Experiments were conducted in outdoor earthen lined pond to study periphyton quantity on three types of natural substrates such as split bamboo pole, coconut coir and coconut shell, which was placed inside the earthen lined pond filled with seawater for duration of 45 days. Observations were made in every 15th day for growth of periphyton both qualitatively and quantitatively on the three natural substrates and physico-chemical properties of selected pond water such as transparency, water temperature, salinity, pH, Dissolved oxygen, Ammonia (NH3-N), Nitrite (NO2-N), Nitrate (NO3-N), BOD and Chlorophyll ‘a’ were recorded during periphyton samplings. The periphy-ton quantity (34562 ± 671 cells / cm2) observed for coconut coir was higher than the split bamboo pole (33104 ± 810 cells / cm2), and coconut shell (21194 ± 872 cells / cm2) in the final day of the experiment. One way ANOVA of the data collected clearly affirmed that significant differences were observed (P < 0.05) in periphyton quantity among the three substrates tested. A total 16 phyto-periphytic microalgae (Bacillariophyceae – 10 types, Dinophyceae – 4 types and Cyanophyceae – 2 types) and 10 Zoo-periphyton (Copepod- 4 types, Meroplankton – 4 types and Tintin-nidae – 2 types) were recorded from these three substrates. Among the different phyto-periphytic microalgae, Bacil-lariophyceae group were found to be more (Split bamboo pole – 72%, Coconut coir – 73% and Coconut shell – 71%) on three substrates studied. Further, coconut coir was found to be best substrate than split bamboo pole and coconut shell, which can be utilized by fin and shellfishes as natural food.

Ramshagar dighi is a larger historical man made reservoir (Dighi, Bengali meaning) situated at Tajpur village in Dinajpur, Bangladesh. This study was aimed to estimate current status of physico-chemical variables of water of Ramshagar dighi at Dinajpur District, Bangladesh. Monthly average changes in physico-chemical parameters such as water temperature, total dissolved oxygen, air temperature, humidity, rainfall, water depth and pH of water were analyzed for the period of 11 months from May 2011 to March 2012. The average air temperature (°C) at the study area of Ramshagar dighi at Dinajpur District was determined as 24.97 ± 4.92. Our present study showed that physico-chemical properties of water in Ramshagar dighi were monthly average of water temperature (°C) as 24.68 ± 4.77, air temperature (°C) 24.97 ± 4.92, humidity as 82.075 ± 4.14, rainfall as 1534.5 mm, water depth as 9.10 m ± 1.286, pH as7.67± 0.48 and carbon dioxide as 0.85 ± 0.92 as well as dissolved oxygen as 4.65 ± 0.62 respectively during the period of May 2011 to March 2012. The study was carried out to identify the parasite and causative diseases on cage reared tilapia at Bakerganj upazila, Barisal district. The infected tilapia fishes were collected from the cages and brought to the laboratory to find out signs, symptoms and infection area on the fish body. Physico-chemical parameters of water, such as water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, phosphate and ammonia were monitored fortnightly. The values of water temperature (°C), pH, dissolved oxygen (mg/l), nitrate (mg/l), phosphate (mg/l) and ammonia (mg/l) were 32.4±2.1, 6.2±0.3, 7.52±0.4, 0.028±.008, 11.30±2.26 and 0.09±0.02, respectively but the concentration of nitrate was so higher during the study time. Eleven species of parasites namely, Chilodonella sp, Trichodiniasp., Gyrodactylussp.,Cichlidogyrus sp., Capillariasp, Orientocreadium sp, Eustrongylidae sp, Allocreadium sp, Euclinostomum sp, Tylodelphys sp. and Metagonimus spwere were identified. Parasites were found on all the examined parts of the fish body but gill showed the most infested area of the host. Highest mortality rate was occurred in the month of October and lowest mortality rate was in July. In this circumstance, proper management system and handling are best ways to prevent diseases and reduce the mortality rate of tilapia on cage farming in the southern area. Res. Agric., Livest. Physico-chemical parameters of the Seepage stream of Shripur area were studied for two years from July, 2002 to June, 2004, once in every month at regular intervals. The maximum air temperature was recorded in rainy season during first year (July, 2002 to June, 2003) and second year study period (July, 2003 to June, 2004). Water temperature was maximum in summer and lowest in winter season. Transparency, total alkalinity, total hardness, chloride were maximum in winter season. Free CO2 and BOD was maximum in summer season. The minimum transparency, total alkalinity, total hardness and chloride were recorded in rainy season. DO and pH were maximum in winter and minimum in summer season during the whole study period. Air temperature, water temperature, free CO2, BOD showed positive and significant correlation with each other. Transparency showed positive and significant correlation with pH, DO, total alkalinity, total hardness and chloride. pH showed positive and significant correlation with DO and chloride. Similarly, DO, total alkalinity, total hardness and chloride showed positive and significant correlation with each other. Among different water quality parameters dissolved oxygen, transparency, pH, PO4-P and depth varied significantly among the sampling sites. The pH value in the present investigation remained a buffer condition (6.50- 7.90). Dissolved oxygen was ranges from 3.80 to 11.60 mg/l throughout the study periods. PO4-P concentration was observed highest (0.30 mg/l) in sampling site 2. On the basis of physical, chemical aspects sampling site 3 and sampling site 5 (situated in gosaipur and chandandoho) found in better condition in terms of limnological aspects. Present work is based on the physico-chemical parameters of Haleji lake. Physical factors and chemistry oflake water were analyzed with regular intervals. The color of water showed variation from light green to yellowishgreen, air temperature ranged between 20 °C to 35 °C, water temperature between 17 °C to 33 °C , pH 5.5 to 7.5,dissolved oxygen 2.04 mg/L to 6.44 mg/L, salinity 0.32 mg/L to 1.1 mg/L, alkalinity from 30 mg/L to 100 mg/L,acidity 10 to 96 mg/L, sulphate 4.5 mg/L to 305 mg/L, phosphate from 1 mg/L to 190 mg/L, and nitrates 9 mg/L to 270mg/L during 2006, 2007 and 2008 respectively.

