This study investigates language functions used by the caretakers of autistic children in ―Miracle Run‖. The objectives of the study are to find out the kinds and the effectiveness of language functions used by caretakers in the film. This study uses descriptive qualitative approach. It is categorized as discourse analysis because this study analyzes phenomena of talk in interaction. The data are collected from the utterances used by the caretakers; they are mother, doctor, teacher, and therapist when talk to the autistic children and those are analyzed by using M.A.K Halliday theory on language functions.

The increasingly expansive Wahabi movement in Indonesian has caused debate in various circles, one of which is Nahdhatul Ulama. To answer Wahabi’s development, Nahdhatul Ulama felt it was necessary to provide a response, one of which was through Aula Magazine on edition February 2016. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach and using analysis media text in the form of discourse analysis model Van Dijk. The results obtained are imagery of Wahabi portrayed as an organization that is dangerous for Indonesia because the way of dakwah wahabi is straigh, as Wahabi sometimes blamming someone that doing something different with Nabi Muhamamd (bid’ah) and after that bid’ah can become worse like call someone kafir. The aims of this study are trying to give us a deep understanding of what Critical Discourse Analysis is. This study starts with a discussion of the origin of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), then exploring interdisciplinary based on the renowned theories in CDA which proposed by Fairclough, van Dijk and Wodak. In the last part of the article discussed the principles of CDA form Fairclough point of view. The present article uses a descriptive qualitative approach from reputable references which is relevant to the topics.

The current research focuses on the discourse analysis of the food and drinks advertisement. The data were collected from television advertisement by using observational method. The analysis is based on the qualitative approach by focusing the analysis on the discourse approach. Data of this study in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences in food and beverage advertisements on television. The result of the analysis shows that the emotional aspect was frequently used to engage the costumers to the product. Some advertisements also use foreign language to give a good impression to the costumer. From the result of the analysis, it can be inferred that food and drinks advertisement not only provided information and about the product but also reflect the cultural value of the costumers.

AbstractThe purpose of this research is to describe and identify the conative function in Sharp's "Hole-LessTub" washing machine advertisements. This type of research is a descriptive qualitative approach tothe analysis of critical discourse. The method used is the note note method. The results of the researchprove that: 1) Manufacturers / writers of SHARP hole-less Tubs by influencing readers to advertisetheir products predominantly using phrase structures; 2) The dominant phrase / producer structure ofthe manufacturer / writer is the use of words with meaningful intensity such as more and maximum inadding to the effect of the accompanying adjectives so that they are empathic; 3) Words used in theform of phrases tend to be poetic (expressive); 4) SHARP manufacturer / writer of Hole-less Tubwashing machines from SHARP in providing stimulus to readers by revealing the strengths of theirproducts and implicitly revealing weaknesses of other products; 5) Producers / writers in arouse thedesire and desire of readers to be influenced by the products they advertise using foreign terms.Keyword: conative, critical discourse analysis, advertising

This thesis is a study on the construction of expatriate’s identity in Indonesia Expat magazine. The purpose of this study is to find how the expatriate’s identity is constructed in Indonesia Expat. In this study, the theory used was van Dijk’s (2015) critical discourse analysis. The data were parts of texts taken from Meet the Expat and Info for Expat columns in Indonesia Expat magazine. The writers took a descriptive qualitative approach in this study. According to the findings, there were five identities constructed about the expatriates: skillful, successful, wealthy, healthy, and caring. These identities were constructed by utilizing background, details, graphics, and word choice to generate particular interpretations.Keywords: Critical discourse analysis, expatriate, identity, elite

The purpose of this study is to describe (1) Subject-Object and (2) position of writer-reader in the novel Migrant Workers' Diary and Xie Xie Ni De Ai. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the Sara Mills discourse analysis method. This research data is in the form of words, sentences or texts whose source of data is in the novel of Migrant Workers' Diary and Xie Xie Ne De Ai. At the data analysis stage, steps are taken: selecting, classifying, analyzing, interpreting the data, and summarizing it. The results of this study indicate that through the relationships that occur between migrant workers and capitalism, migrant workers and employers, and between fellow migrant workers are still positioned as marginal people. TKW is described as having no power. Regarding the author-reader structure, the writer positions the reader with direct and indirect greetings. This greeting serves to place the reader as part of the text, so that they will be concerned about the problems of the migrant workers. The conclusion is that the two novels still represent TKW discourse in line with the dominant discourse.

This study is conducted in order to reveal the violated maxims in the humorous utterances and the implicature of the maxim violations in NET comedy program ‘The East’, from a discourse analysis point of view. The writer analyzes the types of maxims that are violated found in the humorous utterances in episode 397 entitled ‘Ribet Milih Tempat Kerja Baru’ (Complication in choosing a workplace) of the comedy program ‘The East’. This study is conducted by using a descriptive-qualitative approach, aimed to create a description from the perspectives or experiences of the writer. The findings reveal there are totally 26 (twenty-six) violations, each with its implied meaning in the episode of the program. Among the four maxims, the most frequent occurrence is the violation of maxim of Quality with 11 occurrences. Key words: Cooperative Principle, violation of conversational maxims, implicature

ABSTRACTThis research paper concerned with the analysis of factor affecting ideological shift of text in the translation of literary work. As the data source, a novel entitled 'half of yellow sun' a work of Chimamanda Adichie was analyzed. The analysis was specified to clauses taken from the English and Indonesian version of the novel, as the data. Further, the researcher applied descriptive qualitative approach in collecting and analyzing the data. Halliday’s theory of metafunction, specified on the analysis of transitivity system was used as main theory. Moreover, the theory of ideology in translation was adopted in the analysis, as causal factor to see how translation ideology cause the ideological shift of text in translation. Then, the result of the analysis revealed that the intermetafunctional shift is the most significant category found in the text (90.24%), while the intra-metafunctional shift was only found once (9.75%).   It proved that there were significant change of ideology of text showed by the changing of the process of transitivity system. Morever, the result of analysis releaved that, the ideological shifts of text were mostly affected by domestication ideology with percentages 78.05%, and foreignization ideology by percentages 21.95% or equal to a quarter of the whole clauses. It means that the translator produced the translation based on her goal and point of view and ideology of target language's culture and trying to make the text as closely as possible to the target readers’ language.
