The purpose of this document is to present the Trait Truthful Communication (T-TCS) scale, to describe its conceptual foundation, and to provide initial evidence of its psychometric quality. This document is brief and is intended for researchers who are considering using the T-TCS scale in their own work. At some point, the material summarized briefly in this document will (hopefully) be presented in detail in a full article.

Background Adequate communication skills in healthcare professionals are one of the key elements required for achieving high-quality healthcare. Thus, measurement instruments able to assess the dimensions related to these skills, including attitudes towards communication, are useful and convenient tools. Objectives To (a) cross-culturally adapt and validate a scale to measure attitudes towards communication in a sample of nursing students in the Spanish environment; (b) describe the perceived attitudes of nursing degree students towards communication. Methods We conducted an instrumental study. First, we adapted the scale by applying a standardised linguistic validation procedure. After that, we determined its structural equivalence and evaluated its psychometric properties. Participants A total of 255 students participated; their average age was 22.66 years (SD = 4.75) and 82% were female. Results The internal consistency of the scale was adequate (0.75), and the data fit well with the model (CFI = 0.99; TLI = 0.99; RMSEA = .01 95% CI [.00–.05]). The overall instrument score poorly correlated with the self-efficacy in communication skills variable. Conclusions The attitudes towards communication scores for these nursing students were high. The Spanish version of the Attitudes Towards Health Communication scale had adequate psychometric properties and this tool could quickly and easily be applied to assess the attitudes of health profession students.

Chapter 2 discusses the purpose of school psychology as being significantly different from that of other professional psychology specialties, which provides the field with a range of opportunities while at the same time laying a clear parameter outlining the boundaries of the specialty. It also examines the conceptual basis of the specialty, showing it as the necessary glue that holds together the profession’s judgments about the application of theory and empirical data to the practice of school psychology. It covers how school psychology has a clear purpose distinct from other areas of professional psychology, a signature conceptual foundation, and a theoretically integrated basis that is informed by the empirical literature for the practice of school psychology, and how these features define the distinct specialty of school psychology within professional psychology.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the psychometric properties of the Family Communication Scale (FCS) in a sample of 491 students at a private university in Lima, Peru, aged between 16 and 28 years (χ. = 20.31, <em>SD </em>= 3.08). The sample was divided into two proportional groups. In the first, an exploratory factor analysis was made: χ. (45) = 966.8, <em>p </em>&lt; .000, <em>n </em>= 246; extracting one dimension by the parallel analysis method, <em>GFI </em>= .99, <em>RMCR </em>= .06. Later, in the second group, a confirmatory factor analysis was conducted: χ. = 80.31; χ./<em>d.f</em>. = 2.36; <em>CFI </em>= 1.00; <em>GFI </em>= .995; <em>AGFI </em>= .992; <em>RMSEA </em>= .000; <em>RMR </em>= .050 (<em>n </em>= 245), suitably adjusted to a single dimension. Model errors and gender invariance were analyzed and finally a reliability alpha was established with different estimators, obtaining a high level of internal consistency. We conclude that the FCS presents adequate psychometric properties that support its use as an assessment tool for family communication in college.</p>

This paper presents an analysis of the deep language factors that predetermine polysemy of English adjectives denoting moral and mental qualities of human beings. In line with a well-established point of view in cognitive linguistics, this study treats the semantics of a word as a two-level phenomenon possessing the semantic (external) level and the conceptual (internal) level. Given polysemy belongs to the external level, this study aims to reveal the internal language factor allowing for umbrella adjectives to develop meanings of moral and mental qualities. This is the first research that has analyzed English adjectives from this perspective; it is proposed to unearth the deep language foundation of polysemy by modeling the conceptual foundation of polysemantic adjectives, which is undertaken via analysis of their etymological data. The choice of the adjectives encoding moral and mental qualities is substantiated by the following reasons: first, these words name the major human characteristics, whose recognition and verbalization can be traced back to the Pre-Old English period; second, they denote abstract qualities unperceivable by senses but estimated due to their indirect manifestation in individuals’ judgments, conduct and activity; third, since these adjectives convey evaluation of the quality, they reflect cultural axiological standards. The findings show that the semantics of the English adjectives in question is governed by a certain set of conceptual metaphors. The commonality of the adjectives’ conceptual basis seems to be the internal language factor that accounts for polysemy, i.e. an ability for an adjective to comprise meanings of mental and moral characteristics. In addition, the results demonstrate that the unearthed concepts form oppositions, namely, LIFE - DEATH, MOTION - STILLNESS, FRIEND - FOE. The opposed concepts are endowed with the positive or negative value that appears to determine the evaluative meaning of the adjectives. Besides, the research has shown that, while participating in the formation of adjectival semantics, the concepts can demonstrate ambiguous value, which enables a concept to underlie both the positive and negative evaluative meanings of an adjective; therefore, an adjective may comprise meanings of mental and moral characteristics that are opposite in their evaluation.

