The first five years of an educator's career are the most important time in determining if they will stay in the education profession. With the stress of starting a new career, novice teachers are often asked to do the most work. To help them navigate through the first few years of teaching and to increase retention, Missouri has adopted a mentoring policy. This narrative study describes mentee and mentor perception of the mentoring program and how they feel it affects their professional and personal lives. This study opens the doors to show what mentees and mentors feel is beneficial about the mentoring program and what is needed to make it better.

AbstractDifferent disciplinary groups are increasingly questioning current conceptualisations of young adults' educational, social and personal lives after compulsory schooling. New perspectives are being advanced on the life trajectories of choice and complexity now experienced by school leavers. A consistent theme is the changed nature of young adults' lives, reflecting social and economic pressures on educational, work and personal life goals. This age group has the highest incidence of mental disorders of any age cohort (Andrews, Hall, Teesson, & Henderson, 1999). The changed learning environment in the move to university entails life and environmental events that create risk conditions for young adults. In these circumstances varying degrees of loss, challenge and personal growth exist. Concurrent personal losses, such as death of a peer or family member, broken love relationships, and failure to achieve the dream of a future career, can create particular vulnerabilities. Loss may interfere with the natural progression of intellectual–emotional–psychological growing up (Kastenbaum, 2001). In this article the mental health of young adults is viewed through the lens of loss experiences within a context of change in their life trajectory. Data is drawn from a mixed method study involving questionnaire completion and in-depth interviews of students in four university campuses in New South Wales.

Mentoring creates opportunities for guidance, collaboration, partnerships, career development, personal growth, problem solving, leadership, and scholarly advancement among others. Mentoring is not a new concept to health care or to nursing. Nurses and others in the health care field depend on various individuals for their career growth and developmental networking. Doctor of nursing practice (DNP) graduates are encouraged to collaborate with other disciplines, assume leadership roles, and serve as mentors at the clinical, educational, or executive level. Mentoring relationships are essential for the DNP graduate to continue growing scholarly, professionally, and personally.

   Background: Mentoring is the relationship of a guide or a teacher with another person/student augmenting his/her carrier growth, knowledge, skills, and experiences implemented by caring, sharing and helping hands. The aim of this paper is to highlight the mentoring, type of mentoring, how important of matching and consideration of ethical issue in mentoring program. Not missing these significant points, mentoring program could be successful in universities including medical faculty.  Methods: The SMART principles of specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound are essential to structure the matching between mentor and mentee. The rule of etiquette and ethical issues are crucial and beneficial for mentor mentee relationship. Clinical mentoring programs help to develop students’ clinical skills and can increase interest in under-subscribed specialties. Positive mentoring plays a part in reversing the decline of academic medicine, by sparking interest through early research experiences.  Results: There is the short term goal which is to introduce an immediate support network for incoming students and the long term goal is to cultivate a mentoring culture to engage all strata of medical students and every faculty member. Medical students expressed that mentoring program is to provide counselling, develop professionalism, increase students' interest in research, and support them in their personal growth.  Conclusion: The goal of mentorship is to provide additional support to student or mentee by steering of the academic needs or social prerequisites to accelerate the personal and professional development of mentee with advice, guide and feed backs from the mentor.

Teachers leaving the profession before age of retirement is an ongoing problem in schools worldwide. While fewer teachers enter the profession each year, the number of teachers leaving the profession has increased. Many teachers listed lack of job satisfaction as a reason for leaving the education profession, while citing the lack of mentoring as a main cause of job dissatisfaction. This study explores the impact of an effective mentoring program at primary schools in the province of Mpumalanga, South Africa to support and improve job satisfaction among beginner teachers entering the profession. This study follows a quantitative approach, consisting of a Likert-scale questionnaire. The sample of the study was a number of 550 teachers (principals, deputy principals, heads of department, teachers and student teachers) from different races and cultures from 50 randomly selected state and private primary schools in Mpumalanga. After comparing the literature with the respondents' data, the researchers found that the development and implementation of a mentoring program in the province of Mpumalanga would positively impacts beginner teachers' job satisfaction, thus indicating a definite need for such a mentoring program.

