Advertising can be defined as an openly sponsored offering of goods, services, or ideas through any medium of public communication. Advertising, in the past decade has undergone significant development and it now comprises television, radio and internet besides the traditional print media. Levens (2012) defines advertising as the paid, non -personal communication of a marketing message by an identified sponsor through mass media which acts as a tool for a company to massively introduce a product or service to the consumers using the available media that are endless starting from billboards, posters, wall paintings to the most explicit places like the back of event tickets or even the public transport t hat roams all over the city. Government sponsored advertisements (GSA ) or public service advertisement (PSA) on the other hand can be defined as messages in the public interest disseminated by the media without charge. Today, public serviceadvertising has been increasingly used in a non-commercial fashion in several countries across the world in order to promote various social causes (Devadas and Manohar, 2011). The objective is to raise awareness, change public attitudes and behavior towards social issues. The purpose of this paper is to explore as to whether advertisement s sponsored by the Malaysian government merely disclose social responsibility information or do they go beyond this to inculcate Higher Order Thinking Skills among the audience from the three generations; Baby boomers, Generation X and Generation Y. As such, a purposive sampling was used in the selection of the advertisements for the study based on thecontent that catered for the three generations. To identify whether the advertisements inculcate Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) according to Blooms Taxanomy (1990), the contents of the advertisements were analysed using a framework based on an integrated approach combining content and semiotic analysis. To further support the findings, a survey was carried out among 100 samples to identify their perception on government sponsored advertisements. The samples for the survey were also selected using a purposive sampling. This was to ensure that there were representatives from the three generations. It is hoped that this study will contribute to the scarce l iterature on the effectiveness of advertisements in cultivating Higher Order Thinking Skills.

Malaysia is preparing to face 21st century learning challenges in order to fulfill the global needs. As a result, Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) have been introduced in the education system with the purpose to produce critical students who are able to compete at the international arena. Thus, this study investigated the question types used by teachers of English as a second language (ESL). Besides, this study also examined the challenges faced by the teachers in incorporating HOTS element in their teaching. The data for this study were gathered by means of class observations, interviews and questionnaires. The data collected by means of classroom observation and interviews were analysed thematically whilst the questionnaire data were analysed using descriptive statistic method. The findings of this study reveal that ESL teachers favour display questions or LOTS compared to referential questions, HOTS. This is due to lack of knowledge regarding HOTS questions and students' English low proficiency level. This study, therefore, recommends that ESL teachers are in need of adequate training on HOTS before they can successfully implement HOTS in language classrooms and further relevant studies should focus on the ways in which HOTS can be incorporated in ESL classrooms.

Higher order thinking skills (HOTS) is one of important aspects in education. Students with high level of higher order thinking skills tend to be more successful. However, do this phenomenon also happen in the learning of Mathematics? To answer this question, this research aims to study the relationship between HOTS and students' academic performance in Mathematics instruction. The research is conducted by occupying correlation research method on 41 students of mathematics education in university of Papua who had already completed 120 credits. The instrument in a test format for HOTS measurement has two main indicators; the critical thinking skill and creative thinking skill. Students are selected as research subjects, and are asked to do 9 questions of HOTS test in 60 minutes. The holistic rubric is used to assess the higher order thinking skills of students. The results of research show that these two variables have a high value of correlation (r = 0.814) and the regression equation is grade point average = 2,105 + 0,017 HOTS. Both of statistics show that there is a significant relationship between HOTS and students' academic achievement.

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is a way of thinking that puts forward the values of critical and creative thinking so that it is considered capable of providing solutions in facing the challenges of the times. To have high-level thinking skills (HOTS), teachers must be able to design HOTS-based learning to help students develop higher-order thinking skills. The ability in question is related to the ability to think critically, reflective, metacognitive, and creative thinking. This is consistent with the objectives in the 2013 curriculum in PP No. 17 of 2010, to prepare Indonesian people to have the ability to live as individuals and citizens who are faithful, productive, creative, innovative, and affective and able to contribute to the life of society, nation, state and world civilization
