Communication skills are one of the most important soft skills in the 21st century. There is a sad fact that even young Vietnamese, although learning English as an official subject at school, almost always show a lack of confidence when communicating with foreigners. Many high school graduates or even university students, when meeting foreigners, teach-ers or speaking in front of the class, still can not say anything more than simple questions such as greetings and introducing themselves. This study was conducted by the Ho Chi Minh City University of Food Industry (HUFI). With the participation of 120 students. Through the questionnaire. This study was for the purpose of indicating the errors that students make, as well as finding solutions that support their skills to learn and improve their ability to communicate. The results of this study showed the participation of 120 students. Only 50 out of 120 students received good reviews in the research, 45 students still lack skills and confidence when communicating and received an average rating. The rest of the 120 study participants were rated as weak, lacking a lot of communication skills. This condition needs to be interested in, as if not even when communicating with Vietnamese in English, you will lack confidence.

The challenge of becoming employable 21st century graduates to meet current industry demands was the basis of this innovation. With the aim to equip a group of students with soft skills on one hand, and another with industry-specific communicative abilities on the other, the Modern Language Olympiad (MLO) was established under Akademi Pengajian Bahasa, UiTM Shah Alam, as the first multi-language competition held internationally that is fully student-led. Five categories of competitions were designed with close engagement with the industry, which were strategic storytelling, idea pitching, versatile presenting, and radio drama across three languages (English, Bahasa Melayu, and Arabic) from 29 October to 2 November 2019. Preparations to conduct this international competition commenced a year before that. In total, 330 participants from 11 public universities, 6 private universities and 4 foreign universities and 10 UiTM branch campuses participated in the event, which was run by 40 student committee and 100 student volunteers, guided by 30 academic advisors. A total of 40 judges from the industry were involved in the competitions. The event, which amassed a total profit of RM58,416.45, managed to develop the student committee’s critical thinking, problem solving, time management, project management, and budgeting skills, while the participants gained immeasurable benefits in enhancing their communication skills through feedback from the industry and by observing others. This innovation is a step forward to improve students’ soft skills and communication skills using the two-pronged approach through running a student-led, student-driven, wide-scale international event.

PurposeThis study aims at investigating the indirect effect of soft skills on career engagement through the role of psychological capital (PsyCap) in different age groups. The social cognitive theory (SCT) and job demands-resource model (JD-R) were employed to explain the effect of perceived skill mastery on PsyCap and career engagement.Design/methodology/approachThe data were collected from 707 high school students, 150 university students and 165 employees using a three-wave data collection technique. This study measured soft skills, PsyCap and career engagement at different age groups (i.e. high school students, university students and employees). The data were analysed using a moderated-mediation technique.FindingsThe results showed that soft skills positively influenced PsyCap and eventually increased career engagement in all age groups. However, the effect was stronger for students (both in high school and university) than employees in the workplaces. Unlike most students, employees related soft skills to performance. Regardless of the effect on performance, students would be more likely than employees to perceive soft skill mastery as a source of efficacy.Research limitations/implicationsFirst, the education system should direct more attention to developing students' non-cognitive skills. Second, people should understand that their career advancement continues in the workplace context. Organizations can foster employees' soft skills by providing more opportunities to develop new skills.Originality/valueThis study sheds light on the importance of soft skills beyond academic and workplace performance. This study is among the few empirical investigations that reveal career engagement factors across different career development stages.

In only a very few places, Neubert, Mainert, Kretzschmar, & Greiff (2015) mention the role of communication and coordination among team members in collaborative problem solving. Although complex and collaborative problem solving is indeed an imperative for team and organizational success in the 21st century, it is easier said than done. Collaborative problem solving is critically dependent on the communication and interaction skills of the team members and of the team leader. The intent of this commentary is to shine a light on the critical role of interpersonal and communication skills in complex and collaborative problem solving.

The text deals with the rituals of passage, granting and approval accompanying entering adulthood. These considerations refer to both theoretical issues, taking into account the typology of rituals proposed by Pierre Bourdieu, and to selected results of own research (quantitative and qualitative) carried out at the end of the first decade of the 21st century among high school graduates of the Świętokrzyskie region. The ritual practices that are still important for young people (confirmation, "eighteenth" and high school graduation) were taken into account, although the manner of their celebration and the functions performed are subject to more or less significant transformations.

One critical measurement of success in workplaces is the abilities of graduates in applying the knowledge, skills and values into the needs of their job. This study was conducted to seek the gap of soft skills of Tra Vinh  University students compared to labour-market standard. Moreover, the importance of soft skills is also acknowledged, namely critical thinking, problem-solving,  selflearning, work-management skills and teamwork as well as communication skills which need to beprioritized equipped for any kinds of workplaces. Nonetheless, the aforementioned skill gap is significantly remarkable, especially regarding the communication skills.
