The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of different daily intakes of rapeseed bee pollen on the growth and biochemical blood serum indicators in male and female rats. A total of 40 clinically healthy male and female Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups. In the control group (C) rats were fed a standard complete diet; in the experimental groups standard diets were supplemented with different doses of bee pollen. Treatment group T1 was given standard diet with the addition of bee pollen at a 0.3% concentration; in group T2 the addition was 0.5%; and in group T3 it was 0.75%. The experimental period lasted for 90 days. A significant effect (P < 0.05) of bee pollen on the body weight gain and feed conversion ratio of female rats was found. Significantly (P < 0.05) higher cholesterol concentration in blood serum of male rats was found in the groups with bee pollen addition (groups T2 and T3) compared to the control group. Lower triglyceride serum content in all female experimental groups (T1 and T3) was observed in comparison to the control. Higher serum cholesterol content in the experimental female rats was detected; significant differences were analysed in groups T1 and T3 compared to the control female group. Rapeseed bee pollen at concentrations of 0.5 and 0.75% positively affected the body weight gain of female rats, however, with higher feed consumption (P < 0.05). Rapeseed bee pollen reduced the triglycerides serum content in female rats and increased the cholesterol serum content in male and female rats (P < 0.05).

Forty male and 40 female Crl:SD® CD® IGS rats were fed diets containing 0, 40 000, 80 000, or 120 000 ppm tamarind seed polysaccharide (equivalent to 3450.8, 6738.9, or 10 597.1 mg/kg bw/day and 3602.1, 7190.1, or 10 690.7 mg/kg bw/day for males and females, respectively) for 28 days. Animals were observed for adverse clinical signs, body weight, feed consumption, hematology and clinical chemistry parameters, urinalysis values were recorded, and at the end of the study the rats underwent a full necropsy. Functional Observational Battery (FOB) and Motor Activity (MA) tests were performed on all animals. There were no mortalities, no clinical or ophthalmologic signs, body weight, body weight gain, food consumption and food efficiency, FOB or MA findings associated with the administration of tamarind seed polysaccharide. Initial statistically significant decreases in body weight gain and food consumption resolved after the first week and were considered the result of reduced palatability. There were no adverse changes in hematology, coagulation, clinical chemistry or urinalysis parameters in male or female rats considered the result of test substance administration. At necropsy, there were no macroscopic, histopathological findings, estrus cycle, or organ weight changes deemed related to administration of the test substance. Under the conditions of this study and based on the toxicological endpoints evaluated, the no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) for tamarind seed polysaccharide in the diet was the highest concentration tested of 120 000 ppm (equivalent to 10 597 mg/kg bw/day and 10 691 mg/kg bw/day for male and female rats, respectively).

Male and female Sprague-Dawley-derived rats received CdCl2 by gavage at doses of 25, 51, 107, and 225 mg CdCl2 per kg body weight per day for 1 or 10 consecutive days or in drinking solutions at concentrations of 13–323 mg CdCl2 per liter for 10 consecutive days. There were appropriate controls. In the 1 day study in males only, an apparent treatment-related but not statistically significant decrease in body weight was reported; spleen weights and ratios were significantly lower and lung weights and ratios were significantly higher (in the highest dose only). Dose-dependent mortality was observed in the 10 day gavage study. Body weight gain was depressed in a dose-dependent manner in both males and females. Weights and/or ratios of brain, liver, spleen, lungs, thymus, kidneys, and testes of treated males were depressed in a dose-dependent manner. In females, weights and/or ratios of liver, spleen, thymus, and kidneys were depressed in a dose-dependent manner. Focal necrotic changes in renal tubular epithelium and tubular degeneration were reported in males and females. Testicular and hepatic histopathologic changes (testicular atrophy and necrosis and hepatic necrosis) were also reported in males. In the drinking water study, males demonstrated dose-dependent decreases in body weight gain and weight and/or ratios of liver, spleen, thymus, and kidneys. There were no significant compound-related effects in females, although liver weights and ratios were lower. There were no compound-related histopathologic effects.

