In this paper, the results of an experimental analysis regarding beam-to-column joints equipped with friction dampers is presented. Even though the overall concept is not new, the connection structural detail and the friction pad material are different from previous proposals. In particular, the beam is connected to the column with a classical fixed T-stub fastening the upper flange and a friction damper located at the beam lower flange. The friction damper is composed of a stack of steel plates conceived to assure symmetrical friction. The friction pads are made of steel plates coated with thermally sprayed aluminium. The friction damper is designed in order to slide for a force level equal to or lower than the ratio between the nominal flexural resistance of the connected beam and the lever arm, i.e. the distance between the top T-stub and the friction damper. In this way, it is possible to obtain connections able to dissipate the seismic input energy almost without any damage to the steel elements, provided that all the joint components are designed with sufficient over-strength with respect to the actions corresponding to the friction damper sliding force. In this paper, such approach is validated reporting the results of an experimental campaign.

Friction dampers are installed underneath the blade platforms to improve the reliability. Because of centrifugal forces the dampers are pressed onto the platforms. Due to dry friction and the relative motion between blades and dampers, energy is dissipated, which results in a reduction of blade vibration amplitudes. The geometry of the contact is in many cases like a Hertzian line contact. A three-dimensional motion of the blades results in a two-dimensional motion of one contact line of the friction dampers in the contact plane. An experiment with one friction damper between two blades is used to verify the two-dimensional contact model including microslip. By optimizing the friction dampers masses, the best damping effects are obtained. Finally, different methods are shown to calculate the envelope of a three-dimensional response of a detuned bladed disk assembly (V84.3-4th-stage turbine blade) with friction dampers.

Friction dampers have been used to reduce turbine blade vibration levels for a considerable period of time. However, optimal design of these dampers has been quite difficult due both to a lack of adequate theoretical predictions and to difficulties in conducting reliable experiments. One of the difficulties of damper weight optimisation via the experimental route has been the inevitable effects of mistuning. Also, conducting separate experiments for different damper weights involves excessive cost. Therefore, current practice in the turbomachinery industry has been to conduct so-called ‘rainbow tests’ where friction dampers with different weights are placed between blades with a predefined configuration. However, it has been observed that some rainbow test results have been difficult to interpret and have been inconclusive for determining the optimum damper weight for a given bladed-disc assembly. A new method of analysis — a combination of Harmonic Balance Method and structural modification approaches — is presented in this paper for the analysis of structures with friction interfaces and the method is applied to search for qualitative answers about the so-called ‘rainbow tests’ in turbomachinery applications. A simple lumped-parameter model of a bladed-disc model was used and different damper weights were modelled using friction elements with different characteristics. Resonance response levels were obtained for bladed discs with various numbers of blades under various engine-order excitations. It was found that rainbow tests, where friction dampers with different weights are used on the same bladed-disc assembly, can be used to find the optimum damper weight if the mode of vibration concerned has weak blade-to-blade coupling (the case where the disc is almost rigid and blades vibrate almost independently from each other). Otherwise, it is very difficult to draw any reliable conclusion from such expensive experiments.

This paper presents an iterative method for determining the resonant speed shift when non-linear friction dampers are included in turbine blade roots. Such a need arises when conducting response calculations for turbine blades where the unsteady aerodynamic excitation must be computed at the exact resonant speed of interest. The inclusion of friction dampers is known to raise the resonant frequencies by up to 20% from the standard assembly frequencies. The iterative procedure uses a viscous, time-accurate flow representation for determining the aerodynamic forcing, a look-up table for evaluating the aerodynamic boundary conditions at any speed, and a time-domain friction damping module for resonance tracking. The methodology was applied to an HP turbine rotor test case where the resonances of interest were due to the 1T and 2F blade modes under 40 engine-order excitation. The forced response computations were conducted using a multi-stage approach in order to avoid errors associated with “linking” single stage computations since the spacing between the two bladerows was relatively small. Three friction damper elements were used for each rotor blade. To improve the computational efficiency, the number of rotor blades was decreased by 2 to 90 in order to obtain a stator/rotor blade ratio of 4/9. However, the blade geometry was skewed in order to match the capacity (mass flow rate) of the components and the condition being analysed. Frequency shifts of 3.2% and 20.0% were predicted for the 1T/40EO and 2F/40EO resonances in about 3 iterations. The predicted frequency shifts and the dynamic behaviour of the friction dampers were found to be within the expected range. Furthermore, the measured and predicted blade vibration amplitudes showed a good agreement, indicating that the methodology can be applied to industrial problems.

