consisting of twelve sampling periods, was carried out from June 2008 to June 2009 in Modugno, a city located in the Apulia region (Southern Italy), in order to assess the urban air quality, identify the main emission sources, and quantify the cancer and no-cancer risk attributable to inhalation exposures. Monitoring, carried out by using the Radiello diffusive samplers, was conducted in eleven sampling sites throughout the city taking into account the traffic density and the architecture of the city. From the study of the data, it was found that, among all considered VOCs, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) are the pollutants at higher concentration. The analysis of VOC concentrations, the study of the topography of the city, and the use of different diagnostic ratios between the BTEX species showed that the vehicular traffic emissions were the predominant source of VOCs in the urban area of Modugno. Despite that the annual concentration of benzene is lower than the regulatory limit, the estimation of cancer risk showed that the global lifetime cancer risk attributed to the investigated VOC exposure was not negligible and therefore should be taken into account in future regulatory approaches.

In this study, the effects of slope and traffic intensity on soil compaction, rutting and forest floor removal was evaluated on a skid trail in the natural forest of north of Iran. Combination of two levels of slope &lt; 20% (SC1) and &gt; 20% (SC2) and three levels of traffic (one, five and nine traffics) were studied. Treatment plots, with three replications, were established on the skid trail prior to skidding. The results of this study showed that all bulk densities were considerably higher in SC2 than in SC1 and average soil bulk densities were measured from 1.07 (g∙cm<sup>&ndash;3</sup>) to 1.23 (g∙cm<sup>&ndash;3</sup>) on skid trail and 0.91 (g∙cm<sup>&ndash;3</sup>) in undisturbed areas. With the increment of traffic, soil compaction increased but there was no significant difference among the three levels of traffic frequency in SC1 whereas it was significant between one and five cycles in SC2. Greatest rut depth was measured as 12 cm at nine traffics in SC2, although increase of traffic density caused deeper rut depth at all slope treatments, but it was higher at the SC2 in comparison to SC1. Litter mass decreased considerably on the skid trail with the increasing in slope and traffic. No important difference has been detected between SC1 and SC2 in terms of Litter mass removal. These results provide clear evidence that soil disturbance on steep trail is intensified.

The purpose of this paper is to study the speciation and contents of two types of heavy metals (Cd and Hg) in the sediments in Power Bridge (D1) and Nanshui Bridge (N2) in the middle part of the Ancient Canal in Zhenjiang. The relationship between the speciation of these heavy metals and their environmental factors were described. Morerover, the ecological hazard and trace to the source of these two types of heavy metals was also determined preliminarily. The results showed that (1) the main heavy metal contamination in the sediments of Power Bridge and Nanshui Bridge is Cd, and the average value is 20 mg/Kg, 17 mg/Kg, respectively, which were higher than environmental background value;(2) The peak value of Hg and Cd were near equilibrium in the 0.1-0.2m depth of Sediments; (3) Calculate the individual potential ecological risk index in the sediments of heavy metal element of two sample points both quantity of contents are Cd>Hg. And visible ecological threat of heavy metals were from Cd. After removing the Cd value, the RI value showed that ecological harm index basically below mild ecological harm degree.
