Introduction: Clinical education is an ever-lasting requirement in educational settings for students and faculty. However, it is associated with numerous challenges that can have an impact on the efficacy of both the students and the teachers. The challenge can be more prominent in specialized environments such as the operating room. In this qualitative study, we have tried to identify these challenges and provide solutions to them. Methods: This is a qualitative content analysis study was performed with the incorporation of seven operating room and anesthesiology instructors of Bushehr University of Medical Sciences. The required questions were first collected and subsequently posed as interviews in the operating room setting. Data were collected through the recording of semi-structured interviews and until the data saturation. Results: Research findings are reported in three themes and nine categories. The main themes were organizational structure, planning, and human resources, each of which with specific categories and/or subcategories as per the subject matter. In terms of organizational structure, the most serious challenges comprised a lack of welfare facilities and problems in the field of education, such as non-specialization of operating rooms and limited physical space. The challenges related to planning comprised of a lack of student self-evaluation, delay in surgery initiation, and a large number of students in various fields. As for the human resource challenges, the most apparent problems were insufficient education delivered to students before their entrance to the operating room and the lack of familiarity of officials with the operating room environment. Conclusions: Given the questions posed to and the answers received from the instructors, most of the problems in the operating rooms in terms of education are related to the infrastructure-associated problems in the operating room and the studentschr('39') approach to the operating room. Despite the enormous efforts of the instructors in education, as they were respondents in the study, it could not be clarified how the problems in human resource and teacher dimensions could help solve the overall problems, suggesting that further research is required with the help of students and other groups involved in education in the operating room.

Aim: The most important mission of Healthcare systems is to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. Manpower is the key pillar in achieving this goal. Studies show that newly graduated nurses do not have sufficient clinical competence to care for patients. This study aimed to explore the reasons for inadequate competence of newly graduated nurses. Method: The present study is a qualitative study. Participants in this study were 30 individuals, including nursing students, newly graduates nurses, nursing faculties, clinical nurses, nursing managers and deputies for the education of nursing schools who were selected by purposeful sampling method. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The data collection continued to data saturation. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis in MAXQDA 10 software. Results: Three main categories emerged as reasons for the inadequate clinical competency in the newly graduated nurses i.e. inefficient mechanism of student recruitment, ineffective education, and gloomy outlook for the nursing profession. Conclusion: Training qualified clinical nurses is a dynamic process that requires enrolling the appropriate individuals, preparing a suitable infrastructure to train, training them effectively, providing in-service training, and providing the necessary motivation for professional development in the health care settings.

Abstract Background : Pregnant women’s participation in safe delivery is associated with safety assurance and improvement. Safety and care quality improvement in developed countries has so far been based on research and clinical evidence. Nonetheless, stakeholders’ preferences and expectations were not much taken into account. This study aimed to explore midwives’ expectations from pregnant women regarding their participation in safe delivery. Methods : This qualitative study was conducted in 2019 in three public hospitals in Urmia, Iran. Data were collected through 24 in-depth semi-structured interviews with 24 midwives. Sampling was done purposively and continued up to data saturation. Data were analyzed through Graneheim and Lundman’s qualitative content analysis. Results: Midwives’ expectations from pregnant women regarding their participation in safe delivery were grouped into the two main themes of effective communication (with two main categories) and empowerment of pregnant women (with three categories). The five main categories of these two themes were client’s interaction with midwife, confidence in midwife, readiness for delivery, health literacy improvement, and participation in safe behaviors, respectively. Conclusions : Understanding midwives’ expectations regarding pregnant women participation in safe delivery is important to the development of policies for care quality and safety improvement in perinatal care. Pharmacists and pharmaceutical technicians play an important role in counselling customers regarding sunscreen use and sun protection measures. A potentially helpful tool that can be used during counselling is the ultraviolet index (UVI), which informs individuals when and what sun protection measures are needed at a specific place and time. Our aim in this qualitative study was to explore awareness, knowledge, and use of the UVI during counselling in pharmacies. We used semi-structured interviews with pharmacists and pharmaceutical technicians (n = 20) to answer our research questions. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. During the interviews pharmacists and pharmaceutical technicians revealed a lot of uncertainty and lack of knowledge regarding the UVI. Eight professionals were able to give a correct definition of UVI. Amongst others, the UVI was confused with sun protection factor. Overall, the UVI was hardly used during the counselling of customers. The UVI was developed to provide guidance when which type of sun protection is required to avoid detrimental effects of ultraviolet radiation. For effective implementation, both the general population and health professionals (e.g., pharmacists) have to increase their knowledge about the UVI. This would strengthen its use during professional counselling in pharmacies and may help to reduce the incidence of skin cancer over the long term.

