Benefits of Managing the Capacity of Special Needs Shelters with Cross-County Collaboration

A significant task of planners involved in emergency disaster management is planning for the optimal assignment of people to emergency shelters. This complex task depends on the available infrastructure and roadway characteristics and can take on additional complexity when older populations are considered because their health conditions may deteriorate during a disaster. Older people may also require special assistance even though they are not listed in the registries of people with special needs. This paper specifically focuses on the assignment of older populations to shelters. The paper presents a spatial optimization methodology based on data from a geographic information system. The focus is on the segment of the population 85 years old and older and on the use of potential benefits of cross-county collaboration in special needs shelter (SpNS) management. Such collaboration can help in using additional shelter capacity between neighboring counties ( a) to overcome the lack of capacity in a county and ( b) to assign the demand to a close shelter across county borders. The methodology was applied to a case study of five counties in the Florida Panhandle. Because the SpNS demand for the 85+ age group was not known exactly, a sensitivity analysis was conducted for different demand levels. From an emergency management perspective, this type of cross-county utilization can provide a means to use existing regular shelters in multiple counties to serve the 85+ population.

This study aims to obtain a description of the supporting and inhibiting factors in the process of organizational change of education based on management perspective that occurs in the scope of higher health education of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. This study used a qualitative approach by conducting case study at Palangka Raya Health Polytechnic. The research results are as follows: (a) Supporting factor that must be there is the existence of a manual or technical guidance in organizing the organization; (b) Whereas the inhibiting factor is the old habits, the mindset, the mental model is still inhibiting from the organizers and members of the organization; (c) The inhibiting factor is the existence of selfishness of each highly visible party; (d) Inhibitors may also occur if there are still "little kings" and selfishness from each of the former institutions; (e) Other issues that support in this process of change are in terms of facilities and infrastructure, namely the availability of buildings and land; (f) Another inhibiting factor is that in terms of educational qualifications, there are departments that do not meet, for example in the midwifery department there are still many average teachers with Diploma IV education background and non-linear education; (g) Inhibiting factors may also occur if the reason of seniority is always carried around; (h) The inhibiting factor is lack of human resources in using modern health equipment, including the use of teaching aids in accordance with the progress of science and teaching and learning technology.   Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperolah gambaran mengenai faktor pendukung dan penghambat dalam proses perubahan organisasi pendidikan yang ditinjau dari perspektif manajemen yang terjadi di lingkup organisasi pendidikan tinggi kesehatan Kementerian Kesehatan Republik Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan melakukan studi kasus pada institusi Politeknik Kesehatan Kemenkes Palangka Raya. Hasil penelitian adalah sebagai berikut: (a) Faktor pendukung yang harus ada yaitu adanya buku pedoman atau petunjuk teknis dalam penyelenggaraan organisasi; (b) Sedangkan yang menjadi faktor penghambat itu adalah kebiasaan lama, mindset-nya, mental model-nya masih bersifat menghambat dari para pengelola dan anggota organisasi; (c) Faktor penghambat yaitu adanya keegoisan masing-masing pihak yang sangat tampak; (d) Penghambat juga dapat terjadi apabila masih ada “raja-raja kecil” dan keegoisan dari masing-masing institusi yang dulu; (e) Perihal lain yang mendukung dalam proses perubahan ini adalah dari sisi sarana dan prasarana, yaitu tersedianya gedung dan tanah; (f) Faktor penghambat lain yaitu dari sisi kualifikasi pendidikan ternyata ada jurusan yang tidak memenuhi, misalnya di jurusan kebidanan masih banyak rata-rata tenaga pengajar dengan latar pendidikan Diploma IV dan pendidikannya tidak linear; (g) Faktor penghambat juga dapat terjadi apabila alasan senioritas selalu dibawa-bawa; (h) Faktor penghambat yaitu masih kurang kesiapan sumber daya manusia dalam menggunakan alat-alat kesehatan modern termasuk penggunaan alat bantu belajar mengajar yang sesuai dengan kemajuan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi pengajaran dan pembelajaran.

Introduction In order to promote training and education in special-needs dentistry an attempt was made to introduce problem-based learning (PBL) as a method of postgraduate dental education. The aim of this paper was to review the principles of PBL and report on a case study using this methodology. Method The case study was of a PBL session, on the subject of ‘problems of obtaining appropriate dental care for people with epilepsy’, undertaken at a national conference. Delegates were asked to complete a pre- and post-session questionnaire on PBL and their attitudes to the session. Results The session received a mixed response. Only 33 (35%) thought the session was valuable and only 20 (31%) thought it was better than conventional teaching methods and yet over half (55%) said they would like to attend more PBL in special-needs dentistry. Professionals complementary to dentistry were more likely to find the PBL session of value and to prefer the method to a more conventional format than dentists were (chi-square=5.5, df=1, p<0.05 and chi-square=5.9, df=1, p<0.05 respectively). Conclusion Valuable feedback was received from delegates. This will enable improvements to be made in future courses so that the effectiveness of PBL can be optimised.

