There are those who react to it as usual, butsome also assume based on political, religious, social and ideological perspectives. As astrategic information tool, mass media is very likely to construct reality on the ground intoa news product that not only has business value, but is also loaded with the interests of themedia ideology itself. For the Past Five Decades, media texts, broadcast over television air waves, have created a shared identity among viewing audiences. John B. Thompson notes that if culture is understood as “the ways in which meaningful expressions of various kinds are produced, constructed and received by individuals”, then mass media can be understood as central to the creation and maintenance of culture (pp. 122-23). The words and images that construct a media culture are the very building blocks of collective identity. As Michael Schudson observes, “news is part of the background through which and with which people think” (p. 16).

The rapid spread of technologies involving the application of “Genetic Modification (GM)” raised the need for science communication on this new technology in society. To consider the communication on GM in the society, an understanding of the current mass media is required. This paper shows the whole picture of newspaper discourses on GM in Japan. For the Japanese public, newspapers represent one of the major sources of information on GM. We subjected the two Japanese newspapers with the largest circulation, the Asahi Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun, to an analysis of the full text of approximately 4000 articles on GM published over the past to perform an assessment of the change of reportage on GM. As for the most important results, our analysis shows that there are two significant shifts with respect to the major topics addressed in articles on GM by Japanese newspapers.

Private Ken Lukowiak was a member of the Second Battalion Parachute Regiment (2 PARA) of the British Army deployed to the Falkland Islands for the 1982 British-Argentine conflict. The veteran’s creative drive motivated him into writing down his memories, and writing helped him overcome his war traumas. This paper seeks to explore Lukowiak’s memoir as a work offering an alternative retelling of the Falklands War, based on a deep emotional framework, in contrast to the narrative of heroism favoured by mass media. His personal account emphasizes the psychological distress and detachment of a soldier in opposition to the supposedly exemplary and outstanding behaviour of troops as often portrayed in mainstream journalism during and after the armed conflict.

Tourism is one of the sectors of the economy that is most dependent on climate, creating multiple vulnerabilities and new opportunities arising with changing climate. Even though the links between tourism and climate have been well researched, this scientific knowledge has not percolated into policies and the ability to act. This disconnect between scientific knowledge and practices is frequently blamed on inadequate climate change communication to the public in mass media. We studied the mass media framing of climate change and tourism by analyzing English newspaper publications worldwide over the past 30 years. The paper presents a Big Data analysis of the content, geographical patterns, and temporal changes in newspapers’ publications on climate change and tourism.

AbstractMany painful ideological problems existing in contemporary Russia are determined by the inadequacy of perception of the country's revolutionary past. This misperception stems from both the consequences of the decades-long mythologization of the October Revolution and its leaders and from the more recent attempts to get rid of the dependence on Bolshevik propaganda. Contemporary historic memory in Russia is beset with one major contradiction: the desire to part with the myth, and the inability to do so. Although, traditionally, images of the past are usually adapted in order to suit the needs of modernity, this task has become much easier in contemporary society with its powerful mass media fitted with visual networks. Historic memory, previously shaped by legends, folklore, rites and rituals, now comes under relentless fire from the dilettantes pretending to have discovered some "true" vision of the past, and illustrating this vision by incongruous video footage. As a result, images of the past inevitably lose their former edifying role and become a means of inculcation by propagating political and moral stereotypes advantageous to the authorities. The wave of discussions on the Russian Revolution, which rose in connection with its current anniversary, was yet another indication that today's ideologists, with their inept denunciations, are only aggravating the trauma inflicted on social conscience.

This article explores the ways in which Silvio Berlusconi might figure in collective memory. It approaches this from a number of angles. First, consideration is given to the way political figures of the past have resonated culturally and the role of institutions including the mass media in this. Second, Berlusconi's own efforts to situate himself in relation to a shared past are explored, with reference to the place of three nostalgic appeals that figured with varying intensity at different points in his career. Third, Berlusconian aesthetics are investigated to explore the relative roles of kitsch and glamour. It is shown that kitsch gained the upper hand and that this also manifested itself in the monarchical aspects that his personality cult took on. Finally, Berlusconi is considered as a possible subject for a biopic and a discussion is offered of the way his life and career might be presented in different variants of this genre. Overall, it is suggested that expectations that he will be damned by history fail to take account both of the way he imposed himself on the collective consciousness and of the generic requirements of the mass media.

