The main goal of the study is to evaluate the image of the Monk Barnabas of Gethsemane in the work of Ivan Sergeyevich Shmelev, as well as the significance of the writer’s personal relationship with elder Barnabas. The work uses the comparative historical method and the method of philological analysis. To achieve this goal, an analysis is made of the biography and works of I. S. Shmelyov, in which the image of the Monk Barnabas of Gethsemane is found, in particular, in the novels The Story of a Love, The Summer of the Lord, The Heavenly Ways, The Pilgrimage (Bogomoliye), the short story A Visit to Elder Barnabas, and others. The most important results of the study show that I. S. Shmelev creates images of the righteous, relying on the aesthetic tradition of Orthodoxy- he depicts saints and the righteous in a radiant and favourable light. An important aesthetic device is the image of a person through the eyes of a child, soon to cross the “angelic” age, who (due to his spiritual purity), looking at people, perceives not only their appearance, but their state of mind: light or dark. At the same time, luminosity is built in the artistic system of I. S. Shmelyov in a clear hierarchy, which is based on the patristic Orthodox hierarchy, expressed by the words of St. John Climacus: «Angel are an example for monks and monks and monastic life are a light to to all in the world», which clearly show the deep-rooted aesthetic thinking of the writer in the Orthodox cultural tradition.

There are two main objectives of this paper. The first one, more general and partly liter- ary-theoretical, is to show, within the author’s wider study of narrative empathy and using Andrić’s short story “Aska and the Wolf ” as an example, that what is important for this concept is not whether it deals with documentary or fictional stories, but whether the author has and by which means convinced us of the life truthfulness they convey, that is, whether the aesthetic form and the represented experience of his characters have and to what extent activated neuro- logical regions of the readers responsible for empathy. A methodological approach to “the text as world” is equally applicable to both fictional and documentary narration since the worlds are essentially imaginary in both cases. Reality represents a framework for understanding textual universes; likewise the world of fiction can be a telescope for understanding reality. The second objective of this paper is linked to this: to finally ask the question why the shepherds, i.e. why Andrić had to kill the wolf. The destiny of the wolf – not only in this sto- ry-parable where narrative empathy is an excuse for the cruel hand of justice – becomes para- digmatic for one view of the world in which there is no forgiveness and redemption for a mur- derer. If the writer had allowed art to win over the evil in the wolf, if he had left the wolf alive, the short story would have definitely become multilayered, but it would have betrayed that view of the world and the empathic-altruistic expectations of the victim. But would it betray a “naive reader”, who it is meant for? Our answer is that it would not since it turned out that that youngest reader is not as naive as it might seem at first sight and that narrative empathy represents above all and before all a reader’s response to the cry for humanity.

In the modern socio-cultural space, which is based on globalization processes, the principles of transculturalism and technocentrism, the idea of comprehension of the cultural code and value absolute manifestly comes itself to the forefront. The comic beginning as an aesthetic and cultural phenomenon is a way of expressing the value worldview system, it is verbalized as an ethno-marked substrate in the axiological picture of the world of the people. The article is devoted to the comprehension of the mode of the comic on the basis of the plays "The old hare" of N. Kolyada and "33 happiness" of O. Bogaev. This category is studied in the aesthetic and philosophical context as a way of dialogue with traditions, the search for national archetypes and overcoming the socio-cultural crisis. The dominant features of the poetics of the comic beginning, which is significantly complicated by philosophical searches are determined using the following artistic strategies: carnivalization (a system of images, models of heroes, linguistic experimentalism, plot-compositional beginning), irony, grotesque, binary opposition (tragic – comic), defamiliarisation, game intertextual beginning as a way of comprehending the cultural tradition and dialogue with the classics, mythologization, intermediality, artistic technique of the mask, trickster myth, the Menippean nature of the text canvas, the compositional structure of theater-in-the-theater, the motive of repetition. The signs of the semiotic system are analyzed as a way of expressing transitional thinking and the implementation of an axiological picture of the world: a goldfish (a symbol of deification of a miracle), an old man and an old woman (national archetypes, images of fairy-tale heroes), "Public Paradise", "Chungova Changa" (mythological codification, symbols of Paradise, resurrection of the soul), a hare (a symbol of a lost man in a crazy, insane world, a metaphor of a "little man"), a "dancing negrito" (a symbol of a "divine puppet", "a wonderful doll of the Gods"), a black beetle (a sign of an imminent meeting of heroes, a symbol of a lost soul, the semantics of crossing the semiotic border), a cat (a symbol of loneliness, wildness), "legs on a frosty window" (a symbol of a "little man").

