Abstract Slamming events due to wave impact on the underside of decks might lead to severe and potentially harmful local and/or global loads in offshore structures. The strong nonlinearities during the impact require a robust method for accessing the loads and hinder the use of analytical models. The use of computation fluid dynamics (CFD) is an interesting alternative to estimate the impact loads, but validation through experimental data is still essential. The present work focuses on a flat-bottomed model fixed over the mean free surface level submitted to regular incoming waves. The proposal is to reproduce previous studies through CFD and model tests in a different reduced scale to provide extra validation and to identify possible non-potential scale effects such as air compressibility. Numerical simulations are performed in both experiments’ scales. The numerical analysis is performed with a marine dedicated flow solver, FINE™/Marine from NUMECA, which features an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) solver and a finite volume method to build spatial discretization. The multiphase flow is represented through the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method for incompressible and nonmiscible fluids. The new model tests were performed at the wave channel of the Laboratory of Waves and Currents (LOC/COPPE – UFRJ), at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract A dynamic elastic large displacement response analysis of the bottom floor of a generic vehicle hull model subjected to empirically obtained coupled blast and impact loads has been conducted using three-dimensional (3-D) shell elements in the ADINA nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis code. For the impulse-dominated problem, the impact load is a square wave step function concentrated load while the blast loads from the detonation of an explosive are a series of distributed pressure loads approximated as triangular impulse loads with linear decay and varying arrival and duration times. The 3-D numerical model has been generated using the PATRAN3 modeling code and converted to the ADINA finite element input data deck using the ADINA translator and careful inclusion of appropriate material properties as well as initial and boundary conditions. Monolithic single-layered four-noded quad shell elements were sufficient to model the bottom floor and the left- and right-horizontal and vertical sponsons as well as the lower front glacis. Although several simplifying assumptions and approximations are made during the generation of the basic floor model, material properties, and the forcing functions, the investigation gives valuable insight into the response behavior of a generic hull bottom floor to externally applied coupled blast and impact loads and provides an inexpensive nondestructive method of evaluation of the structural integrity of modern vehicles subjected to spatially varying transient loads.

The phenomenon of slamming on a bubbly liquid has many occurrences in marine and costal engineering. However, experimental or numerical data on the effect of the presence of gas bubbles within the liquid on the impact loads are scarce and the related physical mechanisms are poorly understood. The aim of the present paper is to study numerically the relationship between the void volume fraction and the impact loads. For that purpose, numerical simulations of the impact of a cone on bubbly water have been performed using the finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit. The present results show the diminution of the impact loads with the increase of the void fraction. This effect appears to be related to the high compressibility of the liquid-gas mixture.

The existence of ice in ice-covered waters may cause damage to the propeller of polar ships, especially when massive ice floes are submerged around the hull. This paper aims to simulate an interaction process of a direct ice collision with a propeller based on the cohesive element method. A constitutive law is applied to model the ice material. The model of ice material is validated against model test results. The resulting impact loads acting on the contact surfaces and the corresponding ice block velocity are calculated in the time domain. The ice crushing, shearing and fracture failures are reproduced in the simulation. The convergence study with three meshing sizes of ice block is performed. To carry out a parametric study, five parameters are selected for analysis. These parameters are composed of rotational speed, direction of the propeller, initial speed of the ice block, contact position, and area between the ice and the propeller. The results show that the ice loads are affected by the five factors significantly. Ice loads tend to increase by decreasing the rotational speed, increasing the initial ice speed and the contact area, and changing the rotational direction from clockwise to counterclockwise. The effect of the contact position on the impact loads is relatively complex, depending on rotational speeds of the propeller.

