Positive social connections are integral to people’s experience of meaning in their lives. As such, social isolation can make life seem meaningless. Chan, Michalak, and Ybarra (2019, Journal of Personality) provided evidence that religious beliefs (not just participation in corporate religious life) can provide an alternative source of meaning for people who feel socially isolated. We tested whether this phenomenon was specific to (a) intrinsic vs. extrinsic orientations toward religion, and (b) experiencing meaning in one’s life at present vs. actively searching for meaning. In a sample of undergraduates, high levels of intrinsic—but not extrinsic—religiosity attenuated the relationship between social disconnection and decreased meaning in life. Moreover, this attenuation was specific to felt presence of meaning in life, rather than active search for meaning. These results corroborate and expand Chan et al.’s findings and suggest that future research should explore mechanisms by which religious beliefs themselves serve meaning-making functions.

Creating a meaning system is fundamental to human adaptation. This article reviews how the emotion of awe, characterized with perceived vastness and the need for accommodation, plays a crucial role in meaning making. Empirical evidence suggests that the experience of awe alters how people construe the world, the self, and the relationship between them, in finding meaning in life. Directions for future research are discussed by focusing on how the dynamic process of meaning making through awe would be constrained by cultural meaning systems and how sharing awe experiences with others, in turn, would contribute to collective meaning making processes.

The purpose of this meta-analysis study is to examine the correlations between the Dimensions of Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ) and frequently examined outcomes including organizational performance and employee attitudes. Positive relationships were found between the DLOQ and organizational performance (e.g., financial, knowledge, and innovative performance) and employee attitudes (e.g., organizational commitment and job satisfaction) and the sub-dimensions (e.g., affective, continuance, and normative commitment), with a notable exception of a negative relationship between the DLOQ and turnover. Because the DLOQ has been used in many countries over the years, this study also examined the influence of national culture on the outcomes. Power distance moderated the relationship between the learning organization and overall organizational performance. Our meta-analytic review makes substantive contributions to the literature on the learning organization concept and the study of national culture as a significant moderator. Implications of these findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.

This study examined both the mediation effects of self-esteem and meaning in life for the relationship between gratitude and suicidal ideation in late adolescence. A total of 276 Taiwanese university students completed measures of gratitude, self-esteem, meaning in life, and suicidal ideation. Path analyses indicated that self-esteem and meaning in life acted as full mediators of the association between gratitude and suicidal ideation. The identified model also revealed a significant path from gratitude through self-esteem and meaning in life to suicidal ideation. A multigroup analysis found that the paths did not differ by genders. Implications for future research and limitations of the present findings are discussed.

Purpose – This study aims to evaluate both intelligence and job satisfaction of workers in the USA and China. Each topic will be studied individually, first, to determine the relationship between intelligence and job satisfaction. The statistics between China and the USA will then be compared and contrasted to assess how different cultures will affect emotional intelligence and job satisfaction of those in the workforce. Design/methodology/approach – A review of the empirical studies on intelligence and job satisfaction was performed and used to develop a model to guide future research. Findings – There is a negative relationship between intelligence and job satisfaction in the USA, but no studies have been done to compare both constructs cross-culturally. Research limitations/implications – The proposed study can be used to gain an understanding of the relationship between intelligence and job satisfaction across different cultures. Practical implications – The link between job satisfaction and intelligence can be used by employers to determine information about other aspects of their business, such as turnover rates of productive employees. Originality/value – Although there has been some research on the relation between intelligence and job satisfaction, notably by Ganzach (1998), very little has been done across cultures.

This paper aims at investigating the direct and interactive effect of perception of organizational politics (POP) and impression management on organizational citizenship behavior and job burnout. We proposed after review of literature that POP is negatively related to organizational citizenship behavior and is positively related to job burnout. We also hypothesized that impression management weakens both these relationships. Data was collected from 151 teachers of Pakistan through questionnaires consisting of standardized scales. Moderated regression analysis was used to analyze the data. Our findings showed a significant negative relationship between POP and organizational citizenship behavior and a significant positive relationship between POP and job burnout. It was also confirmed that impression management negatively moderates the relationship between POP and organizational citizenship behavior while no moderating effect of impression management was found in the relationship between organizational politics and job burnout. Limitations of the study along with directions for future research and implications for organizational managers have been discussed.

