English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is an approach in which the content and the learningactivities applied according to the needs of the English learners. This experimental study involved 26students from the fifth semester of Indonesian Language Education Department at University of PGRISemarang. The data were collected using five different instruments; observation, field notes, interviews, documentation, and performance tests. The data were analyzed using t-test formula and compared to t-table. The results of this study indicate that there is significant value between the pre-test and post-test results. The result of the calculation of t-test is 9.97. Because the t-table is 2.04, it can be concluded that the t-test> ttable. The data shows that the result of the t-test is higher than t-table, it means that the accepted hypothesis is a positive hypothesis which says that "Hi: There is a significant improvement of speaking competence in the case of performing the idea of the elements of the story in the folklores after being taught using Communicative Purpose Based Approach.”

The primary purpose of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of two pre- task activities of reading: pre- taught vocabulary and brainstorming in EFL learners’ reading comprehending.  To this end, three intact classes in a private English Institute in Tehran, were selected from a population of 60 English learners.  Based on their scores on Oxford Placement Test (OPT), the students were randomly assigned into two experimental groups and one control group and a pre-test was run at the beginning of the course. At outset of the course a pre- test was run among three groups.  The researcher instructed the experimental groups in 16 weeks, one session a week and lasting 40 minutes in each session. The first experimental group benefited from pre- taught vocabulary, while the second experimental group benefited from brainstorming as a pre- task and the third group did not receive any pre- task activities in the reading class. At the end of the course, a post- test with the same items of the pre- test was run to determine the improvement of EFL intermediate students’ reading comprehension changes and an attitude questionnaire was planned to determine the learners’ attitudes toward the pre- task activities.    The results of paired sample t- test indicated that the use of pre- taught vocabulary and also brainstorming enhanced the scores of  the first experimental and second experimental groups’  post- tests ; moreover, ANOVA results revealed a significant increase in reading comprehension scores  of the first and the second  experimental groups’ post- tests compared to the control group’ post-test scores.  The results of attitude questionnaire demonstrated the pupils’ positive attitudes toward the use of pre- task activities.

Every single day, we use spoken and written words to communicate thoughts, ideas and emotions. Sometimes, we are successful in communication, and sometimes we are not quite successful. We can say what we mean by use of good vocabulary knowledge. Facing with a written text, a good vocabulary is a very important tool. By having a good knowledge of vocabulary, you will be able to choose the best appropriate word. The purpose of the present study was set out to investigate the effects of vocabulary awareness on depth of vocabulary knowledge. In order to measure the effects of vocabulary awareness instruction on students’ depth of vocabulary knowledge, a Word Associates Test (WAT) was administered to both groups in pretest and post test. After comparing the mean scores of pre test and post test results, it was revealed that vocabulary awareness instruction group outperformed the control group in reading comprehension performance, but not in depth of vocabulary knowledge, so vocabulary awareness instruction does not influence participants’ depth of vocabulary knowledge.

This research was designed to find out the effects of vocabulary analogy to reading comprehension of seventh grade students of State Junior High School 9, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Specifically it sought to answer the following questions: 1) How is the effects in reading comprehension of the students taught with  Vocabulary  Analogy  or  without  vocabulary  analogy?  2)  Is  there  a significant difference in the reading comprehension between the control and experimental groups based on the pre-test and post-test results? A test was conducted for control and experimental groups before and after the treatment process. T-test was computed to reveal whether there was a significant  difference in  the pre-test  and post-test results of the control and experimental groups. Findings of the research were: 1) The use of vocabulary analogy improved students’ reading comprehension 2) The computed T value based from the results of pre-test in the control and experimental groups is 0.130,  lower  than  T  tabular  value  of  1.996.  This  result  accepts  the  null hypothesis that there is no significant difference in the results of pre-test of control and experimental groups. Moreover, treatments were given to control and experimental groups after the pre-test, control group was taught without vocabulary analogy and experimental group was taught with vocabulary analogy before the post-test for each group. The computed T value in the post-test of the control and experimental groups is 11.15, higher than T tabular value of 1.996 at5% level significance. This result rejects the null hypothesis that there is no significant difference in the results of pre-test and post-test of control and experimental groups. Based on findings, the following conclusions were drawn: 1) The use of vocabulary  analogy  had  significantly  influenced  students’  reading comprehension particularly of the experimental group 2) There is significant difference in the post-test results of the control and experimental groups. Null hypothesis was rejected since the computed T value was higher than the T tabular value.

The present study investigated the effects of Reciprocal Teaching of Reading (RTR) and Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) on the reading comprehension of Iranian EFL intermediate students. After administering the Preliminary English Test (PET) to a total population of 53, this researcher selected an almost homogeneous group of 42 Iranian intermediate students and randomly assigned them to two groups of CIRC and RTR techniques – 21 students per group. Based on their scores, both classes were divided into 7 almost heterogeneous teams - three members each. Both groups received the same instruction for five weeks and the course lasted for 15 sessions of 90 minutes. Whereas the RTR group experienced their reading course via RTR, which emphasizes explicit teaching of reading strategies, the other group experienced their reading course through CIRC. Upon the end of the treatment, a PET was administered to both groups as post-test. The scores of the post-test were compared with those of the on pre-test. Results showed that RTR had a more significant effect on the improvement of reading comprehension of the participants. The factors that led to the results of the study and the pedagogical implications for EFL teachers, syllabus designers and materials developers are discussed. In addition, she suggests recommendations for further research.
