This study aims to identify entrepreneurial characteristics possessed by young farmers. Young farmers who are the object of study are horticulture farmers in Kabupaten Bandung Barat. This study tries to explain the characteristics of farmers in terms of entrepreneurship. This study focuses on young farmers in Cisarua, Parongpong, and Lembang Subdistricts, with land ownership of no more than two hectares (small scale). The determination of the sample is done by a stratified random sampling method. The strata in this study are young farmers under the age of 40 and farming in the sub-sector of horticulture products in Kabupaten Bandung Barat. The next step is to determine the sample in the study as many as 120 farmers. Farmers who play a role as entrepreneurs are not only experts in the production process, but they have visionary results-oriented business managerial skills. The results of the study show that the majority of respondents have moderate (moderate) entrepreneurial characteristics. This is more due to the farming climate in rural areas which is still moderate, not oriented to professionalism and entrepreneurship. However, young farmers have a desire to develop, so that their business processes are different from those of farmers in general, where young farmers are starting to implement professional work methods in their gardens. The entrepreneurial approach has been seen in the way they do business, where they always want to be better, always look for the latest information, create innovations in the garden, apply management in their farming and take risks.

The margin obtained at the upstream in the Indonesian commercial seaweed supply chain is generally small and makes the motivation for business development low. The research aimed to identify the opportunities to overcome these problems. The research conducted with the Kaizen analysis approach that seven upstream business nodes were chosen at three locations: two Gracilaria sp. farmers and one Gracilaria sp. trader in Brebes, one Eucheumatoid farmer and one intermediary trader in Serang, also two Eucheumatoid farmers in Sumenep. The results show some inefficiency in several loci in the business lines of intermediate farmers and traders. These include a gap on moisture content (Gracilaria of 2 % and Eucheumatoid of 4 %), productivity of Gracilaria pond 0.6 t ha–1 yr–1 and its by-product is 50 %, while the productivity of Eucheumatoids was 10 %. The quality of dry Gracilaria is one grade only. All result loss of potential margin. Root problem analysis found several external factors outside the Kaizen domain and other internal aspects can be corrected through intervention. The Kaizen analysis determined some simple interventions including improvement of cultivation embankments and extension of maintenance periods, use of monofilament net to dry seaweed, optimization of cultivation spacing, and use of moisture checker.

Transport management systems (TMS) / FMS evolve as a result of developing novel functionalities. The greatest challenge is TMS integration within the existing IT infrastructure of the company. Calculating return on investment (ROI) based on data analysis is important to select the optimum FMS. During the implementation of an FMS, of importance is to adapt the system to the business processes and train the employees in software usage. The architecture of an FMS affects the process of its implementation. Its implementation has many benefits and greatly improves company performance, including profitability.

Business Process Reengineering has been touted by many as dramatic improvements necessary for organization competitiveness, but in practice there are many unsuccessful cases. Thus, there is need for a more systematic and rigorous assessment of the factors deemed important to project success. That is the main objective of this study. In this case, success has been defined in three different ways: goals and objectives accomplished by the project, benefits derived from the project, and its impact on company performance. Based on the results, recommendations are made for managers to focus attention and resources on factors important to success, and to proceed in a fashion which minimizes the risk of failure. The point of entry into the companies participating in this study were internal auditing directors and comptrollers (IA's). Questionnaires were mailed to the IA's of 586 randomly selected manufacturing organizations. The usable sample of 135 questionnaires represent a 22 percent response rate. In general, organizations are not emphasizing some of the most important activities and tasks recommended in the BPR literature, such as changes to customer/market related business processes, the value-added element of every business activity, and applying the right innovative technology. Based on the findings as a whole, it behooves top managers not to engage in BPR before ensuring the presence of the success factors found to be important. While the findings are based on manufacturing companies, the results may be generalizable to other industrial sectors.

Standards and regulations have become an important part of today’s society. Organizational and geographical dispersions often create situations where manufacturers are forced to meet various standards for a product to reach expanded markets or improve branding. In this paper we propose an approach that provides stakeholders with the means to harmonize a set of standards by identifying similarities and differences between their coverage. Using an analysis approach based on the Zachman framework, we are able to identify both overlaps and gaps that may transpire when analyzing multiple standards associated with a single product domain. To demonstrate our approach, we apply it to a subset of electronics-related sustainability standards. The results are sets of terms that can be used to define the gaps and overlaps between three standards: RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive), WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronics Equipment Directive), and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) P1680. We then discuss some of the challenges encountered when analyzing these standards. Finally, we briefly discuss the potential for an expanded approach that could assist in the development of domain models and ultimately help identify necessary actions in business processes that will lead to additional standard compliance.

Purpose– This article aims to assess the influence of cost strategy policies on the performance of sole traders, small and medium-sized companies in the civil construction sector in Curitiba and the Metropolitan Region (southern Brazil). Design/methodology/approach– Using a questionnaire, the survey collected data from 95 companies. The data has been analyzed based on descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis using discriminant analysis. Findings– Results showed that a lack of a strategic process is more evident in companies classified as low to medium performance companies. Only 36% of companies are positioned for only one of the positioning strategies. The cost strategy variable, which had the greatest impact on performance, was the policy with “greater simplification/standardization of products/services” compared to the other variables analyzed in the study. Originality/value– Results imply that most companies do not have a strategic position and that it is possible to obtain better performance through strategic management, encouraging the development of this perspective in companies in the sector. Keywords - Construction Industry; Strategy; Strategic management; Cost strategy; Survey.
