Present study was conducted to explore and document the non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in the Sagarmatha National Park (SNP) Nepal Himalaya, and to assess their conservation status. The field data was collected from June 21 to July 15, 2004. Primary information of NTFPs was based on Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) which included field observation, interviews and focus group discussion. Altogether 103 species of NTFPs belonging to 40 families and 74 genera, used for food, firewood, fodder, buildings construction, incense, and medicines were recorded from the study area. Out of them, 21 species were found to be dominant, 29 species abundant, 35 species common, 14 not so common and 4 species rare. Furthermore, 17 species of lichens belonging to six families and eight genera were also recorded. Impact on the vegetation was mostly due to the disturbance by tourism, animal grazing, building of houses, fuel wood and timber collection. Ecological study of the representative NTFPs showed that number of medicinal plants was comparatively low in all the areas investigated. Arenaria sp., Rhododendron sp., Juniperus sp., Abies spectabilis., Pinus wallichiana., Betula utilis, Lyonia ovalifolia., Arundinaria sp., Zanthoxylum armatum., Dactylorhiza hatagirea, Neopicrorhiza scrophulariiflora, Ferns, Mushrooms, etc. have been found to be directly or indirectly affected by tourists and guides/porters. Abstract Background Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are important resources for sustenance of rural communities; a systematic planning to manage diverse NTFPs may immensely contribute to food and livelihood security of forest dwellers. Considering this, the present study has been undertaken in the Himachal Pradesh state in north India. It aims to provide detailed information on diversity, distribution, use pattern, and conservation status of selected NTFPs that have market potential, and suggest a possible way for their sustained management and possible role in livelihood upgradation of dependent communities. Methodology An inventory of NTFP species was prepared by collecting secondary information from published scientific studies in journals, books, and other periodicals as well as species being traded as per Forest department records. Search on various online databases were also used (Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed, ISI Web of Science) using specific search terms such as “non-timber forest products,” “NTFPs,” “medicinal plants,” “wild edible plants,” and “Himachal Pradesh,” “Western Himalaya,” and “Northwest Himalaya.” A list of potential NTFPs was prepared having market value. To evaluate the relative usefulness of different species, a quantitative valuation was also used by calculating various indices, such as use value (UV), relative frequency of citation (RFC), relative importance index (RI), cultural importance index (CI), and cultural value (CV). Results A total of 811 species have been screened that has significant potential for the State, and categorized in 18 groups as per their use. The family use value was highest for Asteraceae (FUV = 76.75). Among plant parts used, whole plants, roots (including rhizomes and tubers), leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, stems, and barks were used by the forest dwellers. Maximum NTFPs were collected from the warm temperate zone, followed by the temperate, sub-alpine, sub-tropical, and alpine zones. Sixty-one percent of species had medicinal importance, followed by species used for food and fodder purposes. Although species richness of medicinal plants decreased with altitude, however, most plants extracted from high altitudes were high-value species fetching better income. As many as 125 NTFPs were identified under the diverse level of threats according to IUCN criteria and as per the local stakeholders’ perceptions. Conclusion High dependence on NTFPs by poor and marginal communities for domestic needs as well as market demand of selected species leads to create excessive pressure on them. Unfortunately, the state agencies are not having any robust conservation plan for NTFPs. For long-term management of NTFPs sector, a species-specific conservation strategy, proper harvesting protocol, cultivation practices, the supply of quality planting material, product development and diversification, value chain development, and ensured market is greatly desired. This will not only lead to conserving NTFPs resources in their natural habitats but also lead a sustainable livelihood generation for forest dwellers.

