The aging of the Spanish population, with a life expectancy of eighty-five years for women and eighty years for men, has caused many of these people to develop geriatric syndromes that prevent them from living in a totally independent way, either due to a physical limitation of mobility or functional limitations. Dysphagia is the symptom referring to the difficulty or discomfort that occurs during the passage of the food bolus from the mouth to the stomach. Method: The type of study proposed in this work is a cross-sectional observational study. This study has been carried out in a nursing home located in the town of Huéscar, in the province of Granada. There are currently 90 people who reside in the aforementioned residence and to whom the following inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. Results: The population that meets the inclusion criteria of the study is 31 patients, of which 65% are women and 35% are men, with a mean age of 85.3 years. The sarcopenia test will be performed on the subjects after completing the EAT-10 in the admission consultations and in the successive reviews. Discussion: Prevention, our best weapon. In view of the results obtained, we can affirm that dysphagia is an important health problem in geriatric patients, following the trend of previous studies. In order to quantify the power of prevention in the appearance of dysphagia and its consequences, it is necessary to carry out long-term studies where a case population and a control population are compared and disease results are obtained whether these habits are followed or not. Conclusions: Dysphagia can cause important problems in the nutritional status of patients and the consequences that this entails. This is seen with greater intensity in patients with a high degree of dependence. In our study, obvious worse nutritional states and worse quality of life indices are observed in those patients with associated dysphagia. The use of easily applied tests in institutionalized populations makes it possible to reveal the presence of dysphagia, as well as the risk of malnutrition and sarcopenia. Its implementation in nursing homes is necessary, as a first step to carry out an in-depth study of the nutritional status of the residents.

Quality of life issues in head and neck cancer have been portrayed increasingly in the medical literature in recent decades. Reports vary in sample size and study design but the majority are cross-sectional and suffer from inherent bias. Many of the patients’ complaints in cancer of the head and neck manifest close linkage to problems related to the oral cavity. Frequent specific problems are trismus, pain, xerostomia, and speech and swallowing disorders. Although quality of life is multifactorial and subjective, some improvement may be achieved by recognizing and addressing problems during the course of treatment. More longitudinal long-term studies are indicated in order to better define quality of life along the time axis.

Abstract Objective To summarize the current literature on disparities in the treatment of chronic pain. Methods We focused on studies conducted in the United States and published from 2000 and onward. Studies of cross-sectional, longitudinal, and interventional designs were included. Results A review of the current literature revealed that an adverse association between non-White race and treatment of chronic pain is well supported. Studies have also shown that racial differences exist in the long-term monitoring for opioid misuse among patients suffering from chronic pain. In addition, a patient’s sociodemographic profile appears to influence the relationship between chronic pain and quality of life. Results from interventional studies were mixed. Conclusions Disparities exist within the treatment of chronic pain. Currently, it is unclear how to best combat these disparities. Further work is needed to understand why disparities exist and to identify points in patients’ treatment when they are most vulnerable to unequal care. Such work will help guide the development and implementation of effective interventions.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the dietary intake and overall diet quality of female soccer players before the competitive games. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study included 21 women aged 20.8±4.5 years from a professional soccer team. Their nutritional status and dietary adequacy during the training period, before competition season, were assessed. Dietary intake was assessed by three 24-hour recalls, one food frequency questionnaire, and the Healthy Eating Index, an overall diet quality index based on food group intake. Results: The athletes have shown proper nutritional status, but a diet deficient in energy due largely to low carbohydrate intake. On the other hand, the intakes of protein, fatty acids, and sodium were above the recommended intakes, even for athletes. Diet quality assessment by the Healthy Eating Index - 2010 resulted in a mean score of 54.6 points of a maximum of 100, indicating a need of improving the overall diet quality. Conclusion: The study found that the dietary patterns of female football players were both quantitatively and qualitatively inappropriate. A nutritional intervention is indicated to improve diet quality, with the inclusion of various foods, such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and better protein quality, along with a reduction in saturated fats, sodium, and added sugar.