SummaryMania in late life is a serious disorder that demands specialist assessment and management. However, it is greatly under-researched, with only a paucity of studies specifically analysing older populations. The mainstay of the old age psychiatry workload will inevitably be concerned with assessing and managing dementia and depression, but the steady rise in the aging population with longer survival means that there will be an increase in absolute numbers of older people presenting with mania. There are no specific treatment algorithms available for mania in late life. This article reviews mania and hypomania in late life and concentrates on diagnosis, assessment and treatment, as well as on the management considerations associated with this important age group.

Purpose The shopping center (SC) industry in emerging countries has grown fast over the past decade; however, recently, it is showing signs of slowing down. Nevertheless, some SC-companies perform well. As those firms operate in alliance networks, relational opportunities and risks should be considered in their strategic analyses. Although there is a significant amount of research on SC from a marketing perspective, there is a dearth of research on strategic alliances from an SC management perspective. This paper aims at answering the following question: How do characteristics of the alliance networks of leading SC-companies contribute to their success by mitigating the structural threats the SC-industry in Brazil is facing? Design The case study method was adopted for analyzing two leading Brazilian SC-companies. Several data sources were used to allow for data triangulation. The lack of literature on strategic alliances and the SC-industry, as well as the research’s exploratory nature, justified this choice. Findings The research made evident that the SC-companies’ alliance network characteristics not only mitigate some of the structural industry threats but also enhance opportunities. It illustrated how firms can conduct a strategic analysis from a network perspective with the right tools. It also made evident how much more accurate the results of a comprehensive relational analysis are compared with traditional analyses that do not consider the strategic implications of relational factors. Practical implications The research contributed to SC management by highlighting the importance of taking into account the network characteristics of their relationships with key partners and of considering these as alliances and not merely contractual arrangements. Originality/value There is a dearth of research on the strategic implications of alliances of firms that own and manage a portfolio of SCs, as well as of their relationships with other actors in the industry, such as retailers and real estate owners, from a network perspective.

Exuberant Life offers a contemporary synthesis of what is known about the evolution of the curiously wonderful organisms of Galápagos, of how they are faring in the tumultuous world of human-induced change, and how evolution can guide efforts today for their conservation. In eight case-study chapters, the book looks at each organism’s ancestry, at how and when it came to Galápagos, and how and why it changed since its arrival, all with an eye to its conservation today. Such analysis often provides surprises and suggestions not previously considered, like the potential benefits to joint conservation efforts with tree daisies and tree finches, for example, or ways that a new explanation for peculiar behaviors in Nazca and blue-footed boobies can benefit both species today. In each chapter, a social-ecological systems framework is used, because human influence is always present, and because it allows an explicit link to evolution. We see how the evolutionary fitnesses of Galápagos organisms are now a product of both ecological conditions and human impact, including climate change. Historically, Galápagos has played a central role in the understanding of evolution; what it now offers to teach us about conservation may well prove indispensable for the future of the planet.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the potential benefits and limitations associated with aligning accreditation and academic program reviews in post-secondary institutions, using a descriptive case study approach. Design/methodology/approach The paper describes two Canadian graduate programs that are subject to both external professional accreditation and institutional cyclical reviews, as they underwent an aligned review. The process was developed as a collaborative effort between the academic units, the professional associations and the university’s graduate-level quality assurance office. For each program, a single self-study was developed, a single review panel was constituted, and a single site visit was conducted. The merits and challenges posed by the alignment process are discussed. Findings Initial feedback from the academic units suggests that the alignment of accreditation and program reviews is perceived as reducing the burden on programs with regard to the time and effort invested by faculty, staff and other stakeholders, as well as in terms of financial expenses. Based on this feedback, along with input from reviewers and program evaluation committee members, 14 recommendations emerged for ways in which an aligned review process can be set up for success. Practical implications The results suggest that aligned reviews are not only resource-efficient but also allow reviewers to provide more holistic feedback that faculty may be more willing to engage with for program enhancement. Originality/value The present study contributes to the existing body of knowledge about conducting aligned reviews in response to external accreditation requirements or institutional needs. It summarizes the potential benefits and limitations and offers recommendations for potential best practices for carrying out aligned reviews for policymakers and practitioners.

Abstract How the self perceives reality is a traditional topic of research across several disciplines. I examine the perceived self on Facebook, as a case-study of self-knowledge on „classical” social media. Following Blascovich & Bailenson (2011), I consider the distinction between the real and the virtual as relative. Perceptual self-knowledge, filtered through social media, requires rethinking the perceived self in terms of social reality (Neisser, 1993). This claim dovetails Jenkins’s (2013) notion of the self as an active participant in consumption. I argue that the perceived self in social media could be conceived in terms of how it would like to be perceived and appraised by its virtual audience. Using Neisser’s (1993) typology of self-knowledge and Castañeda’s (1983) theory of I-guises, I analyse seven samples from Anglo-American and Bulgarian Facebook sites and show that the perceived self produces itself online as a captivating presence with a credible story. My samples are taken from FB community pages with negligible cultural differences across an online teenage/twens (twixter) age group. I then discuss some problematic aspects of the perceived self online, as well as recent critiques of technoconsumerism.
