Water and poverty are indistinguishably related. Absence of clean water and poverty are equally worth to research into; access to reliable sources of clean water is vital in decreasing poverty. Water is an essential commodity in human and aquatic life and plays a crucial role in the development of every country. Water is used for several activities such as irrigation in agricultural, energy generation, domestic use, industry and many more. This study investigates the state of access to water resources in sub-Sahara Africa, discussing the available potentials and addressing the various barriers preventing its development as well as policies for proper water management. The study surveys the socio-economic drivers of poverty and environmental factors. The conclusion of this study can be used to inform policymakers, governments, international organizations and other stakeholders to support in preparing for suitable policies for providing quality and better service in water supply and maintainable water management for countries at a giving time to avoid water poverty.

The purpose of this study is to reveal and analyze the management of natural resources based on local wisdom on the welfare of the community in Nagari Sungai Antuan, Lima Puluh Kota District. This research uses qualitative methods. Primary data were obtained from interviews with informants (community) and key informants (Wali Nagari, Niniak Mamak and Clean Water Management). The location of the research is in Nagari Sungai Antuan, Lima Puluh Kota district. The results of the study: forest management system or ulayat land is principled ganggam bauntuak based on kinship system, although the ownership of forest or ulayat land based on tribe. In case of a dispute between the tribe then settled by Niniak Mamak among the disputing tribes. The value of custom which feels thick here like gotong royong and often held musyawarah. Some local wisdom of society in Nagari Sungai Antuan are: 1) Manage gambier, 2) Manage mixed garden, 3) Manage paddy field and 4) Manage water resources.

The level of the water management complex development affects the state of the resource potential of the region and its structural and sectoral features. The purpose of this article is to reveal the relations and interdependence of the processes of strategic development of the water management complex and regional economy; to form recommendations that contribute to the development of these relations. The problem of forming a strategy for the water management complex development is considered within the framework of the sustainable development concept, which takes socio-economic and environmental aspects into account. As a result of the study the influence of the water management complex on the socio-economic potential of the southern Russian regions was analyzed. Scenario variants of the water management complex development in the regions are identified, their typology is carried out. The necessity of forming a mechanism of interdepartmental coordination to improve the efficiency of the management system for the strategic development of the water management complex is justified. Conclusions are drawn about the need to supplement the basin approach to water resources management with a regional-sectoral approach. This will make it possible to link the development strategy of the water management complex with the sectoral structural changes in the region. The results of the study can be used by regional authorities and water resources management to solve the problems of increasing the sustainability of water and regional ecosystems.

The water resources management affords many solutions to manage water more holistically and optimally. In essence, they are a call to stop fragmentary approaches to water management and high-handed development decisions made for the benefit of a single user group of action.The Integrated Water Basin Management and its components are used to find a suitable flood mititgation measure. The study area is Orathur of Kancheepuram district. The data that are used in this work is been taken for the consecutive 20 years and it has been analysed. With the overall data the GIS mapping is done using ArcGIS software to locate the area precisely. Its tributaries and origin from Manimangalam tributary is located clearly to estimate the inflow and outflow of the water and the demand for water at the particular region is found and then analysed for the planning of water management and flood control..

This chapter explores grassroots interventions by forging partnerships with stakeholders in improving the management of water resources at the community level. In order to gain insight into the nuances of managing water resources in partnership, a pilot study was instituted in the State of Rajasthan, India. The efficacy of the partnership approach in ensuring equitable water management is demonstrated. The analysis is supported by data collected through the administration of a questionnaire for five different stakeholders. The impact of the intervention reiterates the positive social, economic, and environmental outcomes in a more sustainable manner.

Key sources of uncertainty of importance for water resources management are (1) uncertainty in data; (2) uncertainty related to hydrological models (parameter values, model technique, model structure); and (3) uncertainty related to the context and the framing of the decision-making process. The European funded project ‘Harmonised techniques and representative river basin data for assessment and use of uncertainty information in integrated water management (HarmoniRiB)’ has resulted in a range of tools and methods to assess such uncertainties, focusing on items (1) and (2). The project also engaged in a number of discussions surrounding uncertainty and risk assessment in support of decision-making in water management. Based on the project's results and experiences, and on the subsequent discussions a number of conclusions can be drawn on the future needs for successful adoption of uncertainty analysis in decision support. These conclusions range from additional scientific research on specific uncertainties, dedicated guidelines for operational use to capacity building at all levels. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate on these conclusions and anchoring them in the broad objective of making uncertainty and risk assessment an essential and natural part in future decision-making processes.

Abstract Serious games provide a way for stakeholders to become engaged in and understand the issues and constraints on a real-world system. An application of a serious game is explored, as a way to improve engagement and learning of participants in a water management planning process. Bow River Sim is a single-player game that helps the user to understand the Water Resources Management Model (WRMM) and to visualize the implications and impacts around system interactions in the basin. The Bow River Sim simulates water management decision-making based on maximizing social, economic, and environmental benefits while managing limited water supply. The game incorporates the principles of ‘meaningful play’ and provides a user-friendly interface, a fun game, and visual elements. The paper aims to (a) provide an overview of Bow River Sim, (b) illustrate how innovations such as serious games enhance learning processes for the user, and (c) illustrate the application of Bow River Sim and key learnings.

AbstractSemi-arid regions are known for erratic precipitation patterns with significant effects on the hydrological cycle and water resources availability. High temporal and spatial variation in precipitation causes large variability in runoff over short durations. Due to low soil water storage capacity, base flow is often missing and rivers fall dry for long periods. Because of its climatic characteristics, the semi-arid north-eastern region of Brazil is prone to droughts. To counter these, reservoirs were built to ensure water supply during dry months. This paper describes problems and solutions when calibrating and validating the eco-hydrological model SWIM for semi-arid regions on the example of the Pajeú watershed in north-eastern Brazil. The model was calibrated to river discharge data before the year 1983, with no or little effects of water management, applying a simple and an enhanced approach. Uncertainties result mainly from the meteorological data and observed river discharges. After model calibration water management was included in the simulations. Observed and simulated reservoir volumes and river discharges are compared. The calibrated and validated models were used to simulate the impacts of climate change on hydrological processes and water resources management using data of two representative concentration pathways (RCP) and five earth system models (ESM). The differences in changes in natural and managed mean discharges are negligible (< 5%) under RCP8.5 but notable (> 5%) under RCP2.6 for the ESM ensemble mean. In semi-arid catchments, the enhanced approach should be preferred, because in addition to discharge, a second variable, here evapotranspiration, is considered for model validation.