Abstract Within cognitive and developmental psychology, it is commonly argued that perception is the basis for object concepts. According to this view, sensory experiences would translate into concepts thanks to the recognition, correlation and integration of physical attributes. Once attributes are integrated into general patterns, subjects would become able to parse objects into categories. In this article, we critically review the three epistemological perspectives according to which it can be claimed that object concepts depend on perception: state non-conceptualism, content non-conceptualism, and content conceptualism. We show that the three perspectives have problems that make perception inadequate as a conceptual basis. We suggest that the inquiry about the origin and development of object concepts can benefit from a pragmatic perspective that considers objects’ cultural functions as a conceptual foundation. We address this possibility from the theoretical framework of the pragmatics of the object, considering the importance of objects’ functional permanence.

An increasing body of scientific research on the nature, correlates, and effects of compassion has accrued over recent years. Expert agreement has not yet been reached on the conceptualisation of compassion for others, and existing self-report measures of compassion for others have often lacked psychometric quality and content validity. Recent publications of longer compassion measures represent significant strides towards ameliorating these issues. However, there is a need for psychometrically sound short scales for measuring compassion in time-constrained research settings. To meet this need, one can assess the psychometric qualities of existing scales in order to develop robust short adaptations of such scales. Study 1 (N = 501) empirically assessed the psychometric properties of the widely cited Compassionate Love Scale (CLS) to validate a new short scale of compassion for others (strangers) comprised of items from the CLS – the 7-item Compassion for Others Scale (COS-7). Study 2 (N = 332) addressed the absence of a German measure of compassion for others by validating a German version of the COS-7. The CLS did not display adequate model fit. Both the English and German versions of the COS-7 demonstrated adequate model fit, factor loadings, internal consistency, interpretability, convergent/divergent validity, and no floor/ceiling effects. Findings provide support for the English and German versions of the COS-7 as adequate short scales for measuring compassion for others. The German COS-7 is the first German measure of compassion for others published to date.

ObjectiveThe aim of this review was to evaluate the conceptual suitability, applicability and psychometric properties of scores used internationally to measure adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD).DesignThis was a systematic review to identify original articles that examined some aspects of the conceptual suitability, applicability or psychometric properties of the MD adherence score. Electronic searches were carried out on the international databases MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science and EMBASE (from January 1980 to 31 December 2015).Eligibility criteria for selecting studiesThe study included original articles that examined some aspects of the conceptual suitability, applicability or psychometric properties of the MD adherence score. The studies where MD adherence scores were administered but did not bring forward any evidence about their performance related to conceptual suitability, applicability or psychometric properties were excluded.Data extractionInformation relating to the scales was extracted in accordance with the quality criteria defined by the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Medical Outcomes Trust for measurement of health results and the quality criteria recommended by Terwee: (1) conceptual, (2) applicability and (3) psychometric properties. Three authors independently extracted information from eligible studies.ResultsTwenty-seven studies were identified as meeting the inclusion criteria, yielding 28 MD adherence scores. The results showed that evidence is scarce and that very few scores fulfilled the applicability parameters and psychometric quality. The scores developed by Panagiotakoset al, Bucklandet aland Sotos-Prietoet alshowed the highest levels of evidence.ConclusionsScores measuring adherence to MD are useful tools for identifying the dietary patterns of a given population. However, further information is required regarding existing scores. In addition, new instruments with greater conceptual and methodological rigour should be developed and evaluated for their psychometric properties.

Preliminary psychometric data are presented for two Chinese self-report scales that assess marital communication and conflict resolution. These scales were based on English versions of the scales but adapted to fit the local cultural context. Results showed that the 11-item Marital Communication Scale and the 8-item Chinese Ineffective Arguing Scale produced scores that were internally consistent. Their correlations with the Kansas Marital Satisfaction Scale were high and significant. There was moderate evidence to support that the scales distinguished between respondents with and without marital problems.
