MA Maslahatul Hidayah is a school located in Errabu Village, Bluto District. MA Maslahatul Hidayah is within the scope of the Maslahatul Hidayah boarding school. The number of students at MA Maslahatul Hidayah is 60 people. After the initial interview, it was found that most of the students did not understand about adolescent reproductive health including premarital sex, abortion, HIV / AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, and in MA Maslahatul Hidayah there were no Peer Educators or peer groups that could be used as a container to tell and even provide counseling about reproductive health, especially in adolescents. Talking about reproductive health is considered a taboo by some students at MA Maslahatul Hidayah because they are in a boarding school environment, not only that there are some students who choose to drop out of school prematurely due to marriage under the age of 17 years. Culture and religion in Errabu Village are still quite thick and highly respected by the existence of this boarding school. The purpose of this PKM is to form a Peer Educator and increase students' Knowledge about Reproductive Health. The benefit of this activity is expected that with the existence of this PKM the knowledge of students about Reproductive Health will increase, so that the level of reproductive health of students increases. The method used is training and counseling. The results obtained are that this peer educator is very useful for MA Maslahatu Hidayah students, they are not awkward to consult with peer educators about the problems they face, especially regarding reproductive health and after counseling about reproductive health students become more understanding and understand the importance of maintaining reproduction health. The longstanding conflict and civil strife in Burma has had significant consequences on the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) of ethnic minority groups, including adolescents. The Adolescent Reproductive Health Zone in Chiang Mai, Thailand promotes adolescent SRH rights and access to services by having peer educators travel to their hometowns in Burma and lead intensive youth-focused trainings on a variety of topics and issues. In order to evaluate the impact of an intensive three-day workshop dedicated to improving knowledge of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among peer educators through didactic, experiential, and skill-building exercises, we administered a pre-, post-, and longitudinal assessment. All 13 participants completed both the pre-test and post-test; 11 of 13 participants (85%) completed the longitudinal evaluation administered three months after the training. Our results indicate that both individual and aggregate STI knowledge increased from baseline and that this knowledge was retained. Moreover, the training increased participants’ confidence in their outreach abilities, informed changes in the curricular modules, and led to the implementation of new teaching and learning techniques, especially the incorporation of games and activities. Our findings showcase a successful initiative and suggest similar adolescent peer health educator programs could be undertaken in this protracted crisis and conflict setting.

The Kenya Adolescent Reproductive Health Project (KARHP) was launched in October 1999 in Busia and Vihiga districts as a three-year operations research study to determine the feasibility, cost, and effectiveness of implementing systematic interventions that address the reproductive health (RH) needs of adolescents aged 10–19 years. This USAID-funded project is part of the Population Council’s Frontiers in Reproductive Health Program’s global operations research. PATH (Program for Appropriate Technology in Health) is implementing the project, in collaboration with the Ministries of Health, Education, and Home Affairs, Heritage, and Sports. The objective of the study is to establish the effectiveness of interventions designed to increase adolescents’ RH knowledge, delay the onset of sexual activity, increase adolescent use of RH services, and reduce risky sexual behavior. The community-based intervention comprises two components. The first is geared toward sensitizing stakeholders in the community about the need for adolescent RH services and information. The second provides services and information to adolescents through out-of-school peer educators. This document provides an update on the KARHP project.

Senegal is undergoing rapid urbanization, leading to changes in traditional social and family structure. With these changes there is a rise in early sexual activity among young adults, and increased exposure to unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In Senegal, where 28 percent of the population is 10–19 years of age, a renewed focus on reproductive health (RH) services appears timely. In 1999, FRONTIERS began testing the feasibility, effectiveness, and cost of several interventions to improve the RH of youth. The study took place in three urban communities in northern Senegal. Two served as intervention sites where community- and clinic-based interventions were offered (and in one a school-based intervention was included). One served as a control site. The community intervention included sensitization on adolescent RH for community and religious leaders, communication with parents, and education sessions. As part of the clinic-based intervention, providers and peer educators were trained to offer youth-friendly services. The school-based intervention trained teachers and peer educators to provide RH information to in-school and out-of-school youth. As noted in this brief, the intervention increased community awareness and improved young people’s knowledge.
