A study shows that pair programming can help slow-paced students in completing Introductory Programming assessment. This paper replicates the study on Data Structure course, in which the completion of the assessments does not only rely on logic but also theoretical knowledge. The aim is to check whether pair programming is still helpful on such new assessment characteristics. Three classes of Data Structure course with 14 teaching weeks and a total of 72 undergraduate students are considered in this study. Two of the classes are about Basic Data Structure while another one is the advanced one. Our evaluation shows that pair programming can help slow-paced students in both pair and individual academic performance. It also increases overall academic performance if the tasks are more logic oriented. Nevertheless, no benefits provided for fast-paced students paired to the slow-paced ones, even though all students appreciate the use of pair programming.

AbstractTransition to university is a challenging phase in youngsters’ lives. The literature indicates that geographical distance separating the places of study and of family residence adds to the difficulties of transition and adjustment to university. Recent evidence suggests that it also negatively impacts students’ grades. Despite important work done by economists, geographers and psychologists, sociology has devoted scarce interest in understanding this topic. This article seeks to bridge this gap, specifically exploring the reasons justifying the largely ignored effect of distance between the university and family home in academic performance. The study draws on data on undergraduate students of a Portuguese public university, collected through an online survey. Two dimensions, one more related to practical life occupations and another more linked to personal feelings and activities, are examined. It is argued that the negative impact of distance is mainly due to homesickness and to the time spent traveling home. Results from such analysis are twofold socially relevant: of the utmost importance for families, academics and students’ support services, deserve to be seriously considered by policy makers deciding on the territorial distribution of higher-education institutions.

Due to its high failure rate, Introductory Programming has become a main concern. One of the main issues is the incapability of slow-paced students to cope up with given programming materials. This paper proposes a learning technique which utilizes pair programming to help slow-paced students on Introductory Programming; each slow-paced student is paired with a fast-paced student and the latter is encouraged to teach the former as a part of  grading system. An evaluation regarding that technique has been conducted on three undergraduate classes from an Indonesian university for the second semester of 2018. According to the evaluation, the use of pair programming may help both slow-paced and fast-paced students. Nevertheless, it may not significantly affect individual academic performance.

The current cross-sectional study was carried out to analyze the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on the academic performance of veterinary medical students and researchers. An online google form questionnaire was used to invite veterinary students and researchers to answer the questionnaire. A total of 807 participants were from 86 different countries answered the questionnaire with an overall response rate of 94.1%. The participants were 50.1% males and 49.9% females. The age of participants ranged from 17 to 51 years, and the majority of them (85.0%) were undergraduate students while postgraduate students comprised 15.0%. The data showed that the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown affected the academic performance of most participants (96.5%) with varying degrees. The mean evaluation scores for the online education, in general, was 4.9 ± 2.4 while that for the practical parts was 3.7± 2.6. About 60.7% of participants evaluated the online learning in general with 1-5 of 10 points, while 77.9% of participants evaluated the online learning in practical lessons with 1-5 of 10 points. Although online education provides an opportunity for self-study. The main challenge online education faces in veterinary medical science is how to give practical lessons. Since most of the subjects are practical; therefore, it is not easy to learn it online. Students think that it is difficult to fulfill the veterinary competencies only with the online education system. Online education can be improved by making it more interactive, showing medical procedures in real situations, giving concise information, and providing 3D virtual tools to mimic the real situation.

BACKGROUND The online social networking is rapidly changing the lives of human beings. Young people especially students are more addicted to new technologies and to online social networking site. The popularity of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Whatsapp continue to grow and making remarkable changes in world now a day. OBJECTIVE To analyze the impact of Facebook addiction on academic performance, self-esteem and intelligence quotient (IQ) level among the undergraduate students. METHODOLOGY This is a cross sectional observational study, that was conducted on undergraduate students of College of Physical Therapy. 150 undergraduate PT students (males and females) of second, third, fourth and fifth years were included in this study, who have been using Facebook from 8 months or above. RESULT Among 150 students, 83 (55.33%) participants were Facebook addicted, whereas 67 (44.67%) participants were not addicted to Facebook. The age of the students range from 18 to 25 years and the mean age of all students was 21.7 years. There was a significant association between Facebook addiction with academic performance of students according to their GPA (p-value =0.00), with IQ level (p value = 0.00), and with self-esteem level (p-value = 0.00) of students.

Purpose: The objective of the research study is to critically analyze the factors impeding time management towards students’ academic performance achievement. Design/methodology/approach: The study was carried out using a well-defined questionnaire collecting samples from 164 undergraduate students studying in the Faculty of Business, Sohar University, Sultanate of Oman from a population of 700 undergraduate students. For the study, the cluster-sampling method was adopted. SPSS was used to perform the statistical analysis. Findings: The empirical results reveal that none of the claimed factors related to time management influence the academic performance of the students. The students’ performance is purely based on their efforts and on their own self-management. Thus, it was concluded that it is the responsibility of the students to manage their time for which they should make their own plans. Practical Implications: The study confirms that the student's stay at the hostel facilitates them to improve their academic performances. It is also interpreted that the students are carried away by the domestic work during their stay at home, parents should take utmost not to deprived of their time for study. Parents should make necessary arrangements to reduce their travel time. Students should have their own self-control and self-commitment to manage and plan their own time for study purposes. Originality/value: The research work is of its first kind as it focuses on the impact of time management factors on the academic performances of the students.

Objective: Investigate the influence of the stressors caused by the Covid-19 pandemic on the academic performance of undergraduate students, and their ability to concentrate on schoolwork.Participants: 1,806 students attending a racially diverse 4-year university with a high rate of first generation college students.Methods: An online survey utilizing measures of depression (PHQ-9), generalized anxiety (GAD-7), faculty and academic advising support, economic insecurity, studying conditions, family conditions, trouble concentrating on schoolwork, and academic performance. OLS regression is used to explain academic performance and trouble concentrating. Results: Four of five students reported trouble concentrating, and trouble concentrating strongly decreased academic performance. Faculty and peer advising support and adequate studying conditions improved academic performance. Depression strongly increased trouble concentrating. Adequate studying conditions and academic advising support improved concentration.Conclusions: In the upcoming year, faculty and student support services should highlight mental health issues and services, and increase supports for students experiencing distress.

This study aims to investigate the important academic factors; teaching method, study habits of students and attendance of students that affect students' academic performance. The study used a survey method and analytical research design. A stratified sampling method was used to select 150 respondents from 1,525 total number of undergraduate students from four high student enrolment community colleges of Bhaktapur district. Regression analysis was used to identify the impact of independent variables on student's academic performance. Mann-Whitney test was used to identify the differences between perceived student's performance across gender, age and faculty.  To test for differences between perceived student's performance across study year and guardian occupation, Kruskal-Wallis test was conducted. The result shows that the teaching method and attendance of students have a significant positive impact on perceived student's performance but student's habit has no significant impact on perceived student's performance.  However, it has been proved that gender, age, faculty, study year and guardian occupation do not have any differences in perceived student's performance.