This study critically reviewed literature on the relationship between working capital management and earnings management. The specific objectives of the study included determination of documented evidence on; the relationship between working capital management and earnings management, the existence of target working capital management level and target earnings management level and knowledge gaps between the two study variables. Findings on the first objective were conflicting with some researchers establishing a positive relationship, others a negative relationship whereas others were non-conclusive. Findings on the second objective were also conflicting. The divergence in findings were attributed to differences in conceptual, methodological and contextual setups with inconsistencies in operationalization of the study variables playing a pivotal role. The study revealed a biased inclination towards usage of accounting accruals as proxies for earnings management with no consideration for non-accounting accruals like real earnings managements. The study also identified lack of related studies in frontier economies as a potential research gap paving way for future related studies with expanded scope. The study further recommended future research on determination of an optimal working capital level that minimizes real earnings management.

The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship and effect of  job variables rotation, job performance and organizational commitment among the employees working in banking sector in Pakistan. Self-administrated questionnaire was distributed by selecting a convenient sampling the data collected were 435 from the employees in the banks. The data were analyzed with the help of Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings of the study revealed that a positive relationship was found between job rotation, job performance and organizational commitment among the employees, whereas negative relationship was found between job performance and organizational commitment. The study results are useful for the bankers, employees’ and managers. The study also provided the limitations and recommendations for future research.

A growing line of research has shown that individuals can regulate emotional biases in risky judgment and decision-making processes through cognitive reappraisal. In the present study, we focus on a specific tactic of reappraisal known as distancing. Drawing on appraisal theories of emotion and the emotion regulation literature, we examine how distancing moderates the relationship between fear and risk taking and anger and risk taking. In three pre-registered studies (Ntotal = 1,483), participants completed various risky judgment and decision-making tasks. Replicating previous results, Study 1 revealed a negative relationship between fear and risk taking and a positive relationship between anger and risk taking at low levels of distancing. Study 2 replicated the interaction between fear and distancing but found no interaction between anger and distancing. Interestingly, at high levels of distancing, we observed a reversal of the relationship between fear and risk taking in both Study 1 and 2. Study 3 manipulated emotion and distancing by asking participants to reflect on current fear-related and anger-related stressors from an immersed or distanced perspective. Study 3 found no main effect of emotion nor any evidence of a moderating role of distancing. However, exploratory analysis revealed a main effect of distancing on optimistic risk estimation, which was mediated by a reduction in self-reported fear. Overall, the findings suggest that distancing can help regulate the influence of incidental fear on risk taking and risk estimation. We discuss implications and suggestions for future research.

Despite research on religion and marriage, little is known about the role of religion in the relationships of nonmarried couples. This study addresses two questions: (a) Do various dimensions of religious involvement—shared religious beliefs, affiliation and attendance, and theistic sanctification—influence the relationship satisfaction and marital expectations of dating and cohabiting individuals? (b) Is the association mediated by positive and negative relationship behaviors by the respondent and/or partner? We investigate these questions using the National Survey of Religion and Family Life, a nationwide sample of working-age adults, aged 18 to 59 years ( n = 468) with oversamples of African Americans and Latinos. Various dimensions of religious involvement are positively associated with the relationship satisfaction and expectations to marry among nonmarried individuals. Positive and negative relationship behaviors slightly diminish the link between religion and (a) relationship satisfaction and (b) expectations of marriage. Several implications and promising directions for future research are discussed.

This study investigated the mediating effect of meaning in life on the relationship between personal growth initiative and subjective well-being. The sample was composed of a total of 1,899 Brazilian participants who voluntarily took part in this study by completing the study survey. Based on the results of the structural equation modeling, the relationship between personal growth initiative and subjective well-being was found to be partially mediated by the presence of meaning in life. Age was found to influence the mediation, as older participants reported greater PGI and MIL. Limitations of the study, as well as directions for future research are discussed.