In this study, the seismic performance of a rotational friction damper with restoring force is presented. The torsional spring friction damper consists of rotational friction pads with the heavy duty torsional springs attached on both sides of the friction damper. An analytical model and a design procedure for the damper are developed using capacity spectrum method. A parametric study is carried out to investigate the influence of the torsional spring in the response of the structure when subjected to ground motions. The seismic performances of steel structures retrofitted with the torsional spring friction damper and conventional rotational friction dampers are evaluated using fragility analysis, which shows that the structure retrofitted with the torsional spring friction damper has the smallest probability of reaching the specific limit states.

Abstract This survey provides an insight into the modeling and testing of uniaxial friction dampers. The focus is on attenuating the linear relative movement along planar surfaces for frequencies between 10 Hz and 1 kHz. An overview of the different approaches seen in the literature concerning friction damping is provided. Examples and evaluation of such dampers excited over a wide range of frequencies are presented. The information required to develop models of friction dampers is covered. To that end, different modeling approaches are presented for dry friction. Dynamic friction models with an internal state are covered, and their advantages are described. Other modeling approaches are reported for complete systems with friction dampers. Both numerical and analytical models are covered. Experimental configurations from a selection of authors are also included. Finally, a series of suggestions for the numerical modeling and experimental testing of a friction damper are given.

The growth of marine traffic in harbors, and the subsequent increase in vessel and propulsion system sizes, produces three linked problems at the harbor basin area: (i) higher erosion rates damaging docking structures; (ii) sedimentation areas reducing the total depth; (iii) resuspension of contaminated materials deposited at the seabed. The published literature demonstrates that there are no formulations for twin stern propellers to compute the maximum scouring depth. Another important limitation is the fact that the formulations proposed only use one type of maneuvering during the experimental campaign, assuming that vessels are constantly being undocked. Trying to reproduce the real arrival and departure maneuvers, 24 different tests were conducted at an experimental laboratory in a medium-scale water tank using a twin propeller model to estimate the consequences and the maximum scouring depth produced by stern propellers during the backward/docking and forward/undocking scenarios. Results confirm that the combination of backward and forward scenario differs substantially from the experiments performed so far in the literature using only an accumulative forward scenario, yielding deeper scouring holes at the harbor basin area. The results presented in this paper can be used as guidelines to estimate the effects of regular vessels at their particular docking location.

Based on the characteristics of series compensation platform structure, a method of installing modified Pall-typed friction dampers for seismic passive control was proposed. Compared with the conventional , the modified Pall-typed friction damper has the same effect on energy dissipation, and it is superior in imposing pretension at both ends and saving friction materials. The equations of relation between brace displacement and internal force of the modified Pall-typed friction damper were derived. Besides, the time-history analysis method for seismic responses of series compensation platform structures with modified Pall-typed friction dampers was established, and a sine amplitude-modulation wave train was applied to analyzing the dynamic responses of these structures. The results show that, the displacement of the series compensation platform structures with modified Pall-typed friction dampers decrease to some extent. The seismic control is effective.

EUROFER97 steel plates for nuclear fusion applications are usually manufactured by hot rolling and subsequent heat treatments: (1) austenitization at 980 °C for 30 min, (2) rapid cooling and (3) tempering at 760 °C for 90 min. An extended experimental campaign was carried out with the scope of improving the strength of the steel without a loss of ductility. Forty groups of samples were prepared by combining cold rolling with five cold reduction ratios (20, 40, 50, 60 and 80%) and heat treatments at eight different temperatures in the range 400–750 °C (steps of 50 °C). This work reports preliminary results regarding the microstructure and mechanical properties of all the cold-rolled samples and the effects of heat treatments on the samples deformed with the greater CR ratio (80%). The strength of deformed samples decreased as heat treatment temperature increased and the change was more pronounced in the samples cold-rolled with greater CR ratios. After heat treatments at temperature up to 600 °C yield stress (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of samples deformed with CR ratio of 80% were significantly larger than those of standard EUROFER97 but ductility was lower. On the contrary, the treatment at 650 °C produced a fully recrystallized structure with sub-micrometric grains which guarantees higher strength and comparable ductility. The work demonstrated that EUROFER97 steel can be strengthened without compromising its ductility; the most effective process parameters will be identified by completing the analyses on all the prepared samples.