In this paper, multiple cores sandwich composites undergoing impact loads are optimized in order to improve their resistance to the impact-induced delamination. This peculiar type of composites is characterized by one internal face splitting the core in two parts. Owing to their architecture with an intermediate and two external faces, their additional tailoring capability offers potential advantages in terms of energy absorption capability and damage tolerance behavior over conventional sandwich composites. Obviously, an accurate assessment of the interfacial stress fields, of their damage accumulation mechanisms and of their post-failure behavior are fundamental to fully exploit their potential advantages. Despite it is evident that structural models able to accurately describe the local behavior are needed to accomplish this task, the analysis is commonly still carried out using simplified sandwich models which postulate the overall variation of displacements and stresses across the thickness, because more detailed models could make the computational effort prohibitively large. No attempt is here made to review the ample literature about the sandwich composite models, since a plenty of comprehensive bibliographical review papers and monographs are available in the specialized literature. Likewise, no attempt is made for reviewing the methods used to model the damage. It is just remarked that the models to date available range from detailed models which discretize the real structure of the core, to FEM models by brick elements, to discrete-layer models and to sublaminate models. In these paper, two different models are used, to achieve a compromise between accuracy and limitation of costs. The time history of the contact force is computed by a C° eight-node plate element based on a 3D zig-zag model, in order to achieve the best accuracy using a plate model with the customary five functional d.o.f. This model is also used in the optimization process, since it is mathematically easily treatable and accurately describes the strain energy. In addition, it enables a comparison with the classical plate models, since they can be particularized from it. The counterpart plate element of this zig-zag model, which is obtained from a standard C° plate element through a strain energy updating (which successfully described the impact induced damage as shown by the comparison with the damage detected by c-scanning in a previous paper), is used for computing the contact force time history, to reach a good compromise between accuracy and computational costs. A mixed brick element with the three displacements and the three interlaminar stresses as nodal d.o.f. is used to compute the damage at each time step. The onset of damage is predicted in terms of matrix and fibers failure, cracks, delamination, rippling, wrinkling and face damping using different stress-based criteria. In this paper the effects of the accumulated damage are accounted for through the ply-discount theory, i.e. using reduced elastic properties for the layers and the cores that failed, although it is known that some cases exist for which this material degradation model could be unable to describe the real loss of load carrying capacity. The optimization technique recently proposed by the authors is used in this paper for optimizing the energy absorption properties of multi-core sandwiches undergoing impact loads. The effect of this technique is to act as an energy absorption tuning, since it minimizes or maximizes the amount of energy absorbed by specific modes through a suited in-plane variation of the plate stiffness properties (e.g., bending, in-plane and out-of-plane shears and membrane energies). The appropriate in-plane variable distributions of stiffness properties, making certain strain energy contributions of interest extremal, are found solving the Euler-Lagrange equations resulting from assumption of the laminate stiffness properties as the master field and setting to zero the first variation of wanted and unwanted strain energy contributions (e.g., bending, in-plane and out-of-plane shears and membrane energies). Our purpose is to minimize the energy absorbed through unwanted modes (i.e., involving interlaminar strengths) and maximize that absorbed through desired modes (i.e., involving membrane strengths). The final result is a ply with variable stiffness coefficient over its plane which is able to consistently reduce the through-the-thickness interlaminar stress concentrations, with beneficial effects on the delamination strength. All the solutions proposed can be obtained either varying the orientation of the reinforcement fibers, the fiber volume rate or the constituent materials by currently available manufacturing processes. The coefficients of the involved stiffness terms are computed enforcing conditions which range from the thermodynamic constraints, to imposition of the mean stiffness, to the choice of a convex or a concave shape (in order to minimize or maximize the energy contributions of interest). Two solutions of technical interest will be proposed, which both are based on a parabolic distribution of stiffness coefficients. The former reduces the bending of a lamina with moderately increasing the shear stresses, the second one reduces these stresses with a low increment in the bending contribution. The effects of the incorporation of these layers (with the same mean properties of the layers they replace) is shown hereafter.

The strategic concrete structures are often required to resist impact loads arising from the projectile strike, falling weight, blast generated missile etc. The existing structures found deficient in resisting these loads are required to be retrofitted whereas the upcoming structures are required to be designed for expected impact loads. This paper explores the ways of strengthening existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures using externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets and improving the impact resistance of concrete by mixing hybrid fibers in its production. The impact response of concrete structures is assessed using experiments involving the impact of projectiles of different nose shapes on slab specimens. The material behavior at high strain rate is established using split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) testing at varying strain rates. Analytical models are developed for predicting penetration depth, scabbing thickness, ballistic limit velocity and ejected mass. The experimental results were also validated through numerical modeling using LS-DYNA.

Aboard ships windows are exposed to static as well as dynamic loads, e.g. impact loads. Failure can lead to serious consequences. Therefore two research projects were initiated in order to analyze the load carrying behavior of windows. In addition to quasi-static ultimate load tests and drop tests with water filled rubber bags special attention is paid to the Finite Element (FE) modeling. In particular the response — stresses and deformations — to quasi-static lateral loads can be calculated with good agreement to test results. Hence FE calculations can be useful to determine and compare failure mechanisms of different window designs. An ultimate load range can be estimated by taking into account the breaking strength range of glass. A comparison between FE calculations and results of the impact tests showed that these are sensitive to conditions which could hardly be measured during the test, e.g. the shape of the approaching water-filled rubber bag. Varying of parameters eventually yielded that window response to impact loads can also be calculated sufficiently, at least, to evaluate different window designs. Further investigations on this topic are in progress.

