The present study was conducted to measure the adoption levels of rice growers in 3 tehsils of Baramulla district namely Sopore, Bomai and Pattan. Four villages from each tehsil were selected randomly which makes a total of 12 villages and 10 rice growers from each village those were having above half an acre under rice were purposively selected that makes a sample of 120 rice growers for the study. It was found that majority (55.00 %) of the respondents had medium level of adoption. Majority of the respondents had full adoption of recommended rice varieties (55.83%), sowing time (93.33%), number of ploughings for puddling (71.66%) time of application nutrients for nursery (100%), dosage of nutrients (50.83%), time of application of FYM (97.50%) and time of application of weedicide(74.16%) whereas no adoption regarding seed treatment and dosage for seed treatment (76.66%) and none of respondents had adopted either disease management practices or pest management practices. The main reasons for non adoption were very poor knowledge about SKUAST-K recommendations (51.66%), producing only for consumption purpose (36.66%), poor contacts with officials of agriculture department about acquiring of knowledge regarding rice cultivation (27.50%) as mentioned by rice growers. The present study was not focused solely on adoption level of rice growers but also on constraints in adoption of recommended package of practices which can be the basis for further studies.

The research was conducted in Vijayapura district of Karnataka during the year 2019-20 with the sample size of 120 respondents. The findings revealed that, in case of beneficiary farmers about 41.67 per cent of the red gram farmers were found in high level of adoption category. While, In case of non-beneficiary farmers about 43.34 per cent of the red gram farmers were found in medium level of adoption level category. It is clear that, in case of beneficiary farmers about cent (100.00 %) per cent of the respondents have fully adopted red gram variety, recommended seed rate, intercultivation and weeding. Whereas, 83.33 per cent of the respondents have fully adopted recommended spacing, 76.67 per cent fully adopted pest management, 75.00 per cent fully adopted timely sowing and disease management, 73.33 per cent have fully adopted summer ploughing, 70.00 per cent fully adopted seed treatment, 66.67 per cent have fully adopted recommended dose of fertilizer, 51.67 per cent fully adopted nipping practice. It is clear that, in case of non-beneficiary farmers about cent (100.00 %) per cent of the respondents have fully adopted red gram variety and weeding. Followed by, 90.00 per cent have fully adopted recommended seed rate, 83.34 per cent have fully adopted intercultivation, 71.67 per cent have fully adopted seed treatment and recommended dose of fertilizer application, 70.00 per cent have fully adopted pest management, 68.33 per cent have fully adopted summer ploughing. Further about 56.67 per cent have fully adopted time of sowing, 55.00 per cent have adopted disease management.

Keeping in view of effective extension approach of Frontline demonstrations (FLDs) for dissemination of technology FLDs on turmeric conducted by KVK, Turki, Bihar. The yield and economic performance of frontline demonstration, horizontal spread of technology, extent of adoption level and extent of satisfaction of respondent farmer over extension services and performance of demonstration was measured. It was observed that there was 15.0 to 19.6 per cent increase in fresh rhizome yield over local check and the average benefit cost ratio was higher under demonstration 3.3 as compared to control plots 2.5 during the all years of the study. The horizontal spread of turmeric cv. Rajendra sonali was estimated from about 13 ha during 2015-16 to 43 ha during the year 2019-20. The findings of the study also revealed that there was increase in adoption level ranging from 9.4 per cent of sowing time and method to 46.9 per cent of improved and quality seed after the FLD programmes. The majority of the respondent farmers expressed high extent (51.2%) to the medium (34.4%) extent of satisfaction from extension services and performance of technology under demonstrations. It can be concluded that frontline demonstrations are one of the important tool to demonstrate newly released crop production and protection technologies and its management practices in the farmer’s field under different agro-climatic region and farming situations.

Good dairy management practices are a widely important tool for facilitating and promoting farmers' production and marketing of healthy, high quality milk and milk products to meet food and consumer expectations. In this context, the present research study was designed to make an attempt to find out the extent of adoption of animal welfare practices by the dairy farmers at field level. The study was conducted in the Central plain zone of Uttar Pradesh State. Four districts (Hardoi, Auraiya, Allahabad and Kaushambi) were selected purposively. One block from each district and from each block two villages and from each village 15 farmer-respondents were selected randomly. A total of 120 respondents were finally approached for the primary data collection. The salient findings with regard to adoption of good dairy management practices revealed that, more than half of the respondents (55.83%) belonged to medium level of adoption category, followed by 27.56 and 16.67% in low and high level of adoption category, respectively. The study further suggests sensitizing and training the extension personnel’s /veterinarians about the good dairy management practices and strengthening the dairy extension services among dairy farmers in the study area.

Animal welfare assumes much significance in the era of dairy commercialization, both for health of the animals as well as to improve the farm productivity. Although animal welfare scores, scales and modules have been developed and implemented at developed countries, the outreach of animal welfare and awareness about the same has not been given due importance in developing countries including India. The main objective of cluster front line demonstrations (CFLDs) is to demonstrate newly released crop production and protection technologies and its management practices at the farmer’s field in cluster approach under different agro-climatic regions and farming situations. Pointing the importance of cluster frontline demonstrations in transfer of oilseed production technologies, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Barpeta conducted CFLDs at farmers’ field and accordingly study was conducted in Barpeta district of Assam. The study revealed that important package of practices where more increase in adoption was found were use of high yielding variety of rapeseed Var-TS-38 (72.5%), seed treatment (67.5%), use of proper seed rate (65.0%), recommended fertilizer dose (57.5%), line sowing on furrows (40.0%), weed management (27.5%) and sowing time (30.0%). There was noteworthy difference observed in yield of oilseed before conductance of CFLD and after CFLD programme. B:C ratio of oilseed crop after CFLD was higher than before CFLD. It showed impact of CFLD on adoption of oilseed production technologies. The factors responsible for low B:C ratio before CFLD was less adoption of all the recommended package of practices for oilseed crop in the region.

