The production of catfish in aquaculture is still limited by the low supply of good quality seeds. One solution that can be done to overcome this problem is by the application of biofloc technology with microalgae addition. This study aims to evaluate the performance of digestive system, growth and robustness of the African catfish larvae maintained with biofloc technology and the addition of Chlorella sp. This research applied a completely randomized experimental design consisted of three treatments and triplicates, i.e larvae maintained with regular water exchange as the control (K), larvae maintained biofloc system (BF) and larvae reared with biofloc treatment and Chlorella sp. addition (BFC) with a rearing period of 15 days. Length growth, specific growth rate, condition factor, the activity of protease, amylase and lipase were not significantly different between treatments (P>0.05). The villi length in fish maintained in BF treatmen (136μm), was higher than those of BFC (121μm) and K treatments (105μm). The particle size of floc in BF and BFC were 0.44±0.025 and BFC 0.79±0.048 mm, respectively. The survival of catfish larvae in the BFC treatment was (51 ± 0,32)b, which was significantly higher (P<0.05) than those of K (45±0.52)a and BF (45±0.15)a. The results of stress test using 15 g L-1 water salinity demonstrated that the fish maintained in BFC has a higher survival (63%) than those of BF (47%) and K (43%). Overall results of the present study showed that the addition of Chlorella sp. could improve the growth performance and robustness of African catfish larvae against salinity stress.

The histometry, organosomatic parameters and growth performance of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus fed with commercial probiotics, Lactobacillus pentosus supplemented diet was assessed in the present study. Six experimental diets were formulated, at different inclusion levels of Lactobacillus pentosus of 0, 102,104, 106, 108and 1010 cfu in T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6 respectively. C. gariepinus were stocked into concrete tanks of 1.93 m by 1.93 m by 1.09 m. Each experimental diet was fed to three replicate groups of fish for 42 days. At the end of the feeding, histometrical parameters like mucosal fold length, mucosal fold breadth, mucosal fold area improved with increasing supplementation levels of L. pentosus. There was also significantly better P > 0.05 organosomatic parameters in all treatments with increasing level of supplementation. The best growth performance in term of specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) was observed in Treatment 3 as 10.49±0.23 and 1.56±0.22 respectively. The enhanced growth performance and histometry in fish fed diets with L. pentosus supplementation resulted in the best biological performance in African catfish at 1.0 g per 100 g of feed representing 104 cfu supplementation level. Therefore the present study shows that L. pentosus can be recommended as an important probiotic in aquaculture.

In the present study, a possible nature immunostimulant and growth promoter—humic substances (HS) originating from Siberian leonardite mineraloid—were tested on juvenile Clarias gariepinus performance. Feed additive was applied onto commercial pelleted feed at four HS levels—0, 1, 3, and 6% w/w (HS0, HS1, HS3, HS6, respectively). Diets were tested in five repetitions (in total, n = 1800 individuals, mean body weight 28.1 ± 6.2 g) for 56 days. Growth and production parameters, fish condition and somatic indices, and overall mortality were evaluated after 14, 28, 42, and 56 days of exposure. Whereas, plasma samples were collected only after 0, 28, and 56 days, when fish health status was assessed with biochemical parameters (total proteins, TP; alanine aminotransferase, ALT; aspartate aminotransferase, AST; lactate dehydrogenase, LDH; cholesterol, CHOL; triglycerides, TAG) and fish antioxidant status with glutathione (reduced glutathione, GSH; oxidized glutathione, GSSG; glutathione ratio GSH/GSSG). Although a significantly positive effect of HS feed additive on growth performance was not found in the present study, moderately positive effects were found regarding biochemical parameters (ALT, AST, LDH, CHOL, and TAG) and antioxidants (GSH/GSSG ratio) that were improved especially in the HS3 group.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the supplementation of turmeric in the diet on antioxidant status and growth performance of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) in zero water exchange condition. This study used a completely randomized design with 4 treatments and 4 replications. Each treatment consisted of feed supplementation turmeric at dosage of 0; 2.5; 5 or 7.5 g kg-1 diet. One hundred catfish juvenile (5.95±0.05 g) were stocked in intermediate bulk container (IBC) tank (1×1×1 m3) and rearing in zero water exchange condition for 60 days. Catfish were fed at satiation twice a day, in the morning and evening. The results showed that an increase in antioxidant content in catfish fed with the addition of turmeric, which simultaneously also reduced the percentage of liver damage. The parameters of liver damage can be seen from several parameters i.e. pale liver, droplet fat and fat content in the addition of turmeric treatment is lower than without the addition of turmeric. However, catfish fed with the addition of turmeric did not show significant results in terms of growth performances.