Abstract Background: Keeping the patients well and fully informed about diagnosis, prognosis, and treatments is one of the patient’s rights in any healthcare system. Although all healthcare providers have the same viewpoint about rendering the truth in treatment process, sometimes the truth is not told to the patients; that is why the healthcare staff tell “white lie” instead. This study aimed to explore the nurses’ experience of white lies during patient care. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted from June to December 2018. Eighteen hospital nurses were recruited with maximum variation from ten state-run educational hospitals affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Purposeful sampling was used and data were collected by semi-structured interviews that were continued until data saturation. Data were classified and analyzed by content analysis approach. Results: The data analysis in this study resulted in four main categories and eleven subcategories. The main categories included hope crisis, bad news, cultural diversity, and nurses’ limited professional competences. Conclusion: Results of the present study showed that, white lie told by nurses during patient care may be due to a wide range of patient, nurse and/or organizational related factors. Communication was the main factor that influenced information rendering. Nurses’ communication with patients should be based on mutual respect, trust and adequate cultural knowledge, and also nurses should provide precise information to patients, so that they can make accurate decisions regarding their health care.

Abstract Background: Military personnel are likely to encounter mental health problems due to High-risk occupations associated with significant levels of psychological distress. The aim of the present study was to explore psychological distress experienced by Iranian military personnel. Methods: The present qualitative study was conducted on 15 Iranian military personnel. Purposeful sampling was used to select the participants and continued until data saturation was reached. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and then the qualitative data were analyzed through direct content analysis. Results: By analyzing show 395 primary codes, 2 main categories, including demands and resources were extracted from the experiences of military members. The categories included several sub-categories, which were classified according to their significant characteristics. Findings of this study ascertain that different factors affect the military member’s psychological distress.Conclusions: Military organization and leaders should consider the factors of psychological distress that raised by specialists, and assign policies to improve their mental health. According to the present results, it is recommended that the process of psychological distress in military members be investigated further.

Objective: Nurses’ organizational commitment is one of the most important factors that facilitates their professional evolution and influences the method of care provision, quality of care, and patients’ satisfaction. The aim of this study was identified the factors that affect nurses’ perceived organizational commitment. Material and Methods: This qualitative study, conducted on 16 clinical nurses employed in Social Security Hospital of Khorramabad, Iran, during five months from May to September 2015, used deep semi-structured interviews. Purposive sampling method was used for the selection of nurses and the data were analyzed using conventional qualitative content analysis. Lincoln & Guba’s criteria were used to secure data accuracy and stability. Results: Sixteen subcategories, five categories, and three themes were distilled during content analysis process. The abstracted themes included “organizational factors”, “occupational challenges”, and “contributory management”. Conclusion: Our findings showed that numerous factors present in nurses’ profession and work environment may influence the rate of nurses’ interest and commitment in the hospital and the related organization. Hence, nurse managers can foster the promotion of nurses’ organizational commitment through creating the required suitable conditions. Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.18(2) 2019 p.303-311

Abstract Aim: The aim of this study was to identify factors that promote and impede other-sex (OS) friendships in adolescent girls. Methods: A qualitative study conducted with 20 adolescent girls recruited in public places in Tehran, Iran. Information was collected through semi-structured interviews and coded via the conventional qualitative content analysis approach. Results: Four factors were identified that appeared to promote entry into OS friendships. These factors include (a) a poor understanding of perceived risks, (b) weak religious beliefs, (c) processes of identity formation, and (d) low self-esteem. In addition, six factors appeared to impede entry into these friendships: (a) self-confidence, (b) prioritizing education, (c) maintaining particular entertainment preferences, (d) awareness of prior unpleasant experiences with boys, (e) having strong religious convictions, and (f) shaming from significant others. Conclusion: These findings provide unique insights into the factors that stem from different levels of social complexity, which affect participation in a fundamental form of human experience.