Abstract Background: Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) do have significant role as local source for medicine, fiber, forage and sustenance and offer income opportunities for poverty mitigation mainly in rural families. Sustainable use of NTFPs is imperative so, this study was focused on the documentation of plant species used for NTFPs and their conservation status in Sera forest. Methods: The study applied a combination of plant ecological and ethnobotanical methods. Ethnobotanical data were gathered through semi-structured questionnaires and interviews which involved 230 (206 randomly sampled general and 24 purposively selected key informants); group discussion, guided field walk and market survey. Data were analyzed and presented using analytical methods of ethnobotany including descriptive statistics, informant consensus factor (ICF) and ranking. Results: A total of 137 plant species belonging to 49 families used as a source of NTFPs were documented from the study area. In addition, 11 major use categories of the NTFPs were identified. Out of these, medicine, fire wood and charcoal making and construction materials were the most dominant uses requiring large volume of NTFPs in the study area. The output of direct matrix ranking of plant species used for multipurpose revealed - Hagenia abyssinica ranked first followed by Olea europaea ssp cuspidata, Grewia mollis, Croton macrostachyus, Ximenia americana and Carissa spinarum. Hence, local communities of the study area possess rich potential indigenous knowledge that helped to use their natural resources for sustainable livelihood. Conclusions: Sera forest is rich in NTFPs bearing plants and associated indigenous conservation knowledge. However, nowadays illegal timber extractions, grazing, over harvesting NTFPs, farm expansion and fire hazards were found to be threatening of the plant resources in the study area. Therefore, awareness creation on complementary conservation (in-situ and ex-situ) and sustainable use of plant resources of the area for higher livelihood outcomes with lower environmental impacts is desirable.

Forest products are materials gotten from forest, for the direct consumption or commercial use such as timber and non-timber forest products. The destruction of forest in Andoni due to the exploration and consumption of forest products are done without determining the values of these products that could have been lost. This study attempts to determine the value of identified forest products information gathered through the use of questionnaire focus group discussion, field survey and other related materials. The simple percentage analysis shows that forest products have a lot of value to the people; hence community dwellers involved in it. Conclusively, forest product were identified and categorized into wildlife species (wild animal) and plant species which usefulness were been influenced by socio-external factor, economical factor and livelihood security factor. The economic value of forest product in a study area is N532,351,300.00 while the expected value is N865,648,300.00. Therefore, the government at all levels should provide indiscriminate exploitation of premature forest product policy on forest management that are appropriate. These should be made to effectively reflect and enhance forest protection and improvement of livelihood of the people.

Non-timber forest products were potential assets to generate foreign exchange. Some types of which had good prospects and were in demand in the world of trade were rattan, gondorukem, eucalyptus and cassava. The purpose of this study was to determine the rattan types diversity in Rompo Village, Lore Lindu National Park. The study was conducted in December 2018 to March 2019. This research used the "survey" method by making a plot measuring 20 m x 20 m along to 1000 m. The distance between one track to another was to 200 m. The results showed that the type of Lambang Rattan (Calamus ornatus var celebicus Becc) had the highest density of 563.75 individuals/ha, then Pai Rattan (Calamus koordersianus Becc) 229 individuals/ha, Batang Rattan (Calamus zollingeri Becc) 183 individuals/ha, Ibo Rattan (Calamus ahlidurii) 52 individuals/ha, Rattan Tohiti Botol (Calamus sp) 46.25 individuals/ha, Pute Rattan (Calamus leiocaulis Becc ex. Heyne) 11.75 individuals/ha, Karuku Rattan (Calamus macrosphaerica Becc) 10 individuals/ha and the smallest was the type of Tohiti Wulo Rattan (Calamus sp) 9.75 individuals/ha. Rattan which had the highest Importance Value Index was the Lambang Rattan (Calamus ornatus var celebicus Becc) with an Importance Value Index value of 72.14% while the rattan that had the lowest Importance Value Index was Tohiti Wulo Rattan (Calamus sp) with an INP value of 5.02%. The level of species diversity (H ') of the rattan types found in the research location was classified as moderate with an H value of 1.75. The higher the area where the rattan is grown, the fewer types of rattan that can grow and only small rattan can grow on high ground, especially Tohiti rattan and large rattan cannot be found any more like Lambang rattan.

Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) consist of goods of biological origin other than wood, derived from forests, other wooded land and trees outside forests. The importance of NTFPs for sustaining rural livelihoods, fostering rural poverty alleviation, enhancing biodiversity conservation, and facilitating rural economic growth is well known in Nepal. In spite of these facts, NTFPs have not received the sustained and systematic support. With the gradual rise in population, unsustainable harvesting and depletion of resources, sustainable management of NTFPs has become a challenge. Similarly, the increasing global demand of NTFPs leads to over-exploitation of these resources that further leads to dwindling and adversely affecting the biodiversity. In this context, this paper intends to explore and analyze the conservation status, prospects and challenges for efficient and sustainable management of NTFPs in the context of Nepal.

Abstrak: Perkebunan damar yang berada di Kabupaten Pesisir Barat ini adalah perkebunan rakyat yang diusahakan secara turun-temurun, bahkan ada yang mencapai usia 70 tahun dan kawasan Taman Nasional Bukit Barisan Selatan (TNBBS). Menurut Dinas Perindustrian Lampung Barat di Krui terdapat sekitar 1.750.000 pohon damar produktif dengan luas 17.500 ha. Getah damar menjadi komoditas unggulan Lampung dari Hasil Hutan Bukan Kayu (HHBK). Budidaya damar punya dua manfaat sekaligus yaitu pelestarian hutan dan ekonomi. Getah damar mata kucing banyak digunakan untuk bahan emulsi (campuran) pewarna, cat, tinta, aromatik untuk makanan, bahkan juga untuk kosmetik dan lain sebagainya. Metode yang digunakan dalam artikel ini adalah studi dokumentasi dengan menelaah atau mengkaji beberapa teori dan artikel yang berhubungan dengan Damar Mata Kucing. Pihak masyarakat sangat menantikan inovasi dari berbagai pihak yang melibatkan masyarakat dan menguntungkan daya jual damar. Inovasi yang saat ini diharapkan oleh petani adalah alat pengolah damar menjadi bahan setengah jadi sehingga harga jual akan lebih tinggi yang berdampak kepada pendapatan masyarakat. Optimalisasi obyek wisata Hutan damar perlu ditingkatkan dengan memberikan papan informasi edukatif, sejarah dan gambar penunjang lainnya.   Abstract: This damar plantation in Pesisir Barat Regency is a community plantation that has been cultivated from generation to generation, some even reached the age of 70 and the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (TNBBS) area. According to the West Lampung Industry Service in Krui there are about 1,750,000 productive resin trees covering an area of ​​17,500 ha. Dammar sap is Lampung's leading commodity from Non-Timber Forest Products (HHBK). The cultivation of resin has two benefits, namely forest conservation and the economy. Cat's eye resin is widely used for emulsion (mixture) of dyes, paints, inks, aromatics for food, even for cosmetics and so on. The method used in this article is a documentary study by examining or examining several theories and articles related to cat's eye resin. The community is looking forward to innovations from various parties that involve the community and benefit the selling power of resin. The innovation that is currently expected by farmers is a means of processing resin into semi-finished materials so that the selling price will be higher which will have an impact on people's income. Optimization of the Damar Forest tourism object needs to be improved by providing educational information boards, history and other supporting images.

