This current study was intended to investigate the student point of views on the use of authentic materials (AMs) used in the process of teaching and learning speaking at the first semester in English Department, IKIP Budi Utomo Malang. A descriptive qualitative was employed to portray the intended data. The data were revealed from 22 students experiencing learning speaking by using authentic materials (AMs). To help the researcher, as the key instrument, to obtain the data, the researcher used an interview guide. To make the data display clear, the findings were classified into three classes; they were students’ views on the use of videos, student’ views on dialogues used in Basic Speaking, and students’s point of views on the pictures used as Ams. In general, the interview results showed that AMs were basically interesting, motivating, providing information on how the language used and how English culture is, raising students’ feeling of confidence. In term of the comprehensibility of the materials, however, only a few students stated that the presented materials were understandable; while the others thought that they could not understand the AMs because the spoken communication made by native speakers was too fast. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the teaching material presented in the Basic Speaking class viewed in positive manners by the students. Some students, however, found that the materials, especially conversation made by native speakers, were seen incomprehensible as the models in the video spoke too fast and used long sentences. This informed the teachers that even though AMs were found to be beneficial, AMs should be carefully selected; by so doing, it is expected that the AMs will opt to the students’ level.

Islamization in Mataram shows symptoms of transformation of the cultural system of society, from global to local culture, from great culture to little culture; Sultan Agung, the last student of Sunan Kalijaga, played an important role in this task. as the third king of the Mataram, he strongly criticized the Islamization model which did not build local conciusness because it uprooted the cultural roots of the community from where it had grown, which would hinder the process of Islamization and the process of community maturity. For this reason, he formulated his thoughts through allegorical poems in the Sastra Gending Literature text. The purpose of this study is to provide an interpretation of the literary Sastra gending so that an integrative acculturative pattern is found in concocting a phenomenal model of Islamization in the Mataram era. This study was carried out by exploring library data, which will be assembled by utilizing historical research methodology of thought, while analyzing the contents utilizing social hermeneutics. Conclusion This study has 2 things: 1) Serat Sastra Gending contains that’s about personal self-integration and divine integration; 2) According to Sultan Agung, human should understand the essence of religious teachings in a balanced way, it will make human life harmonious and peaceful, not mutually blaming and toppling each other. ‘Traditional’ theories of learning as pratical dimensions of psychology majorly tend to focus their interest on humans’ inner factors that influence the process of learning such as intelligences, motivation, interest, attitude, concentration and aptitude. They never connect it with instruments and technological inventions such as multimedia, cyber celluler, internet, even social organization, cultural values, traditions etc., while these are very influential nowdays towards the progress and behaviors of human life. As such the application of connectivism theory of learning which connect those dimensions of life with learning activities, is now and then insparable from any effort to promote the quality of humans’ learning itself, including in teaching and learning languages.

Work book is one of the principal necessities in the process
of teaching and learning second language. A comprehensive work-
book will work as step-by-step guidance both for the teacher and
students; teacher will know what to do to transfer the knowledge
effectively within very limited time constraint; and students will be
provided clear clue to comprehend required materials and acquire
the necessary skills. Without work book, teacher will have to think
and work harder in every meeting to measure their students’ needs
and adapt the materials to their comprehension capacity.
Third semester students of English Teaching Department of
IAIN Antasari Banjarmasin can be classifi ed as beginning learners
of English. For most students who live in a non-speaking English
country such as Indonesia, listening skill is diffi cult to comprehend.
Listening skills is seen not only as something valuable for its
own sake but as something that supports the growth of other as-
pects of language use, such as speaking and reading. Once
meaning has been identifi ed there is no further need to attend to the
form of messages.
Students have problems to catch the actual sounds of the for-
eign language; understand every word which make them feel wor-
ried and stressed; understand fast, natural native-sounding speech;
keep up with all the information they get and they cannot predict.
To overcome these problems teachers can help students by teach
them how to improve their listening through some skills and teach
the students by using media.
Dealing with the purpose of this research in developing work-
book for English listening class, the suitable design for this research
is research and development (R&D).

Culture is an important aspect in learning a foreign language. This paper discusses three main conceptual issues: the concept of culture, its dimensions, and its implication to the teaching of English. In a broader sense, culture umbrellas arts, music, literary works, scientific findings, and other human beings’ creations. In a narrower sense, culture covers habits, customs, and social behaviours of a society. Four cultural dimensions: individualism, collectivism, high-context, and low-context are discussed. Deductive and inductive methods of reasoning are also discussed. In context of the teaching of English, culture is classified into local culture, foreign culture, and academic culture. Local culture refers to values and norms shared by the students who learn English as a foreign language. Foreign culture is the beliefs, norms, and values of the target language. Academic culture is the norms and values practiced in academic life. This paper strongly argues that the teaching of English as a foreign language should be based on local cultural values and norms. Language functions to express thoughts and culture. Therefore, English is used as an instrument to express thoughts and culture of learners who learn English. Keyword: culture, English language teaching, academic culture.

The approach to language learning as a way of coming to understand target culture and its impact on target language is reflected in the concept of teaching and learning languages through the integration of intercultural capabilities. The concept will be supported by a number of examples taken from authentic materials language learners have encountered in target language contexts, predominantly gaining experience through reading authentic materials. The paper presents the ideas of university students who carried out their own projects within and after research run by Trnava University, the representatives of which actively participated in a three-year project, supported by the VEGA funding scheme under number 1/0106/15. Twenty-two students who participated in our experiment were asked to analyze formal English in its written mode, searching for characteristic features of formal writing, used in contemporary English. After the completion of the first task related to the selection of appropriate samples, the students were expected to compare the quality of authentic materials received through technologies and that achieved from reading contemporary literary prose, newspapers and academic texts. The idea behind this task was to help university students to be able to critically assess other people’s ideas and arguments, to apply critical thinking when reading, to evaluate authentic materials and to achieve the ability to construct effective arguments in formal writing.
