The Kenya Adolescent Reproductive Health Project (KARHP) was launched in October 1999 in Busia and Vihiga districts as a three-year operations research study to determine the feasibility, cost, and effectiveness of implementing systematic interventions that address the reproductive health (RH) needs of adolescents aged 10–19 years. This USAID-funded project is part of the Population Council’s Frontiers in Reproductive Health Program’s global operations research. PATH (Program for Appropriate Technology in Health) is implementing the project, in collaboration with the Ministries of Health, Education, and Home Affairs, Heritage, and Sports. The objective of the study is to establish the effectiveness of interventions designed to increase adolescents’ RH knowledge, delay the onset of sexual activity, increase adolescent use of RH services, and reduce risky sexual behavior. The community-based intervention comprises two components. The first is geared toward sensitizing stakeholders in the community about the need for adolescent RH services and information. The second provides services and information to adolescents through out-of-school peer educators. This document provides an update on the KARHP project.

One of the parties that has a role in the field of adolescent reproductive health is the youth center. This research examined health communication about reproductive and sexual health at the PILAR PKBI Youth Center, Central Java. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The theoretical framework used the Logic Model. Informants were determined by purposive sampling with a total of 19 people. The data collection method was by in-depth interviews via Whatsapp and focus group discussions through Zoom meetings due to the pandemic situation. Data was analyzed with thematic analysis. Research ethics used the Helinski Declaration rules and informed consent. The results of the research were 1) The issues raised were in accordance with the CSE material; 2) The goal is to increase youth care and responsibility; 3) Inputs owned by trained human resources and adequate funding sources; 4) The communication process runs with educational activities, empowerment, and counseling with strategies for the formation of PE, lobbying, advocacy, and collaborative activities, as well as the materials and media, used vary widely according to the target; 5) Communication outputs are the establishment of peer educators and stakeholder support; 6) The results of the communication program are the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of target adolescents are qualitatively good. The health communication carried out by PILAR and the results obtained is quite good. Adolescent reproductive and sexuality health in Indonesia is still low, this can be seen from the many cases of pregnancy out of wedlock, violence during courtship and abortion with high-risk drugs. The understanding of adolescents about reproductive health is the provision of adolescents in healthy and responsible behavior. But not all teenagers get information about reproductive health. This limitation of knowledge and understanding can bring teenagers towards risky behavior. This is a lack of information about sexuality and reproduction. Cadres health has a big role in realizing the optimal level of community health. Community service is carried out in two (2) junior high schools, namely Dharma Pancasila Private Junior High School (260 students and 21 cadres trained) and Al-Fhatiyan Private Middle School Medan (199 students and cadres trained by 16 students). The method used is by: 1. counseling with material on adolescent reproductive health; 2. cadre training; 3. Cadre mentoring. Evaluation of program success: pre test and post test cadres and student participants. Based on the results of the questionnaires distributed to students, the majority of data was 13 years old (47.5%), male sex (54%), high school parents education (62%) and entrepreneurial work (96.6%). The results of the dependent test obtained data, average knowledge before health education 26.23 and after health education39.58. The mean difference is 13,349 and the standard deviation is 3,911 and 95% CI 13,707-12,990. Based on the results of statistical tests obtained P = 0.001, it can be concluded that there is an influence of adolescent reproductive health cadres on student knowledge. For attitudes obtained data on average attitudes before counseling 27.57 and after counseling 39.58. The mean difference is 13,349 and the standard deviation is 3,802 and 95% CI 12,362 - 11,664. P value = 0.001 it can be concluded that there is an influence of adolescent reproductive health cadres on student attitudes. This PKM activity is useful in increasing knowledge and attitudes towards adolescent reproductive health. With increased knowledge of the behavior of adolescents to risky sexual behavior, and if the attitudes of adolescents towards sexual behavior are good, it is expected that sexually well and adolescents are expected to be responsible for their reproductive healthKeywords: cadres, education, health, reproduction, adolescents

MA Maslahatul Hidayah is a school located in Errabu Village, Bluto District. MA Maslahatul Hidayah is within the scope of the Maslahatul Hidayah boarding school. The number of students at MA Maslahatul Hidayah is 60 people. After the initial interview, it was found that most of the students did not understand about adolescent reproductive health including premarital sex, abortion, HIV / AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, and in MA Maslahatul Hidayah there were no Peer Educators or peer groups that could be used as a container to tell and even provide counseling about reproductive health, especially in adolescents. Talking about reproductive health is considered a taboo by some students at MA Maslahatul Hidayah because they are in a boarding school environment, not only that there are some students who choose to drop out of school prematurely due to marriage under the age of 17 years. Culture and religion in Errabu Village are still quite thick and highly respected by the existence of this boarding school. The purpose of this PKM is to form a Peer Educator and increase students' Knowledge about Reproductive Health. The benefit of this activity is expected that with the existence of this PKM the knowledge of students about Reproductive Health will increase, so that the level of reproductive health of students increases. The method used is training and counseling. The results obtained are that this peer educator is very useful for MA Maslahatu Hidayah students, they are not awkward to consult with peer educators about the problems they face, especially regarding reproductive health and after counseling about reproductive health students become more understanding and understand the importance of maintaining reproduction health. Informing adolescents about appropriate and acceptable behaviors, and ways to protect themselves against unwanted and unprotected sex, has proved problematic in Kenya. Education programs for in- and out-of-school adolescents are lacking, there is controversy about providing services to sexually active adolescents, and a pervasive concern that sexuality education and contraceptive services leads to promiscuity. Unbiased and accurate information and services are needed if adolescents are to delay becoming sexually active, to resist pressures to engage in nonconsensual sex, and to protect themselves against unwanted pregnancies and infections if they do have sex. Moreover, strategies for providing such information and services need to be acceptable to the community and sustainable over time. The Population Council’s Frontiers in Reproductive Health Program and the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health Kenya office collaborated with three government of Kenya ministries to design and implement a multisectoral project to improve knowledge about reproductive health and encourage a responsible and healthy attitude toward sexuality among adolescents, delay the onset of sexual activity among younger adolescents, and decrease risky behaviors among sexually active adolescents. Three interventions were implemented and evaluated in two districts in Western Province and this report presents findings that directly evaluate and cost the interventions.