The research deals with the concept of «world view». The subject matter of this paper is the Russian language picture of the world presented in the V. G. Korolenko’s stories, or more specifically, the study investigates basic peculiarities of the language picture of the world in two stories by V. G. Korolenko, the «Makar’s Dream» and «Without a Language». The article studies the linguistic worldview of the V. G. The author shows how the writer’s worldview changed influenced by the political, historic and cultural events of those days.He shows the Siberian land with its vast expanses, fierce winter, its own unique traditions and laws in the short story «Makar’s Dream». We can clearly see and feel this picture of the world thought the language prism, particularly in its bilingualism, in the lifestyle description, customs, characters of the heroes, etc.Another story «Without a Language» offers us an invaluable opportunity to compare Russian and American language picture of the world. The first one was shown by V. G. Korolenko as the homeland with its well-established, traditional way of life and old religion. And at the same time, the author has depicted America with its specific features, which differs from the Russian language picture of the world. According to his point of view, an American language picture of the world has a range of characteristic that differentiates it from the Russian. It has freedom, civilization, faith, and morals. V. G. Korolenko has skillfully used dialogues, descriptions, analyzes of the main characters, the Ukrainian-Russian bilingualism, foreign language inclusions in Russian speech, etc. In addition to this, some typical structures for both languages were found out which show national identity. It has been appealed to special linguistic methods and techniques, including the comparative historical method for comparing the facts of the modern language and the language of V. G. Korolenko, as well as the comparative method for comparing the Russian, Ukrainian, Yakut and English languages. The paper concludes that language is an integral part of the culture of the people, its basic tool of communication and socialization. It must be noted, that the culture is verbalized in the language. Each language is a unique code, which contains culturally marked information. This study proves the idea of the unbreakable link between language and culture. This is, in our opinion, the main value of the given research.

The demonolexis in Yu. Andrukhovych’s long short story “Recreatsii” (“Recreations”) has been analyzed in the article. In the course of the research there have been outlined the following lexical-semantic groups of demonomens: toponymic and onomastic names, modified lexemes, names of the rituals, genuine Ukrainian demonomens, obscene words and expressions, demonomens of Biblical origin, names from the world mythology and general demonolexis. The special lexical-semantic group has been formed by non personificated demonomens, which serve to convey the peculiarities of the contemporary Ukrainian writers’ mentality, their habits through speech. Such nomens help to reveal the protagonist’s soul, show the positive and negative sides of his personal ego, demonstrate the duality of the human perception of the world, indicate the causes of phobias, emotions, sensations. Key words: demonolexis, demonomen, lexical-semantic group, non personificated demonomen.

The article examines how selected works in Uganda’s first anthology of prison-authored work, As I Stood Dead before the World: Creative Writing from Luzira Prison (2018), handle one of the issues of paramount importance to inmates and their families: the possibility that convictions in courts of law are not foolproof since judicial officers are human beings and therefore susceptible to error. Drawing from four examples: two poems (Jackson O’s “Letter to Aber” and Sebuuma Gadafi’s “Twenty-Years”), one short story (Rachael Pearl Orishaba’s “A Secret”), and one short play (Jennifer Janette’s “What If It Wasn’t Kato?”), I show how different inmates imagine situations where judicial officers (prosecutors and magistrates/judges) make errors of judgement that see innocent people convicted of crimes they did not commit. The article closely reads the four selected pieces with the objective of investigating how creative writers can help judicial officers realise how important it is to turn every proverbial stone before a conviction is made.