Abstract In the mating phase of float-over operation, the topsides deck load from the vessel is transferred onto the jacket either by ballasting the vessel or by the combination of ballasting and hydraulic jacking system. During this phase of operation, the topsides and jacket experience impact loads through the contact points in a short duration of time. To evaluate the impact loads and to capture the transient effects precisely, a non-linear time domain hydrodynamic analysis is required. To obtain the design loads, generally the numerical jacking simulation is initiated at the time instant of maximum wave height when the jacking system is used. However, the conservative response may also depend on the relative velocity between the jacket and topsides legs. In this paper, a series of non-linear time domain as well as linear frequency domain hydrodynamic analyses are performed to evaluate the impact loads between 9000 tonne integrated topsides deck and a 4-legged jacket in a water depth of 50 m during float-over mating operation. The simulations are performed using MOSES software. The float-over hardware such as LMUs (leg mating unit), DSUs (deck support unit), Jacks, Fenders and Mooring lines are modelled as appropriate linear / nonlinear springs. The principle of the mating operation is considered through a combination of vessel ballasting and jacking operation. This paper discusses about random wave seed selection, effect of vessel response and wave headings on the impact loads of LMUs and Jacks/DSUs.

Whenever undesirable dynamic events occur within power plant, refinery, or process piping systems, specialty supports and restraints have the task of protecting the mechanical equipment and connecting piping from damaging loads and displacements. The array of components that may be affected include, but are not limited to, piping systems, pumps, valve assemblies, pressure vessels, steam generators, boilers, and heat exchangers. In particular, the dynamic events can be classified into two distinct types that originate from either internal events or external events. The internal dynamic load generating events include plant system start-up and shut-down, pressure surges or impacts from rapid valve closures such as steam and water hammer, boiler detonations, pipe rupture, and operating vibratory displacements that may be either low frequency or high frequency vibrations. The external dynamic load generating events include wind loads, earthquake, airplane impact to supporting structures and buildings, and explosions. Most of the aforementioned dynamic load generating events can be defined quite simply as impact loads, i.e., forces and moments that are applied over very short periods of time, for example, less than one second. While earthquake loads may be applied over a total time period of an hour or so, the peak loads and resulting displacements occur on a more sinusoidal basis of peak-to-peak amplitudes. One of the most common specialty restraint components utilized in the piping industry to absorb and transfer the dynamic load resulting from impact events is the hydraulic shock suppressor, otherwise known as the snubber. The snubber is a formidable solution to protecting plant piping systems and equipment from impact loading while not restricting the thermal displacements during routine operations. In the dynamic events that may be characterized by an impact type loading, snubbers provide an instantaneous, practically rigid, axial connection between the piping or other component to be secured and the surrounding structure whether it be concrete or steel (for example). In this way, the kinetic energy can be transmitted and harmlessly dissipated. In the vibratory environment, however, neither the impact load scenario nor the rapid translations are imposed upon snubbers, thereby presenting the competing intended application of the snubber to protect against impact loads versus, in many cases, the improper selection of the snubber to dampen vibratory (other than seismic) loads. The details of the hydraulic shock suppressor design are reviewed and discussed to exemplify why a case can and should be made against the use of snubbers in piping systems within an operating vibratory environment.

Basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) has been applied for strengthening concrete structures. However, studies on reinforced concrete (RC) slabs strengthened by BFRP strips under impact loads are limited in open literature. This study investigates the efficiency of using BFRP strips with various strengthening layouts and anchoring schemes on the impact resistance of RC slabs. A total of 11 two-way square slabs were prepared and tested, including one reference specimen without strengthening and ten slabs strengthened with BFRP strips and/or anchors. The RC slabs were impacted by a drop weight with increasing height until slab failure. The observed failure modes include punching shear failure, BFRP sheet debonding and reinforcement fracture. The failure modes and the effects of using various strengthening schemes on the impact resistant capacity of RC slabs were examined. The quantitative measurements, such as impact velocity, indentation depth and diameter, were compared and discussed. In addition, numerical studies were carried out by using LS-DYNA to simulate the impact tests of RC slabs with and without BFRP strengthening. With the calibrated numerical model, the impact behavior of slabs with various dimensions and strengthening layouts under different impact intensities can be predicted with good accuracy.