<p>This article focuses on "Golden Microphone Award" song contest which has been organized under the sponsorship of Hürriyet Daily News between the years of 1965-68. Between the different forms of popular culture/music and mass media, there is a characteristically symbiotic relationship in which one almost can not survive in the absence of the other. Golden Microphone song contest, organized under the sponsorship of the mass media institution, Hürriyet Daily News, requires an evaluation in a scope that exceeds this symbiotic relationship. Because the role that Hürriyet plays in the circulation and the support of the dominant ideological definitions and representations is more important here. If we consider Golden Microphone contest as a moment,we can say that: there is a dynamic arena for the media, official ideology, musicians and audience in which both the elements of resistance and consent, the issues of the past and the future; hence overlapping and conflicting elements are available. In this framework, this research tries to analyse the dynamics of this specific moment of Turkish popular music history by using the theoretical status of media, sponsorship, ideology and hegemony concepts.  </p><p> </p><p><strong>Özet</strong></p><p>Bu makale, Hürriyet Gazetesi’nin sponsorluğunda 1965-68 yılları arasında düzenlenen “Altın Mikrofon Armağanı” adlı şarkı yarışması üzerine odaklanır. Popüler kültürün/müziğin farklı formları ile kitle iletişim araçları arasında, diğeri olmadan birisinin hayatını neredeyse sürdüremez olduğu karakteristik bir simbiyotik ilişki vardır. Bir kitle medyası olarak Hürriyet Gazetesinin sponsorluğunda düzenlenen “Altın Mikrofon” şarkı yarışması, bu simbiyotik ilişkiyi aşan bir çerçeve içinde değerlendirmeyi de gerektirmektedir. Çünkü Hürriyet’in egemen ideolojik tanımlar ve temsillerin dolaşımı ve pekiştirilmesinde oynadığı rol, burada çok daha önemlidir. Altın Mikrofon yarışmasını bir uğrak (moment) olarak ele alırsak şunu söyleyebiliriz: bu uğrakta gerek medya, gerek resmi ideoloji, gerekse müzisyenler ve izlerkitle için; hem direniş hem kabullenme ögeleri, hem geçmişin ve geleceğin unsurları, dolayısıyla hem birbiriyle örtüşen hem de çatışan ögelerin olduğu dinamik bir mücadele alanı bulunmaktadır. Bu çerçevede çalışma; medya, sponsorluk, ideoloji ve hegemonya kavramlarının teorik statüsünden yararlanarak, Türk popüler müzik tarihinin bu özgül uğrağını biçimlendiren dinamikleri analiz etme girişimidir.</p>

The aim of the article is to study the metaphorization peculiarities of the concept FAMILY in the British publicistic discourse of the XVIII – XXI centuries. The question of a language segmenting, categorizing the surrounding reality and the experience of its speakers, which has always been in the center of attention of scholars is raised. The importance of lexical nomination as a means of fixing the changes that occur continuously and are understood by humans in their social practice is highlighted. The focus of the study is to trace the process of forming an image of ​​the world of English speakers using publicistic material in diachrony over the past four centuries and to identify the specifics of conceptualization and categorization of this segment of reality. The modifications of the imaginative-evaluative constituent, the loss of the existing and the acquirement of new meanings and their shades are bound with both the language development and with the extralinguistic factors such as the development of the community, social, political and historical events. Printed mass media have always been an important and influential part of social life. They take part in the creation and exchange of ideas and opinions as people receive knowledge about the world indirectly through mass media. These facts contribute to the analysis of a lingvocultural element of words both synchronically and diachronically. Comparing newspapers texts it becomes possible to highlight similarities and differences in the interpretation of the notion expressed by some lexeme. Moreover, the analysis of articles indicates social understanding of the notion. Since newspapers are affordable and available for all members of the society, they are the representatives of live language which unites knowledge and experience.

<p>The purpose of the study is to know and depict the revitalization and socialization of Daeng dance in purbalingga, Indonesia. This study used a qualitative method. The relevant techniques of data collection to the method are observation, interview, and documentation. The data obtained are analyzedusing three ways; they are data reduction, data display, conclusion and verification. The results showed that revitalizing Daeng dance occurred in its earliest performances, by means of innovating the foregoing Daeng dance without leaving its characteristics. The revitalization was done toward the dance’s motion, accompaniment, makeup, wardrobe, stage, sounds, lighting, and floor patterns, as well as there is a change in its function; as the media of spreading Islam in the past to nowadays just being an entertainment. After the process of revitalization, Daeng dance is then socialized through two ways of deployment; they are formal and informal processes. This dance’s socialization in this study occurs through direct performance and mass media. </p>
