Meningitis is an inflammatory process that affects the brain membranes (pia mater and arachnoid), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Such a process can be caused by viruses and bacteria. The aim of this study was to analyze the epidemiological profile of cases of meningitis in the state of Ceará, reported from 2014 to 2018. This is a cross-sectional, exploratory study that outlined a quantitative and descriptive study on cases of meningitis in the state of Ceará. Ceará, retrospectively, from 2014 to 2018. Data from the Department of Informatics of SUS, DATASUS, were used. Of the 1710 reported cases of meningitis, the highest prevalence was in the 20-39 age group and the 40-59 age group, 32.0% and 20.6%, respectively. Males account for 62% of confirmations. 1398 occur in the state capital, Fortaleza, being of majority expression. The diagnostic test with the highest number of confirmations is the chemocytological test.

Introduction: The Bioceanic Routeand its economic integration will have tremendous impact within the cities under management. The state of Mato Grosso do Sul and interior municipalities of the Paraguay-Brazil Border are standouts. The permanence of these workers in Brazilian territory will lead to a rapid increase in population in the border towns connected by the corridor and consequently, in the incidence of infectious diseases. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, quantitative and descriptive study of documentary approach that aimed to analyze the prevalence of tropical infectious diseases such asarboviroses and Diseases Related to Inadequate Environmental Sanitation (DRIES) notified and stored in the National System of Notifiable Diseases (SINAN). The sample consisted of new cases of these pathologies in the municipality of Porto Murtinho registered between January 2017 and December 2020. Results: Within the period analyzed, an increase of 10% in the total number of diseases occured. The number of dengue cases increased 36 times its previous rates; there was a maintenance from cases of Leptospirosis, Yellow Fever, Zika, Chikungunya, whereas the incidence of Syphilis, HIV and HPV decreased. Conclusions: Actions aimed at preventing the increase of Arboviruses and DRIESI before, during and after the construction of the Bioceanic Route are needed in view of the changes that will be imposed by it. Faced with the increase in the flow of people that is inevitable with the construction of this project, several outcomes are expected based on previous experiences already mentioned in this work.

This study aims to assess the epidemiological situation of five municipalities that are part of the bioceanic route in order to analyze the descriptors and general health aspect of the population through a retrospective, quantitative and cross-sectional descriptive study with a documentary approach, from secondary data reported to the National System of Notifiable Diseases in the municipalities of Guia Lopes da Laguna, Jardim, Nioaque, Porto Murtinho, Sidrolândia and Campo Grande, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the period from January 2015 to December 2020. The incidence rate ranged between 32.23 and 79.4 cases/100,000 inhabitants. There was a predominance of individuals aged between 30-39 years (26.05%) and males (67.5%). The most important injuries were alcoholism (19.15%) and smoking (18%). In the exams, 52.3% had positive bacilloscopy and 32.03% had a positive culture. The incidence of tuberculosis in the evaluated municipalities was higher than the Brazilian average and that of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. These evaluated municipalities do not have a favorable epidemiological situation with regard to tuberculosis and the construction of the biocenic route may further aggravate the situation.

Tuberculosis is an important global health problem associated with low levels of education and income. This study aims to describe the epidemiological profile of notified cases of tuberculosis in the municipality of Sinop, Mato Grosso, between 2012 and 2018. This is a descriptive study using secondary data from the Brazilian Notification Disease Information (SINAN NET). In the municipality of Sinop, between 2012 and 2018, there were 162 reports of tuberculosis, 80.86% of new cases, 4.32% of relapses, 4.93% of re-entry after treatment abandonment. Regarding age, the most affected was between 20 and 34 years (36% of cases); 23% of individuals completed elementary school only; 65% are male and 9% are coinfected with HIV. It was noticed that the epidemiological profile of tuberculosis cases in Sinop, are in line with the reality presented worldwide, and it is necessary to reinforce the health care of the population, seeking to walk together with the other international organizations that aim to eliminate this disease.

Abstract—A synopsis of Dicliptera (Acanthaceae) for Brazil is presented. Six species are recognized: Dicliptera ciliaris, D. sexangularis, and D. squarrosa, widely distributed in South America; D. purpurascens, which ranges from the North Region of Brazil (in the state of Acre) to eastern Bolivia; D. gracilirama, a new species from the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil; and D. granchaquenha, a new species recorded in dry and semideciduous forests in Bolivia and western Brazil, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Furthermore, we propose new synonyms and designate lectotypes for eleven names. An identification key to the six accepted Dicliptera species in Brazil is provided.

The menaced and poorly-known waters of the Bodoquena Plateau revealed a new resident, the stunning Hypostomus froehlichi sp. n., a large-sized armored catfish, which is finally described after more than twenty years since its discovery. The Bodoquena Plateau is drained by the rio Paraguay basin, and is located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The new species differs from its congeners on the Bodoquena crystalline waters by having teeth with morphological and numerical variation in adult specimens. There is a continuous range of specimens having about 20 thick and worn teeth to specimens having about 50 thin teeth with intact crowns and lanceolate main cusps. Additional diagnostic characters are: dentaries angled more than 90 degrees, dark blotches, one plate bordering supraoccipital, moderate keel along dorsal series of plates, usually two rows of blotches per interradial membrane on dorsal, pectoral and ventral fins, and by attaining comparatively large size. Hypostomus froehlichi seems to be endemic to the area of the Bodoquena Plateau, in rivers draining to the rio Miranda. The description of the new species reveals a potential conservation flagship species as it is one of the most seen and documented fish by visitors and divers in the clear waters from the touristic, though menaced, Bonito region in Brazil.