Abstract Objectives To explore the causes of medical errors (ME) and under-reporting amongst pediatric nurses at an Iranian teaching hospital. Design A qualitative study, based on individual, in-depth, semi-structured interviews and content analysis approach. Settings The study was conducted at the Pediatric Department of the largest tertiary general and teaching hospital in Shiraz, southern Iran. Participants The study population was all pediatrics nurses who work at Pediatric Department and they had been trained on ME, as well as methods to report them through the hospital’s ME reporting system. Purposive sampling was used by selecting key informants until data saturation was achieved and no more new information was obtained. Finally, 18 pediatric nurses were interviewed. Main outcome measure(s) Pediatrics nurses’ views on the causes of ME and under-reporting. Results We found five main factors causing ME and under-reporting: personal factors, workplace factors, managerial factors, work culture and error reporting system. These factors were further classified into proximal and distal factors. Proximal factors had direct relationship with ME and distal factors were contextual factors. Conclusion Causes of ME and under-reporting amongst pediatric nurses are complex and intertwined. Both proximal and distal factors need to be simultaneously addressed using context-specific approaches. Further research on other groups of healthcare workers and using a quantitative approach will be beneficial to elucidate the most appropriate interventions.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Lung cancer is the commonest malignant tumor and is increasing in incidence by 2% a year. In 90% of diagnosed cases, it is associated with tobacco product consumption. It is the greatest cause of mortality among cancer types in Brazil. Knowledge of patients’ psychological representations is needed for evaluating treatments and educating patients. The aim here was to interpret how smokers with lung cancer interpret the possible causes of their illness and to understand their perceptions regarding cigarette use. DESIGN AND SETTING: Clinical-qualitative study (exploratory, non-experimental) at the Pulmonary Disease Service, General Hospital, Universidade Estadual de Campinas. METHODS: An intentional small sample of cancer inpatients was recruited. The group was closed with 11 subjects, following attainment of data saturation from interviews. These interviews were semi-directed, with in-depth open-ended questions on interviewees’ observations, applied in a confidential setting using a tape recorder. Interviewees’ responses were categorized using qualitative content analysis and the results were assessed using interdisciplinary theoretical concepts, particularly from medical psychology. RESULTS: Six males and five females aged between 46 and 68 years who presented diverse clinical conditions were interviewed. CONCLUSIONS: A broader approach towards the psychological comprehension of such patients is needed, considering that cigarette consumption involves conscious and unconscious motivations, sociocultural and educational factors, the glamour of tobacco advertising, and problems with psychophysical dependence. Such an approach would avoid the perception among patients that the healthcare team are "inquisitors". This would lead to better adherence to treatment and better quality of life.

Psychological Momentum (PM) is commonly referred to in competitive sports, but still has to be considered elusive from a scientific perspective. This study explores coaches’ perception of triggers, strategies and characteristics of PM in female elite handball teams. Semi-structured interviews with nine coaches were evaluated using a qualitative content analysis. The results revealed that positive and negative PM were characterized by factors regarding behavior, cognition, confidence, emotions, and the team. Triggers for positive PM were categorized into confidence, players’ individual factors, team factors, and team-opponent-factors, whereas triggers for negative PM related to coach factors, confidence, external factors, players’ individual factors, and team factors. Moreover, strategies emerged that are considered beneficial for controlling PM. The results are discussed with emphasis on behavioral aspects, confidence, emotions, team factors, and application. Foundations based on this study and recent research lead to the assumption that PM is probably best portrayed in a circular approach.
