Translating a work of literary art, especially poetry, also means translating its style. At the lexico-stylistic level, style manifests itself in both denotative and connotative meanings of the lexical units of a text. By analyzing the connotations of the lexical layer of shame motif in English translations of Bosniak ballad “Hasanaginica”, we can identify and problematize the interpretation of this motif in the target texts in relation to the source text. Applying the method of lexico-stylistic analysis to the key verses of the shame motif, both in the source text and in the target texts in English, we examine the ways in which different translators build the mystical motif as the only abstract concept that never develops into a poetic image, leaving space for multi-layered connotations that are imposed on the reader. The results of the analysis point to the translations that are closest to the source text in terms of containing minimal differences in the degree of their interpretive limitation or intrusiveness. The most vividly evoked key verse of the shame motif is found in Francis Jones’ translation. However, the final vocabulary choice made by a discerning translator possessing a high degree of stylistic awareness should also be influenced by other aspects of the original text, such as its established rhythmic pattern or meter that requires preservation and other formal characteristics of this ballad, which are not to be found in Jones’ translation. Therefore, our conclusion is that the results of lexico-stylistic analysis of the original should be weighed against the results of analysis on other linguo-stylistic levels of expression (phonostylistic and syntaxostylistic) in order to synthesize them as successfully as possible, which could help recreate a new, more effective and reliable translation of this masterpiece of our oral literature.

While the term “school absenteeism” refers to a student’s withdrawal from the reach of classroom instruction, we explicitly opt for the term “class avoidance.” Existing studies on this phenomenon have primarily dealt with unauthorized physical absence from class. However, in our contribution, we extend the scope to cognitive absence. The behavior of students who are physically present but cognitively disengaged has largely been neglected in educational research thus far. This deficit stands in contrast to the widely accepted importance of cognitive activation in the classroom. The core of our contribution consists in the presentation and the construct validation of a newly developed scale for measuring cognitive class avoidance (inattention in class). We evaluated this measurement instrument in a cross-sectional study with a sample of 171 seventh- to ninth-grade students (M = 14.3 years, SD = .94). Our data confirmed a theoretically founded g-factor model. The results of the analysis point to a limited prevalence of cognitive class avoidance. Such forms of behavior were significantly more frequently reported by boys than by girls, however.

News coverage of Jair Bolsonaro’s 2018 presidential campaign routinely focused on his misogynistic, homophobic, and racist rhetoric.  He derided women and Afro-Brazilians, even though both groups are majorities of the Brazilian population. Notwithstanding his offensive rhetoric, Bolsonaro was elected president with significant support from both members of both groups. In this paper, we use public opinion data to investigate why women and Afro-Brazilians voted for him.  Informed by intersectionality research, we explore why individuals voted for him. The results of a quantitative analysis point to important distinctions among women and Afro-Brazilians.  In particular, our results show that Afro-Brazilian women were least likely to support him. These results underscore the importance of using an intersectional perspective to understand political behavior in Brazil.

Abstract - This article analyzes the attribution of enunciative responsibility or point of view in scientific popularization news published in the magazine Galileuonline, aiming to discuss the assumption of the points of view assumed by the enunciating speaker or materialized in the epistemic and perceptive focuses, in the argumentative connectors and in the agreement between two speakers. The discursive restrictions required by the communicative situation of scientific popularization are extended to this objective. The analysis had as theoretical and methodological foundation the Textual Analysis of Discourses elaborated by Adam, the Enunciation Linguistics by Rabatel and the concept of discursive restrictions from the Semiolinguistics by Charaudeau. The research data are composed of two scientific popularization news published in the magazineGalileu website. The results of the analysis point out that the entrance of science in the news obeys a regularity: it occurs not only by the source of scientific knowledge (epistemic mediation), but also by the common sense (perceptive mediation), by the enunciating speaker, by the coenunciation and, in addition, through the argumentative connectors. Keywords: Enunciative Responsibility; Media; Scientific Popularization; Magazine Galileu.

ABSTRACT – In this paper, we study representations of catastrophe victims in two contemporary journalistic narratives in Brazil: Todo dia a mesma noite by Daniela Arbex and Tragédia em Mariana by Cristina Serra. We first study the meaning and uses of the word victim to describe the types of victims in the narratives. Our analysis of both narratives focuses on the victims. We aim to understand how the storytelling in each narrative develops the victims’ stories. The results of the analysis point to different narrative projects and, as a result, to different ethical positions regarding the representation of victims. Arbex’s work focuses on trauma as an emotional nucleus which all characters (and possibly the reader) suffer from. Investigating the catastrophe is the main focus in Serra’s work, with the stories of those who died told through the memory of those who survive them, who seek justice, and who look to rebuild their lives.RESUMO – Neste trabalho, investigamos representações de vítimas de catástrofes em duas narrativas jornalísticas brasileiras contemporâneas: Todo dia a mesma noite, de Daniela Arbex, e Tragédia em Mariana, de Cristina Serra.

The development of agriculture in Slovakia in the last three decades has been influenced by two events: the transformation of agriculture after 1989 and Slovakia’s accession to the European Union in 2004. In this paper, we analyze the effects of Slovakia’s accession to the European Union on the development and structure of crop production. The aim of the paper was to identify connections, parallels and differences between the developments of the sown areas of the most important crops at the level of Slovakia and its regions in the period 2004–2020. Cluster analysis based on the similarity of the development of the sown areas divided the crops into four clusters (cereals; sugar-beet; oilseeds, multiannual fodder crops, maize; legumes, vegetables, potatoes). Multivariate analyses of the time series of sown areas also revealed similarities and differences between the regions of Slovakia. The results of the analysis point to regional differentiation and the identify two clusters. The first cluster comprises the Nitra and Trnava Regions, while the second cluster consists of the remaining six regions. The study has shown that changes in the agrarian sector after 2004, conditioned by Slovakia’s accession to the European Union, have been reflected in changes in the area and structure of cultivated crops, and in the differentiated development of sown areas.

Subject. The article addresses the commensurability of requirements and conditions for the Russian economy growth. Objectives. The focus is on identifying significant deviations in commensurability of requirements and conditions for the Russian economy growth. Methods. The study draws on the systems approach, using methods of statistical, neural network, and cluster analysis. Results. The study highlights the problem of commensurability of requirements and conditions for the growth of the Russian economy, which negatively affects its structural integrity. It reveals a limited effect of monetization of the Russian economy on growth rates due to cash moving from the real sector to savings in US dollars. Against this background, the volatility of the developing Russian market and exchange rate decrease even with rising oil prices, however, the risk associated with an increase in borrowings, tax boost, deviation from the budget rule, and strong devaluation of Ruble increases. The results of the analysis point to significant deviations, which do not allow to set goals properly. Conclusions. The unveiled deviations in commensurability of requirements and conditions for the growth of the Russian economy are compensated by the creation of various working groups in the context of another virtual strategy of socio-economic development of Russia.