Anthropogenic activities such as industrial effluent, domestic and agricultural waste disposal constitute major sources of pollution in water. The effects of these pollutants on the physico- chemical properties of Lake Kivu, Rwanda were investigated at three locations (Gisenyi, Kibuye and Cyangugu) between February 2005 and December 2006. Water samples used for physico- chemical analysis were collected from 12 stratified points on the lake. Samples collected were analysed and interpreted using appropriate international procedures. The physico -chemical properties measured were temperature, conductivity, pH, transparency, salinity, total alkalinity, dissolved organic matter (DOM), total dissolved solids (TDS), dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), nitrate – nitrogen, phosphate – phosphorus and sulphate. Mean water temperature measured (24.7 + 0.58 o C) was highest in Kibuye and lowest (24.5 + 0.31 o C) in Cyan gugu. The lake water was moderately hard with mean total alkalinity values of 88.1 ± 1.63mgL -1 ; 79.7 ± 2.36mgL -1 and 81.0 ± 2.46mg L -1 recorded in Gisenyi, Kibuye and Cyangugu respectively; salty and alkaline with mean pH values of 8.87 ± 0.07 in Gisenyi; 8.86 ± 0.06 in Kibuye and 8.91 ± 0.06 in Cyangugu. Total dissolved solids (TDS) level in the lake was above the 500mg L -1 prescribed by WHO while the mean biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) reading was within the range for unpolluted or moderately polluted lake. Water from the lake showed mineralization with mean conductivity values ranging from 1058 - 1184μS cm -1 in Gisenyi; 1058 - 1147μS cm -1 in Kibuye and 1031 - 1116μS cm -1 in Cyangugu. The mean dissolved oxygen values were below the 5mgl -1 limit recommended by WHO for fresh water fish species. SO 4- -2 and NO 3 – N concentration in the lake water does not constitute any serious health risk to both man and the aquatic organisms it supports. However, there is the need to constantly monitor the lake water to mitigate any build up of the ions to a hazardous level.

Among the various agro-industries, food processing industries are the second prime generator of wastes after domestic sewage. In the current epoch of the rapid budding world, the wastes are mounting, which robustly sway the health of ecosystems and eventually the human population. For that reason, each agro-industrial sector has critical stipulation toward the secure utilization of agro-materials all the way through recycling of wastes. A crude disposal and littering of these waste materials frequently signifies a problem that is additionally provoked by different legal restrictions. Inadequate management of these solid waste constituents could lead to drastic change in physico-chemical properties of soils. The waste product, which is discarded into the environment, is loaded with valuable compounds. They are new, innate, and monetary sources of colorants, protein, dietary fiber, flavoring, antimicrobials, and antioxidants, which can be utilized in the food industry as a basis of natural food additives.

This study measured surface water temperature, water pH, TDS, EC, DO, nitrate, ammonium, sulphate and DIP as water physico-chemical properties of four freshwater reservoirs from Barishal Sadar upozilla. The surface water temperature was recorded highest (22.4 °C) in station 4 and loest was in station 1. Water pH, nitrate, ammonium and sulphate showed almost same results among the four reservoirs. TDS and EC values range from 188 to 215 mg/l and 195 to 225 µS/cm, respectively. DO level was almost similar in all the stations except station 1 which showed comparatively lowest amount (4.55 mg/l). DIP ranges from 3.20 to 4.15 mg/l. Among the four reservoirs, comparatively newly established BU pond (station 4) showed poor results than the others.

The present study aims to research the physico-chemical processes in two under-researched coastal systems located on the west and south Portuguese coast—Mira Estuary and Ria de Alvor—through the development and exploitation of dedicated coupled physical and water quality models. Both systems are highly dynamic, supporting a wide range of biological diversity; however, they are characterized by distinct environmental and oceanographic conditions, enhancing the importance of a comparative approach. In this context, the Delft3D modeling suite was implemented and successfully calibrated and validated for both systems, accurately reproducing their hydrodynamic, hydrographic, and chemical features. A broad characterization of Mira Estuary and Ria de Alvor was carried out. Results show that the tidal wave interacts differently with the different geomorphology of each estuary. The tidal wave amplitude decreases as it propagates upstream for both estuaries; however, the magnitude for Ria de Alvor is higher. A flood tidal dominance was found for Mira Estuary, allowing the transport of well-oxygenated water into the estuary, contributing to high residence times in the middle estuary and therefore to poor dissolved oxygen (DO) replenishment. Ria de Alvor shifts from ebb dominance at the central area to flood dominance upstream with low residence times, allowing an effective exchange of water properties. Results also reveal that the water temperature is the dominant driver of seasonal dissolved oxygen variations in both estuaries, with the lowest levels occurring during the late summer months when the water temperature is highest. In addition, pH is influenced by biological activity and freshwater inflow.