[Bahasa]: Kawasan Hutan Pendidikan Senaru atau disebut juga dengan Kawasan Hutan dengan Tujuan Khusus (KHDTK) Senaru memiliki potensi multi fungsi yang dapat memberikan manfaat ekonomi, lingkungan, pendidikan dan sosial bagi umat manusia. Manfaat tersebut diantaranya berasal dari Hasil Hutan Kayu (HHK) dan Hasil Hutan Bukan Kayu. Selain manfaat yang bersumber dari HHK dan HHBK terdapat juga manfaat jasa lingkungan seperti wisata alam dan pendidikan. Dalam perjalanannya KHDTK Senaru dimanfaatkan sebagai tempat wisata bagi masyarakat baik lokal, nasional maupun internasional yang datang ke KHDTK Senaru untuk menikmati pemandang alamnya atau melewati KHDTK untuk melanjutkan perjalanan mereka menuju puncak Gunung Rinjani. Kondisi ini tentunya merupakan perkembangan yang positif bagi KHDTK Senaru dan pengelola, dalam melakukan pengembangan wisata kedepannya. Permasalahan yang terjadi pada saat ini yaitu belum maskimalnya informasi terkait sumberdaya hutan yang ada pada KHDTK Senaru untuk menunjang wisata edukasi bagi pengunjung maupun masyarakat sekitar terkait dengan alam sekitar, terutama pengenalan jenis vegetasi yang terdapat disepanjang jalur wisata. Sehingga tujuan dilaksanakannya kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah: (1) untuk menyediakan informasi vegetasi yang terdapat pada jalur wisata, (2). menyediakan herbarium vegetasi yang ada sepanjang jalur dan (3) menyediakan papan informasi terkait vegetasi pada jalur wisata. Motode yang digunakan adalah observasi, focus group discussion (FGD), dan sosialisasi. Adapun hasil yang diperoleh adalah sebagai berikut: (1) masyarakat memiliki data terkait jenis-jenis vegetasi yang terdapat pada jalur-jalur wisata, (2) tersedianya herbarium jenis-jenis vegetasi yang ada di sepanjang jalur (3) tersedianya papan informasi terkait jenis-jenis vegetasi yang ada di sepanjang jalur. Kata Kunci: KHDTK; Senaru; wisata edukasi; pengenalan jenis vegetasi [English]: Senaru Educational Forest or also known as Forest Area with Special Purposes (KHDTK) has a multi-functional potency that can provide economic, environmental, educational, and social benefits for people. The benefits are derived from Timber Forest Products (HHK) and Non-Timber Forest Products (HHBK). In addition, there are also benefits from environmental services such as natural tourism and education. KHDTK Senaru is used as a tourist destination ranging from local, national and international tourists who came to enjoy its natural views or pass through to the summit of Mount Rinjani. This condition is certainly a positive development for KHDTK Senaru and the management, in carrying out tourism development in the future. The current problem is the lack of information regarding the forest resources available at the KHDTK Senaru to support educational tourism and the local communities regarding the natural environment, especially the introduction of vegetation species along the tracks. Thus, the aims of this community service program are (1) to provide information on vegetation available along the tourist track, (2) to provide herbariums for vegetation along the tourist track, and (3) to provide information boards related to vegetation available on the tourist track. The methods used are observation, focus group discussion (FGD), and socialization. The results obtained after the program are as follows: (1) the local communities have database regarding list of vegetation species available along the tourist tracks, (2) the availability of herbariums of vegetation on the tourist track, and (3) the availability of information boards of vegetation at the tourist track. The study investigated evaluation of economic impact of non-timber forest products collections in Arakanga forest reserve in Ogun State. Purposive sampling was used to select four villages around the reserve, representing 10% sampling intensity in the study area. A total of 98 questionnaires were administered. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and budgetary analysis. Majority of respondents were within the age group of40-49 years (35.7%) and mostly were female(51%),40.8% had no formal education while 33.7% had primary education and were mostly married(57.1%). Identified NTFPs includes fuelwood, mushroom, charcoal and honey. The result on profitability showed that fuel-wood had the highest net profit (₦10,916.85) among the NTFPs found in the study area. Constraints faced NTFPs were price fluctuation (58.2%), low demand (14.3%) and inadequate credit facilities (11.2%) and host of others. It was recommended that NTFPs should be introduced to youth in orderto reduce the level of unemployment and government should repaired the road network to the forest for easy accessibility for NTFPs operation.
