During the 1990s, governments and the education profession noticed that boys were lagging behind girls academically. Reading, or the lack or it was pinpointed as a major cause and it was observed in an Auckland high school library that significantly more books were issued to girls than boys over a six month period in 2004. The purpose of this study was to achieve a deeper understanding of how a purposefully selected sample of school librarians has successfully encouraged boys to read. A qualitative approach was employed using two methods of data collection: a questionnaire to gather largely statistical data and in-depth interviews to gather data about participants' experiences, knowledge and opinions. The study found that school librarians use a variety of strategies to promote reading to boys. A school library needs to be well stocked with a wide range of current, appealing, reading materials as boys are discerning, hybrid readers. Knowing the students and the library collection was central to matching boys with books and the library needs to be more than a book repository. It is concluded that Ranganathan's 'Five laws of library science' are still applicable today in the school library and school librarians need to be a professional, visible and approachable presence in the school.

Teachers leaving the profession before age of retirement is an ongoing problem in schools worldwide. While fewer teachers enter the profession each year, the number of teachers leaving the profession has increased. Many teachers listed lack of job satisfaction as a reason for leaving the education profession, while citing the lack of mentoring as a main cause of job dissatisfaction. This study explores the impact of an effective mentoring program at primary schools in the province of Mpumalanga, South Africa to support and improve job satisfaction among beginner teachers entering the profession. This study follows a quantitative approach, consisting of a Likert-scale questionnaire. The sample of the study was a number of 550 teachers (principals, deputy principals, heads of department, teachers and student teachers) from different races and cultures from 50 randomly selected state and private primary schools in Mpumalanga. After comparing the literature with the respondents' data, the researchers found that the development and implementation of a mentoring program in the province of Mpumalanga would positively impacts beginner teachers' job satisfaction, thus indicating a definite need for such a mentoring program.

The article studies the irretrievable human losses of Kuibyshev (now Samara) region in local conflicts of the second half of the twentieth century. Using interdisciplinary research methods, the author conducted a socio-demographic analysis of the “Book of Memory of Samara region residents who perished in local military conflicts”, which revealed the following characteristics of an international soldier: age, place of birth, cause of death, service life, education, profession, military rank, type of service, awards, and hobbies. The study is an attempt to understand the losses of military personnel suffered by the region during the “cold war” and to create a collective portrait of an internationalist warrior.

Almost seven decades after the Supreme Court’s 1954 Brown v Board of Education decision, African American/Black men are still vastly underrepresented in the K-12 public education profession. In this qualitative, phenomenological research study, a small sample of Black men educators who chose to enter and remain in the profession, shared their lived experiences. Three research questions informed this study: (1) What are African American/Black men’s perceptions of their representation in the K-12 public education profession? (2) What are African American/Black men’s perceptions regarding their entrance and retention in the K-12 public education profession? and (3)What are African American/Black men’s perceptions regarding the responsibilities African American men have to and within the K-12 public education profession? Findings show that while Black men are still underrepresented in K-12 public education, they have been resilient in remaining in the field and defining their roles, commitments, and responsibilities despite feelings of isolation, tokenism, and stereotypes.

The first five years of an educator's career are the most important time in determining if they will stay in the education profession. With the stress of starting a new career, novice teachers are often asked to do the most work. To help them navigate through the first few years of teaching and to increase retention, Missouri has adopted a mentoring policy. This narrative study describes mentee and mentor perception of the mentoring program and how they feel it affects their professional and personal lives. This study opens the doors to show what mentees and mentors feel is beneficial about the mentoring program and what is needed to make it better.

Statement of the problem. To solve the challenges of parent-child relationships among adolescents prone to vagrancy and their parents, it is necessary to know what ideas adolescents have about their parents. We believe that if we take into account the features of existing ideas about parents among adolescents prone to vagrancy, we can introduce changes into these structures. By correcting negative ideas about parents while working with the underaged, it is possible to harmonize child-parent relationships and thereby reduce the possibility of repeating deviant behavior. The purpose of the article is to describe features of the ideas about parents among adolescents prone to vagrancy. The research methodology consists of the analysis and generalization of works of foreign and Russian researchers related to the study of ideas about parents and vagrancy as a social process closely related to the situation in a family. Research methods. Twenty teenagers who are getting treatment in a residential facility for minors (Krasnoyarsk) were involved in the study of the ideas about parents of adolescents prone to vagrancy. The sample includes: 10 adolescents who are not prone to vagrancy and 10 adolescents with a medium intensity of a vagrancy syndrome. The following tests were used as diagnostic tools: “Scale of Leaving and Vagrancy” (I.V. Makarov), “Adolescents about Their Parents” (ADOR) by I. Schaefer (modified by Z. Mateychik and P. Rzhichan), “Parent-Child Relationships” (S.V. Lippo, S.T. Posokhov). To describe personality characteristics of parents, we used the test “Five Statements” which is based on the test “Twenty Statements” by M. Kuhn, T. McPartland. To summarize and analyze empiric materials, mathematical methods of statistical data processing were used: descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney test. Research results. The authors assumed and empirically proved that the ideas about parents among adolescents prone to vagrancy differ from the ideas about parents among adolescents who are not prone to vagrancy. The research gives an opportunity to identify significant criteria in the ideas about a father among adolescents prone to vagrancy (hostility, directivity, proximity factor, demographic and socio-psychological characteristics: age, education, profession, hobby, bad habits, as well as frequency and satisfaction with relationships with a father, emotional coloring of these relationships) and the ideas about a mother (hostility, autonomy, inconsistency, criticism factor, demographic and socio-psychological characteristics: age, education, profession, hobby, bad habits, as well as frequency and satisfaction with relationships with a mother, emotional coloring of these relationships). Conclusions. The results of the research allow identifying features of the ideas about parents among adolescents prone to vagrancy which are of practical interest for intervention with adolescents prone to vagrancy and have disturbed child-parent relationships, as part of the system of social services and psychological assistance.
