Background: Pencil grip can be defined via detailed descriptions of the variables constituting the grip and it commences in the preschool years with writing instruments and  therefore relevant to graphologists, forensic medicine and anthropology. The purpose of this investigation was to describe the diversity of pencil grip patterns among  students and skilled workers in Delta State, Nigeria. The research also aimed at determining the effects of sociodemographic factors, handedness, and handwriting speed on pencil grip patters. Methods: Stratified random sampling was employed in this cross sectional observational study. Five hundred and fourty three volunteers between the ages of 11-77 years were investigated. Students were observed while writing from their textbooks and skilled workers were observed writing from any available news paper. Photograph of the writing hand was captured with the digital canon camera.  The data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 20. Kruska wallis test was used to establish relationship between pencil grip patterns and sociodemographic factors. Handwriting speed was determined by a speed score (letters per minute) and timed for 60 secounds for each participant. A self administered questionnaire was used to obtain data on sociodemographic factors. Results: This investigation demonstrates that gender had a significant effect on pencil grip patterns among secondary students (p<0.05)(K.W=7.54. df=1. p=0.01). Further observation showed that age and profession had a significant effect on pencil grip patterns among skilled workers at p<0.05 (K.W= 43.09,134.69 ,df=3,3, p=0.00,0.00). Conclusions: Findings from this investigation present the dynamic tripod grip as the most predominant grip pattern in the studied population.

Abstract Objective: The aims of the study were: (i) to estimate the frequency of legume consumption in a study sample from Poland; (ii) to assess relationships between frequency of legume consumption and sociodemographic factors, health status and health-related variables and (iii) to describe the sociodemographic and health-related profiles of ‘frequent’, ‘rare’ and ‘never legume consumers’. Design: A cross-sectional study with a self-administered questionnaire was conducted. χ2 test compared the distribution of sociodemographic, health status and health-related variables in accordance with frequency of legume consumption. Multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) revealed the sociodemographic and health-related profiles of ‘frequent’, ‘rare’ and ‘never legume consumers’. Setting: Adult individuals from Poland. Participants: The present study included 1135 adults aged 18–80 years. Results: Only 22·8 % of all participants declared frequent legume consumption. The prevalence of ‘rare’ and ‘never consumers’ was 72·1 and 5·1 %, respectively. The MCA highlighted strong correspondence of sociodemographic factors, health status and health-related variables with the frequency of legume consumption. Conclusions: Low frequency of legume consumption in a study sample of adults from Poland was strongly associated with male sex, low educational level, physical work, living in villages and small cities, and living with more than one co-resident; low legume consumption was also associated with sedentary lifestyle, no disease prevalence and no dietary supplementation.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the recognition of elder abuse (EA) among nursing undergraduates in China and determine whether recognition is related to sociodemographic factors and education. We conducted a cross-sectional study with stratified random sampling, using the Caregiving Scenario Questionnaire of Chinese version (CSQ-CV). Questionnaires were disseminated to 343 nursing undergraduates ranged from 1st to 4th year at Fujian Medical University, China. The content validity of CSQ-CV is 0.97. 340 students (99.1%) effectively responded. 223(65.6%) of them identified trapping someone in an armchair; 108(31.8%) locking someone alone; and 3(0.9%) accepting someone was not clean as abusive. The majority correctly identified four out of five non-abusive (NA) items, while 210(61.8%) incorrectly identified camouflaging the door to prevent wondering outdoors. With respect to potential-abusive (PA) items, less than half of the students made right judgements. Only 30(8.8%) correctly identified not taking her to family gatherings; 46(13.5%) telling her only having breakfast after bathing; and 50(14.7%) hiding tablets in someone’s cereal or tea. Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests indicated no significance related to correct recognition of the three abusive items with sociodemographic factors and education. The students who were female, caring older adults at home or had detected EA cases were more likely to correctly recognize NA items (Z=-2.428,P=0.015;Z=-2.028,P=0.043;Z=-2.534,P=0.011). Besides, female students got higher scores of CSQ-CV (Z=-2.000, P=0.045). Nursing undergraduates’ recognition of EA, especially in neglect and PA are still at a low level in China. Education about EA in nursing undergraduates’ curriculum and training program should be encouraged.