Backgrounds. To investigate whether a formal mentoring program involving mentors from the business community could improve the quality of life (QoL) of sarcoma survivors struggling with the late effects of treatment. Methods. Seven former sarcoma patients participated in an eight-month formal mentoring program. The program was assessed through a qualitative study involving a phenomenological approach that utilized a hermeneutical design. In-depth, semistructured interviews were conducted with the mentees after the intervention and six months later. The mentors were interviewed after the program was over. The gathered data were interpreted using a thematic analysis. Results. The program facilitated dialogue between the mentors and mentees as well as between the mentees. Afterwards, the mentees were more willing to accept the challenges they faced following cancer treatment. During the program, the mentees were pushed out of their comfort zone, which led to mastery and personal growth in them all. However, the program also revealed some additional challenges, including unfulfilled expectations in two mentor-mentee relationships. Conclusions. The mentoring program facilitated the mentees’ reorientation and enhanced their QoL. Its eight-month duration appeared important in terms of allowing the mentees to go through a long-lasting process with continued support. The program could serve as the basis for larger studies involving other cancer survivors.

Background: Burnout is harmful and frequently experienced by medical residents. Causes of burnout are numerous. To date, there have been no qualitative studies incorporating semistructured interviews and resident-taken photographs on their perspectives of burnout. This method is advantageous for its ability to explore the lived experience of burnout, in depth. Objective: The purpose of this study is to discover, through photographs and semistructured interviews, medical residents’ perspectives on what burnout means in their lives and how they manage burnout experiences. Methods: In 2017, 8 residents from Internal Medicine and Family Medicine Residency Programs at a large, Midwestern academic medical center participated in this study. The Transcendental Phenomenological Method was used to analyze the data collected through semistructured interviews, which used resident photographs as a guide. Results: Residency training was often described as a challenging experience, particularly because it took away residents’ ability to focus on their personal lives due to long work hours. This often resulted in exhaustion, self-doubt, and damaged or neglected relationships. Despite this, residents took active steps to mitigate burnout through a variety of coping strategies. In addition, residents found camaraderie, joy, and personal growth during their residency experience. Conclusion: Burnout continues to be an important topic in medical education and specifically for medical residents. Learning more about how burnout is perceived and the effects of burnout on residents day-to-day lives can guide the future development of strategies to promote wellness and minimize the impact of burnout.

The primary purpose of this research was to find out what novice teachers in Turkey think about the new mentoring program introduced by the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) in February, 2016. In order to collect more detailed data and gain a deep insight regarding research problem, qualitative research methods were preferred. The study group consisted of 22 newly appointed teachers during the 2016 academic term. A semi-structured interview form was used as data collection instrument. According to the results novice teachers think that the new mentoring program is beneficial in terms of classroom management, communication skills, professional efficacy; extending network and gaining experience. As for the disadvantages of the program, the novice teachers stated that they cannot choose their mentor teachers, the mentor teachers do not know the program in detail as it was used for the first time, there are a lot of trivial forms that novice teachers and mentor teachers had to fill in.

Since language learning relates to learners’ life events, Learning Advisors (advisors) who are professionals in promoting learner autonomy through conducting reflective dialogue with learners, often tap into learners’ life stories in advising sessions. The previous studies on the life narrative approach indicate that storytellers construct personal meaning and stronger self-image while telling their stories (Bruner, 1990; Erikson, 1968). Atkinson (1998) indicates that creating visual images ahead of time could help storytellers prepare to tell their life stories. This study investigates the effects of drawing a ‘picture of life’ (PL) and sharing it in the first session of a professional development (PD) program where one-to-one mentoring sessions were conducted between five experienced advisors and the author during a period of six months. Data were collected from written journals and post-mentoring questionnaires. A qualitative analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of conducting the PL activity in the first session. The results showed that the PL activity not only helped the storytellers bring new insights and meanings to their professional and personal lives, but also it served as a ‘point to return to’ which became a strong thread throughout the following sessions.