Male and female rats were fed standard laboratory chow or a highly palatable diet (cafeteria diet) for 10 wk. The cafeteria diet caused an increase in caloric intake and in body weight, and it induced thermogenesis that was associated with elevated plasma triiodothyronine (T3) levels, increased brown adipose tissue size, and enhanced metabolic response to norepinephrine. For a comparable caloric intake, body-weight gain was significantly greater in female than in male rats possibly because of difference in thermogenesis as suggested by the response to norepinephrine. Exercise training (swimming 2 h/day for 10 wk) reduced food intake and body-weight gain and failed to increase norepinephrine-induced thermogenesis in rats fed laboratory chow. In animals fed the cafeteria diet, food intake and body-weight gain were also reduced by exercise training, which at the same time diminished the diet-induced thermogenesis as evidenced by the diminution of 1) brown fat hypertrophy, 2) the elevation of plasma T3, and 3) the hyperthermic response to injected norepinephrine. It is suggested that the thyroid hormone and catecholamines through their actions on the brown adipose tissue are the important regulatory of thermogenesis. Exercise training would reduce the diet-induced thermogenesis by preventing increased T3 production. Enhanced thermogenesis may be considered an adaptive reaction as it serves to reduce fat deposition in animals fed cafeteria diet and to promote nonshivering heat production in the cold. On the other hand, exercise training reduces thermogenesis and thus prevents energy wasting.

Majoon-e-Nisyan (MJN) is a polyherbal semisolid compound formulation. Its description is present in various Unani literatures. It is used in Unani medicine for its therapeutic efficacy against amnesia. There is no report regarding its safety on long term administration. Therefore, toxicological evaluation of MJN is carried out in rats. Majoon-e-Nisyan was subjected to 90-days repeated oral dose toxicity studies as per OECD guide line 408. Wistar rats were treated at three dose levels i.e., 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg bw and one vehicle treated group. MJN and vehicle were orally administered daily for 90 days and animal were observed for clinical signs of toxicity, mortality, body weight and feed consumption. On completion of 90-days, blood samples were collected and analyzed for hematology and biochemistry. Necropsy was performed on all survived animals and vital organs were collected and subjected to histopathology. No post dose adverse effect was reported on survival of both male and female rats after oral administration of MJN for 90 days. No incidence of mortality was reported in MJN treated male and female rats at all tested dose levels. No abnormal clinical signs were observed in MNJ treated animals at 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg bw as compared to animals of control group. No significant changes were observed in biochemistry, hematology and histopathological examination. No incidence of mortality, adverse changes in clinical signs of toxicity or body weight gain of rats was noted. No changes in clinical chemistry, hematology, and histopathology were observed in MJN-treated or control group. Therefore, NOAEL for MJN may be considered more than 2000 mg/kg bw in rats. Wistar rats (25/ sex • group) and CD-1 mice (30/sex • group) were fed either a control diet or diet supplemented with N,N-dimethylformamide at the levels of 215, 750, and 2500 ppm for rats and 160,540, and 1850 ppm for mice. The duration of feeding was 104 days for rats and 119 days for mice. Body weight gain, food consumption, hematological and clinical chemical data, ophthalmic, gross, and microscopic examinations were used to study possible toxic or pathologic effects. A significant reduction in body weight gain was noted for male and female rats at the high dosage level. Food consumption in male rats at the high-dosage level and female rats at both the middle- and high-dosage levels was decreased. A significant dose-related increase in relative liver weights was noted in male and female rats. Absolute liver weights of male rats were comparable among groups, however, a dose-related increase was noted in female rats. No significant differences among groups were noted in body weight and food consumption data for mice. A significant dose-related increase in relative and absolute liver weights was noted in male and female mice. Histopathological evaluation revealed no evidence of a toxic effect related to feeding of N.N-dimethylformamide to Wistar rats and CD-1 mice. The increase in liver weight is considered to be a normal phenomenon (physiological adaptation) required for the biotransformation of N,N-dimethylformamide. The lack of hepatotoxicity in the present study may be the result of feeding N,N-dimethylf ormamide over waking hours versus bolus dosing (in other studies) in which hepatotoxicity was noted.

Two trials were conducted to determine feed color effects on broiler performance. A completely randomized design was used. Trial 1 included four treatments: control (complete broiler starter diet), red, green, and blue; and Trial 2 included four treatments: control, orange, yellow, and purple. Each trial had 4 treatments with 4 replicates (60 birds/treatment) fed to 240 male Cobb 500 broilers during a 21 d grow out. Data were analyzed using the GLM procedure. In Trial 1, there were no treatment effects on average body weight, body weight gain, and feed consumption (p > 0.05). Adjusted feed conversion for control (1.23) was less than red (1.27; p = 0.001) and green (1.26; p = 0.009), with blue (1.25; p = 0.056) tending to be different during the experimental period. In Trial 2, there were no treatment effects on average body weight, feed consumption, and adjusted feed conversion during this study (p > 0.05). Body weight gain between d 1 to 14 for purple (490.78 g/bird) was more than orange (467 g/bird; p = 0.013) and yellow (461 g/bird; p= 0.004), with control (474 g/bird; p = 0.052) tending to be different. Results indicate that these feed colors had some, albeit limited, influence on broiler performance parameters.
