This article discusses the organizational and economic problems of the functioning of public transport in the city of Novosibirsk using the example of the Municipal treasury enterprise ‘Passenger Motor Transport Enterprise No. 4’. The main objective of the study is to find ways to solve problems which arise at this enterprise and which are common for urban passenger transport in a large city. The article analyzes the results of the enterprise, as well as the transport situation in Novosibirsk. The growth of the private car fleet significantly worsened the state of the urban environment in most cities of Russia and created a number of difficult to solve problems. Based on the study of solutions to similar problems in other cities and countries, the conclusion is drawn about the need for the accelerated development of urban passenger transport in comparison with other modes of transport. The search for effective ways to influence the behavior of transport users will make it possible to create a ‘healthy city’ that forms the necessary safety and quality of life for citizens.

The paper discusses problems related to the functioning of passenger transport in Rzeszow. The dynamic development of the city and the increase in the income of its inhabitants have led to significantly increased traffic within the city, which is detrimental both to the environment and the city’s inhabitants. It limits the quality of life in the city and in the end generates additional costs for businesses and people in urban areas due to the congestion. In compliance with the policies of the European Union, this harmful tendency needs to be limited. Developing sustainable transportation should largely contribute to this objective. With the city of Rzeszow as example, this article discusses selected actions and measures taken as part of the development of sustainable transportation and demonstrates changes in the functioning of public transport based on the author’s own research as well as data provided by the city’s authorities. The analyses show that the actions taken so far have had a positive impact.

The goal of the study is to make a comparative analysis of the dynamics of indices of economic indicators and sufficiency indicators used to calculate an urban environment quality index of a Russian municipality. The city of Kirov, Russia, was taken as a sample for the study, which went on from 2012 through 2018. The analysis demonstrated practically no statistically significant correlations in the dynamics of indices of individual subgroups of indicators, as well as in the dynamics of indices of individual indicators, although with a few exceptions. The results of the study confirm the need to improve the methodology of calculating the integral indices of cities and regions. These indices are related to urban ecology, quality of life, and sustainable development issues. The results also demonstrated the inadequacy of such tools for systematic and comprehensive international analysis of today urbanization problems.
