Public transportation is one of the sustainable form of transportation which provides mobility options for the people. The public transport services are very basic need of people’s lives, especially in developing world. It is the basic means for mobility of a large percent of people and hence it is the driving force of economic and social life. Quality of service, characterized by the Level-of-Service (LoS) is one of the major factors determining the demand for public transport. This study tries to determine the city-wide Level-of-Service provided by the public transport system using the service level benchmarks as a case study of Trivandrum city. The indicators for determining the Level-of-Service used in the study are presence of organized public transport system, availability or extend of public transport supply, service coverage, average waiting time, level of comfort in public transport and the fleet availability. This approach can be used to determine the LoS at the city-level and thus provides a measure for identifying the public transport quality of an urban area.

Transport accessibility is an area of growing global attention among transportation planners and policymakers. This paper aims to portray spatiotemporal variations of car and public bus accessibility in the context of a city in a developing country: Dhaka, Bangladesh. The public bus system in Dhaka is characterized by a semi-formal arrangement which means there is a lack of available data, for example, General Transit Feed Specification, which poses great difficulties in the study of accessibility. Given these limitations, we have presented the concept of major destinations to analyze spatiotemporal accessibility based on the simple understanding that trip purposes, time of day, and trip destinations are interlinked in an urban area, and different locations would attract a different number of trips based on the time of day. Using a spatial autocorrelation approach, we identified the statistically significant destination clusters in Dhaka by peak and off-peak hours. We measured accessibility to the major destinations using a cumulative opportunity-based metric followed by estimation of the Modal Accessibility Gap (MAG). The findings indicated that, regardless of the trip origins and time of day, dependence on public transport puts the users in a substantially disadvantageous position. From the policy perspective, we have suggested the introduction of a formal public transport system in Dhaka, particularly targeting the traffic analysis zones with higher MAG. Such an approach would lead to better resource usage while providing enhanced public transport services for both peak and off-peak hours and limiting dependence on cars.

The role of public transport services is crucial in ensuring mobility. The Sultanate of Oman has shown a remarkable growth in the last three decades in almost all areas except in the development of public transport infrastructure and services. Currently, Public transportation is a pressing concern for Oman and is attracting much attention, especially in light of increasing traffic congestion and safety concerns. This research followed a public needs assessment and opinion survey approach and covered 2000 respondents in the Al Batinah region of Oman. A quantitative analysis was initially performed using the SPSS, which was later followed by a qualitative analysis. The specific objectives were to conduct a socio-economic feasibility analysis towards the establishment of an effective public transport system in Oman and to study residents’ requirements, sharing habits, traveling behaviors, expenditure and expectations towards public transport in Oman. The study concludes that public transportation in Oman is still in its infancy, and the introduction of a public transport system has taken an unusually long time. People realize the need for a better system, but their knowledge of different transport modes and their use is very limited. People’s attitudes towards using public transport are positive; however, they much prefer to use their own cars. The nearest substitute to the personal car is the taxi, which largely fulfills the role of public transport, barring very few bus lines. On the socio-economic front, this study does not find any major obstacles to the adoption and use of public transportation in Oman.

Overall satisfaction is an emotional response to a perceived discrepancy between expectations and perceptions. Overall satisfaction is more of a holistic affective construct after a service delivery experience, while transaction-specific satisfaction refers to attribute-based cognitive evaluation of service encounters. The authors investigated which particular attributes of public transport service drive satisfaction of customers, contributing to public transport becoming more sustainable. The questionnaire used in this research was constructed based on Benchmarking in European Service of Public Transport (BEST). The respondents belonged to the group of younger users of public transport services. Correlation analysis, factor analysis, and regression analysis were used in data processing and interpretation. Results obtained from the research show that young people emphasize the importance of on-line information, comfort, and prices of the public transportation. This paper not only provides insight into expectations of public transport users, but also investigated the potential decrease in CO2 and PM emissions when private vehicles are substituted with the public transport.