Тhe subject of this study is the young Republic of South Sudan (RSS), the “young” – both in terms of the age of an independent state, and in terms of its demographic potential. RSS, as a member of the United Nations and as a sovereign state, appeared on the world map in 2011, but, possessing super-rich natural resources, has not yet gained sustainable development, moreover, it fell into a deep military-political crisis. Like most countries of the African continent, South Sudan had real demographic capacity, but the authorities were unable to extract any “demographic dividends” from the truly main national resource for the development of the country’s economy, moreover, the number of refugees of young working age is constantly growing. Through the example of South Sudan, which so hard achieved separation of the South from the North and failed to take advantage of the conquered democratic values, the article explores the understudied problem of modification of the consciousness of the younger generation, dictated both by the specifics of the deep historical and cultural tradition of the South Sudanese nationalities and by new trends in global evolutionary processes. Studying the stories from the lives of multi-member families affected during the military-political conflict in the RSS, the author, based on the facts, strongly criticizes the ineffective, even often vicious, youth policy of the South Sudanese government. On the other hand, analyzing the origins, nature, basic traditional moral and sociocultural aspects of child employment in the region, the researcher finds a reasoned explanation of the cause for such a policy of universal child mobilization and tries to define this phenomenon that has not been studied in the scientific literature before. Summarizing the study of the causes of a humanitarian catastrophe in the RSS, the author, in addition to generally accepted factors that influenced the current situation (such as: the intervention of major world financial players in the affairs of a sovereign state, national discord, the struggle for power and resources), also highlights the subjective and not always correct work of the world information agencies and other mass media and, of course, the incompetent state policy of the leadership of the RSS in the Youth Field. Relying on the positive events of the past few months to resolve the conflict in the RSS, the author is still trying to predict in the foreseeable future the time for growth and development of the Republic of South Sudan, with the proviso that it can happen only in case of the inclusion of restraining leverage and expansion of the range of priorities of the main national resource – the youth.

Annotation. The article discusses the landscape description. The landscape description is used in the work as an additional tool for aesthetic values and helps to reveal the images of heroes, and in the development of the action of the work/ The writer in the novel subtly uses the landscape description. The mountains are the sublime and the most valuable in a person, and the full moon is a happy state of mind of a person, and the transformation of a cloudless sky into a raging view indicates how restless the soul of the protagonist is, his restless thoughts. How his inner world is raging, and the swallows are restlessly flying, foreshadow the misfortune, the birds flying away ahead of time, the transformation of green grass, trees in the forehead the horrors of war. This article describes the idea of the story "Do not kill" which is given instead of the epilogue in the novel "When the mountains fall" which was written by Ch.Aitmatov. It considers the role of a story that calls to live in peace and to end wars that are occurring in the world. Keywords: Landscapе, novel, idea, legend, epilogue, hero, main event.

Recent decades have seen a major expansion in our understanding of how early Greek lyric functioned in its social, political, and ritual contexts. The fundamental role song played in the day-to-day lives of communities, groups, and individuals has been the object of intense study. This volume places its focus elsewhere, and attempts to illuminate poetic effects that cannot be captured in functional terms. Employing a range of interpretative methods, it explores the idea of lyric performances as textual events. Several chapters investigate the pragmatic relationship between real performance contexts and imaginative settings. Others consider how lyric poems position themselves in relation to earlier texts and textual traditions, or discuss the distinctive encounters lyric poems create between listeners, authors, and performers. In addition to studies that analyse individual lyric texts and lyric authors (Sappho, Alcaeus, Pindar), the volume includes treatments of the relationship between lyric and the Homeric Hymns. Building on the renewed concern with the aesthetic in the study of Greek lyric and beyond, Textual Events re-examines the relationship between the poems’ formal features and their historical contexts. Lyric poems are a type of sociopolitical discourse, but they are also objects of attention in themselves. They enable reflection on social and ritual practices as much as they are embedded within them. As well as enacting cultural norms, lyric challenges listeners to think about and experience the world afresh.