Few postharvest treatments are available for managing sour rot of citrus caused by Galactomyces citri-aurantii and they are generally not very effective. The demethylation-inhibiting (DMI) triazole fungicides propiconazole and cyproconazole were found to be highly effective and more efficacious than other DMIs evaluated, such as metconazole and tebuconazole, in reducing postharvest sour rot of citrus. Additional studies were conducted with propiconazole as a postharvest treatment because it has favorable toxicological characteristics for food crop registration in the United States and the registrant supports a worldwide registration. Regression and covariance analyses were performed to determine optimal time of application after inoculation and fungicide rate. In laboratory studies, decay incidence increased when propiconazole applications were delayed from 8 to 24 h (lemon) or 18 to 42 h (grapefruit) after inoculation. Effective rates of the fungicide were 64 to 512 μg/ml and were dependent on inoculum concentration of the sour rot pathogen and on the type of citrus fruit. Propiconazole was found to be compatible with sodium hypochlorite at 100 μg/ml and 1 to 3% sodium bicarbonate without loss of efficacy for decay control on lemon. The addition of hydrogen peroxide/peroxyacetic acid at 80 μg/ml slightly decreased the effectiveness of propiconazole. Heated (48°C) solutions of propiconazole did not significantly improve the efficacy compared with solutions at 22°C. In experimental packing-line studies, aqueous in-line drenches applied alone or followed by applications of the fungicide in storage or packing fruit coatings were highly effective, reducing sour rot to between 0 and 1.2% compared with 83.8% decay incidence in the control when treatments were made up to 16 h after inoculation. When the fungicide was applied in either fruit coating, decay was only reduced to 49.1 to 57.1% incidence. Tank mixtures of propiconazole with the citrus postharvest fungicides fludioxonil and azoxystrobin were highly effective in reducing green mold caused by isolates of Penicillium digitatum sensitive or moderately resistant to imazalil and sour rot. Propiconazole will be an important postharvest fungicide for managing sour rot of citrus and potentially can be integrated into current management practices to reduce postharvest crop losses caused by DMI-sensitive isolates of P. digitatum.

Abstract A total of 452 rice farmers from three main granary areas of Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA), Kemubu Agricultural Development Authority (KADA), and Integrated Agricultural Development Area Barat Laut Selangor (IADA BLS) were surveyed in 2019. The goal was to determine farmers’ knowledge of and management practices for weedy rice (Oryza spp.) as well as the adoption level of Clearfield® rice technology (CRT) in Malaysia. Most farmers (74%) were adept at recognizing weedy rice. The majority of farmers (77%) perceived transplanting and water seeding rice systems as the best options to manage weedy rice, while only 10% of the farmers adopted CRT. The low level of adoption of this technology was due to several constraints, including the high cost of the CRT package and occurrence of imidazolinone (IMI)-resistant weedy rice in their farms. Farmers from MADA and IADA BLS reported the occurrence of IMI weedy rice in their farms for more than nine planting seasons, whereas those from KADA reported having resistant weedy rice for five to six planting seasons. The main factor contributing to the evolution of IMI-resistant weedy rice was ignorance about the technology and deliberate disregard of stewardship guidelines. The survey revealed that there is a need to increase awareness about CRT through training and educational programs for proper adoption of this technology.

ABSTRACT The upland rice farmers in Suriname use local varieties and low level technologies in the field. As a result, the upland rice grain yield is low, at about 1 000 kg ha-1. Our objective was to evaluate the use of upland rice cultivars from Suriname and Brazil, and the effect of nitrogen, N, phosphorus, P, and potassium, K, fertilizers on cultivation variables. We undertook four field trials in the Victoria Area, in the Brokopondo District, using a randomized block design each with four replications. The most productive rice varieties were BRS Esmeralda (grain yield 2 903 kg ha-1) and BRS Sertaneja (2 802 kg ha-1). The highest grain yield of 2 620 kg ha-1 was achieved with a top dressing application of 76.41 kg N ha-1 20 days after sowing. For P, the highest grain yield of 3 085 kg ha-1 was achieved with application of 98.06 kg ha-1 P2O5 applied at sowing. An application rate of 31.45 kg ha-1 of K2O at sowing achieved the highest grain yield of 2 952 kg ha-1. Together, these application rates of N, P and K resulted in rice grain yield of about 3 000 kg ha-1, which is three times greater than the national average for upland rice. We demonstrate that the use of improved rice varieties matched to the local conditions, and application of appropriate fertilizers, are management practices that can result in significant increases in rice grain yield in Suriname.

Potato is an important staple food crop in both developed and developing countries. However, potato plants are susceptible to several economically important viruses that reduce yields by up to 50% and affect tuber quality. One of the major threats is corky ringspot, which is a tuber necrosis caused by tobacco rattle virus (TRV). The appearance of corky ringspot symptoms on tubers prior to commercialization results in ≈ 45% of the tubers being downgraded in quality and value, while ≈ 55% are declared unsaleable. To improve current disease management practices, we have developed simple diagnostic methods for the reliable detection of TRV without RNA purification, involving minimalized sample handling (mini), subsequent improved colorimetric loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), and final verification by lateral-flow dipstick (LFD) analysis. Having optimized the mini-LAMP-LFD approach for the sensitive and specific detection of TRV, we confirmed the reliability and robustness of this approach by the simultaneous detection of TRV and other harmful viruses in duplex LAMP reactions. Therefore, our new approach offers breeders, producers, and farmers an inexpensive and efficient new platform for disease management in potato breeding and cultivation.