Smoking is an issue that has spread around the world throughout the years. The majority of smokers have the intention to quit smoking, but due to some factors, it may prevent their intention. Research and interventions have been done in many countries to decrease the smoking prevalence. This cross-sectional study aimed to find out the associations of knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) towards smoking and to identify the factors associated with knowledge and attitude towards smoking, in priority to sociodemographic factors among the International Islamic University Malaysia Kuantan (IIUMK) communities, including between students and workers. One hundred fifteen respondents of students and workers from IIUMK were investigated with a self-administered questionnaire starting from 10-01-2014 to 10-02-2014. The data were analysed using SPSS software. Respondents had good knowledge and practice, and moderate attitude towards smoking. There was weak positive correlation between knowledge with attitude (r=+0.193, p=0.038) and practice (r=+0.206, p=0.028), also moderate correlation between attitude and practice towards smoking (r=+0.626, p<0.001). There was no factor found to be associated with knowledge, but significant association was found between attitude towards smoking with gender (p<0.001), education level (p=0.016) and smoking status (p<0.001). Although, the mean values of KAP levels were higher for workers, but it was not statistically significant as compared to the students. These study findings suggested that the main obligation are more for students to improve their KAP level towards smoking as they are fresh generation who will educate and lead the upcoming generation of Malaysia.

Abstract Background: There has been a sustained increase in physiology knowledge in the last century that created a growing problem for educationalists and we lack general agreement on the educational content of the physiology course for medical students. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study that involved physiology teachers with different categories of academic ranking including associate professors, assistant professors, and lecturers who were working at physiology departments in different faculties of medicine on the date of the study. A standardized self-administered questionnaire was developed, pre-tested, and used for data collection from the study population. The collected data was analyzed by the use of computerized statistical package Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0.Results: The respondents were asked to determine the importance of the topics using three criteria: frequency of encounter, burden, and seriousness, then based on the total score; topics were divided into core (need to know), recommended (good to know), proposed (nice to know). All the contents of physiology subjects were listed and topics were prioritized accordingly. Finally, we established a list of 53 core (need to know) topics. There was no significant correlation found between the current academic status of the participants and Important of the topics. These findings provided evidence of the presence of general agreement among physiologists on the core physiology educational content that need to be taught to medical students.

Introduction: The implementation of Therapeutic Patient Education (TPE) remains a challenge. An exploratory study highlighted two tendencies among practitioners of TPE, which could hamper this implementation: an oscillation between identities (as caregivers versus as educators) and an inclination towards subjective psychological health objectives. Objectives: To verify whether these tendencies can be observed among an informed audience in TPE. Next, to explore the variables associated with one or other of these tendencies. Method: A quantitative cross-sectional survey by a self-administered questionnaire was carried out among 90 French-speaking healthcare professionals. Statistical analyses (chi-square, logistic regression) were then conducted. Results: Sixty percent of respondents displayed identity oscillation, which was found to be linked to task oscillation, patient curability, scepticism towards medicine and practising in France. Fifty-six percent pursued subjective psychological health objectives, which was found to be associated with health behaviour objectives and a locus of power in the healthcare relationship distinct from those seen in the pre-existing health models (biomedical, global). This tendency seems to constitute an alternative model of TPE. Discussion & conclusion: Identity oscillation and subjective psychological health objectives can be both observed. This study stresses the need to deliberate on the form(s) of TPE that is/are desired.

Using as the example of the pilgrimage to Sabarimala (Kerala, South India), I propose here to explore the links existing between sources, research hypothesis and research theory in social sciences. The choice of research materials in the process of investigation, sources of knowledge about the studied object, is not mere random sampling; it is processed in accordance with the questions of the researcher. It inevitably assumes a selective dimension. After a critical reading of the sources used by Indian studies, I will highlight on the connections between the sources and the methodological tools on the one hand, and the major research hypothesis about pilgrimage on the other. The links between the data taken from the field and the legitimacy of scientific discourse on India will be examined at the end before providing some keys for the interpretation of Sabarimala phenomenon in South India during the contemporary period.
